Book Datt treya The Immortal Guru Yogin and Avat ra

Download or read book Datt treya The Immortal Guru Yogin and Avat ra written by Antonio Rigopoulos and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-04-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the multi-faceted Hindu deity Dattatreya from his Puranic emergence up to modern times. Dattatreya's Brahmanical portrayal, as well as his even more archaic characterization as a Tantric antinomian figure, combines both Vaisnava Saiva motifs. Over the course of time, Dattatreya has come to embody the roles of the immortal guru, yogin and avatara in a paradigmatic manner. From the sixteenth century Dattatreya's glorious characterization emerged as the incarnation of the trimurti of Brahma, Visnu, and Siva. Although Maharastra is the heartland of Dattatreya devotion, his presence is attested to throughout India and extends beyond the boundaries of Hinduism, being met with in Sufi circles and even in Buddhism and Jainism via Nathism. The scarce attention which most Western scholars of Indian religions have paid to this deity contrasts with its ubiquitousness and social permeability. Devotion to Dattatreya cuts through all social and religious strata of Indian society: among his adepts we find yogis, Brahmans, faqirs, Devi worshippers, untouchables, thieves, and prostitutes. This book explores all primary religious dimensions: myth, doctrine, ritual, philosophy, mysticism, and iconography. The comprehensive result offers a rich fresco of Hindu religion as well as an understanding of Marathi integrative spirituality: precisely this complexity of themes constitutes Dattatreya's uniqueness.

Book The Dhvany loka of nandavardhana with the Locana of Abhinavagupta

Download or read book The Dhvany loka of nandavardhana with the Locana of Abhinavagupta written by Ānandavardhana and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a thousand years the brilliant analysis of aesthetic experience set forth in the Locana of Abhinavagupta, India's founding literary critic, has dominated traditional Indian theory on poetics and aesthetics. The Locana, presented here in English translation for the first time, is a commentary on the ninth-century Dhvanyaloka of Anandavardhana, which is itself the pivotal work in the history of Indian poetics. The Dhvanyaloka revolutionized Sanskrit literary theory by proposing that the main goal of good poetry is the evocation of a mood or "flavor" (rasa) and that this process can be explained only by recognizing a semantic power beyond denotation and metaphor, namely, the power of suggestion. On the basis of this analysis the Locana develops a theory of the psychology of aesthetic response. This edition is the first to make the two most influential works of traditional Sanskrit literary and aesthetic theory fully accessible to readers who want to know more about Sanskrit literature. The editorial annotations furnish the most complete exposition available of the history and content of these works. In addition, the verses presented as examples by both authors (offered here in verse translation) form an anthology of some of the finest Sanskrit and Prakrit poetry.

For Hindus, Vishnu is God who inspires man to discover humanity by engaging with the world. Artists have visualized him with as curly-haired, dark complexioned man with a smile on his lips and a sparkle in his eyes. Draped in yellow silk, garlanded with forest flowers, bedecked with dolphin-shaped earrings, anointed with sandal paste, he reclines on a thousand-hooded serpent that floats on the ocean of milk and rides a golden hawk bearing in his arms a conch-shell, a wheel, a mace and a lotus. Poets say that when he is awake, the world takes shape; when he is asleep, the world ceases to be. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, follows him wherever he goes. To him is made offerings of rich creamy butter. Sometimes, the upright Ram, he is worshipped across India as Balaji, Shreenathji, Jagannath, Ranganath and Badrinath. Locked in the stories, symbols and rituals of Vishnu is the wisdom of the ancestors, transmitted over hundreds of years. This book attempts to unlock seven secrets that are relevant even in modern times.

Book Manu Gita Mystery of Manu

Download or read book Manu Gita Mystery of Manu written by Lahiri Mahasaya and published by Ancient Kriya Yoga Mission. This book was released on with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a scriptural commentary of Lahiri Mahasaya on Manu Gita, also known as Manu Samhita, Mystery Of Manu, in The Light Of Kriya. Those who are good Kriya practitioners breathe once every hour. If Kriya is practiced in the world according to the Vedic rules, then in all Yugas longevity would be four hundred years. The Veda is the Understanding of the state of Silence beyond sound. Smriti is the Remembering it afterwards through the practice of Kriya. One who listens to the sound of OM until death realizes the ultimate Self (Brahma). Kutastha is the Great Self. Pranayam is the great meditation. There is no greater Truth than holding the mind inward by practicing Kriya. The body does not decay in Yoga. Seeing the supreme Being always is the religion and nothing else. Not to make the mind outward, staying at the perfect state of absolute Knowledge to dissolve the intellect in Brahma, seeing the Form, practicing Omkar Kriyas and seeing Brahma in all beings: in fact, that is called religion. One can tell about the previous life if one stays at Kutastha and does not commit violence. The seeker is advised to practice Kriya even during sleep. The Spinal Cord is the secret source of mystic Energy of the ultimate Self. It is secretly created in that way for that purpose. The results of three Vedas, namely: Rig (Talabya Kriya), Sama (Pranayam with sound) and Yaju (Omkar Kriyas based on Tranquil Breath) : provide eternal Realization.

Book Fundamentals of Astrology

Download or read book Fundamentals of Astrology written by M. Ramakrishna Bhat and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1988 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrology is both Science and Art. Hence only the talented can appreciate and understand it. Rightly Visnugupta declares that nobody other than a sage can master the ocean-like science of astrology. The great Varahamihira declares, No sin will creep into a place that is sanctified by the presence of a true astrologer. No person who studies and divines the course of destiny will ever be found in hell, but will reside permanently in the world of Brahman. This book brings to the fore not only the rationality of astrology but also the nature and structure of the correct knowledge that our forefathers possessed regarding the predictable influences of planets on human beings, and gives a spiritual bias to astrology. The reader is taken step by step in this work from the rudiments Viz., the distribution of constellations in the Zodiacal belt which is divided into twelve Signs, and the planetary hierarchy, through the method of calculating the ascendant and other houses of a natal chart, assessment of the strengths, influences, aspects, affliction, mutual relations etc., of the planets, to the final stage of reading the brighter and darker sides of the subject`s life, his chances of success and failure, their periods, ingress of the soul into the mortal coil and exit thereform as well as its departure to other worlds according to its karma. In this book an attempt has been made to give a good account of the science of astrology, with a view to making the reader a good and true astrologer. It also shows that astrology does not make man a fatalist, a helpless automation in the hands of a merciless Fate. It should, on the other hand, help him to take to self-exertion and self-help. This hoary lore, according to the author, is to be practised not for selfish ends, but to guide the needy and the distressed, to remove the cause of their suffering and to turn their attention towards God.
