Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch-Book of the North Here, straight as a swan-flight along the ridge of the watershed, commanding the country for miles upon either side, still runs the ancient highway of Imperial Rome. From the golden milestone of Augustus in the Capitol, in a line scarce broken by the blue straits of the sea, ran hither the path of that ancient Power. Of old, along these far-stretching arteries came pulsing in tidal waves the iron blood of the stern heart beating far away in the south. From the wooded valleys below, the awed inhabitants doubtless long ago looked up and wondered, as the dark masses of the legions came rolling along these hills. Book A Somerset Sketch Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Somerset Sketch Book Classic Reprint written by H. Hay Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Somerset Sketch-Book ON the northern side of Mendip there is a narrow valley winding inland a long way, very little above sea-level; on the other side there is a wide plain, equally low, stretching to the sea, and in the middle of this the Mend Hills rise sheer up like a wall into the sky. 80 steep is their ascent that looking across the valley you are inclined to wonder how any wheeled thing ever gets up there, and indeed how the houses manage to cling to the sides without sliding down altogether. The fairy-tales of our youth used to tell of a hill of glass which had to be crossed by the bold adventurer; in winter the sides of Mendip are rather like that enchanted mountain. And when you do get to the top, past the house where the bladder-fern grows, the place looks as if, though not actually fairyland, it were very near the borders thereof. Mendip is a great tableland, bare and wide, a lonely, windy place of rolling fields and long walls of mortarless grey stone, and there is always a great deal more sky than anything else to be seen there, because until you get near the edge of the plateau you cannot see the country below at all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Sketchbook: Cats shows how it's done by showing museum-quality works, then coaching you to try the techniques with the help an expert's suggestions. Whether scribbling out a quick sketch with minimal detail, or making a finished portrait where every silky hair and polished whisker stands out, the best cat artists can capture the very essence of feline-ness. How do they do it? Firsthand observation of cats will tell you a lot about the way they sit, yawn, tweak their tails, and curl up to sleep, but it won't tell you how to get those things down on paper. Classic Sketchbook: Cats is the second in a series of instructional books that began with Classic Sketchbook: Botanicals. The series shows how to draw your subjects by looking at the details of museum-quality works, then coaching you through the techniques with the help an expert's suggestions. In this case the expert is Patricia Wynne, a noted illustrator with a specialty in animals. Wynne will guide you through fur, paws, and eyes, as well as cats sleeping, playing, or pouncing. Her unique instructions places a close-up of a drawing or painting by a noted artist like Gauguin, Chardin, Gwen John, and Theodore Steinlen on the left side of the page. And on the right side of the page Patricia Wynne coaches you with detailed, step-by-step drawings, that illuminate the process.

Download or read book The American Drawing Book Classic Reprint written by John Gadsby Champan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Drawing-Book From the delight, as well as profit, that awaits them, all may be safely invited and tempted to the study of Drawing. They may find difficulties; 'but they will find pleasures, also, of the richest kind. They will find flowers blooming along their way, and wonders Opening before them at every step: nature unfolding her ample volumes, and displaying combinations of beauty and delight, beyond the power of words to tell them of. It will be theirs, to record the ever changing pictures of earth and heaven; to give them body and form, in which others, lea favored than themselves, may participate through them: theirs, to preserve the image of some cherished object long after it has ceased, in its reality, to exist - or, perhaps, to call forth some priceless treasure from the world of poetry and thought. To those who have in view more than mere pleasure and amusement in the pursuit of the art of Drawing, may be fairly promised advantages that they will surely realize; and a portion of this work will be devoted especially to those who look to the application of the art to its most practical purposes. Most of the difficulties constantly felt by artificers in the execution of their handiwork, will be obviated, when the same hand that executes can design. Let our mechanics have their apprentices instructed in Drawing, and the effects will be soon evident in their work shops. They will no longer depend upon foreign inventions, that are, after all, little adapted to the wants, tastes, and habits of our people. Let these wants be supplied by articles, at once more useful and equally ornamental, of home production. Let them learn to use their own strength.
