Book excerpt: The book contains four chapters discussing dystonia from a new perspective. Dystonia may result from either diffuse or localized pathology of the cerebral cortex, brain stem, or spinal cord. Management of dystonia is challenging, and specific goals should be identified. Dystonia is considered one of the most disabling conditions in the pediatric age group, which may remain until adulthood; treatment is usually unsatisfactory. Meige's syndrome, or "oromandibular dystonia," may be misdiagnosed as temporomandibular joint or psychogenic disorder, which will alter management and delay proper treatment. Dystonia with non-motor disorders includes sleep, cognitive, pain, sensory, and psychiatric disorders, and their pathophysiological and biochemical mechanisms and specific treatment are discussed. This book will be of interest to GPs, neurologists, family physicians, and internal medicine specialists.

Book Machine Learning for Dynamic Software Analysis Potentials and Limits

Download or read book Machine Learning for Dynamic Software Analysis Potentials and Limits written by Amel Bennaceur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine learning of software artefacts is an emerging area of interaction between the machine learning and software analysis communities. Increased productivity in software engineering relies on the creation of new adaptive, scalable tools that can analyse large and continuously changing software systems. These require new software analysis techniques based on machine learning, such as learning-based software testing, invariant generation or code synthesis. Machine learning is a powerful paradigm that provides novel approaches to automating the generation of models and other essential software artifacts. This volume originates from a Dagstuhl Seminar entitled "Machine Learning for Dynamic Software Analysis: Potentials and Limits” held in April 2016. The seminar focused on fostering a spirit of collaboration in order to share insights and to expand and strengthen the cross-fertilisation between the machine learning and software analysis communities. The book provides an overview of the machine learning techniques that can be used for software analysis and presents example applications of their use. Besides an introductory chapter, the book is structured into three parts: testing and learning, extension of automata learning, and integrative approaches.

Book Epistemology and the Social

Download or read book Epistemology and the Social written by Evandro Agazzi and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epistemology had to come to terms with "the social" on two different occasions. The first was represented by the dispute about the epistemological status of the "social" sciences, and in this case the already well established epistemology of the natural sciences seemed to have the right to dictate the conditions for a discipline to be a science. But the social sciences could successfully vindicate the legitimacy of their specific criteria for scientificity. More recently, the impact of social factors on the construction of our knowledge (including scientific knowledge) has reversed, in a certain sense, the old position and promoted social inquiry to the role of a criterion for evaluating the purport of cognitive (including scientific) statements. But this has undermined the traditional characteristics of objectivity and rigor that seem constitutive of science. Moreover, in order to establish the real extent to which social conditionings have an impact on scientific knowledge one must credit sociology with a sound ground of reliability, and this is not possible without a preliminary "epistemological" assessment. These are some of the topics discussed in this book, both theoretically and with reference to concrete cases.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, the advances in and consolidation of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IOM) in several highly complex surgical areas have been undeniable. Currently all modalities of neurophysiological tests (SSEP, MEP, EMG, PEATC, VEP, BRAIN MAPPING, ETC) are performed in the operating room, where they are used to provide trans operative information on the patient’s neurological status in real time (monitoring), and to identify neural structures which are at immediate risk (mapping). With the inarguably positive impact of IOM on surgical outcomes, there is an increasing interest in reliable, technically focused literature. This volume provides cutting-edge information in the field of IOM, and highlights new neurophysiological tools being used in various surgeries. The book’s initial sections cover a range of topics, including an anatomical overview, electrical safety, and detailed technical descriptions of the neurophysiological tests used in IOM. The subsequent sections address e.g. the brain, brainstem, spinal cord, vascular and peripheral nerves, epilepsy, head and neck, movement disorders and special topics. Some chapters are accompanied by videos of surgeries and IOM so that the reader will have the real sensation of having been in the operating room and will gain an overview of the key steps. Written by experts in the field of IOM, the book offers a valuable resource for both experienced and early-career neurophysiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular and orthopedic surgeons, and surgeons involved with pelvic procedures. Further, its goal is to provide a real rapport, never before attained, between neurophysiologists and surgeons with a sole focus: excellence in terms of the final outcome.

Book The Funnel From the Skull Base to the Sacrum

Download or read book The Funnel From the Skull Base to the Sacrum written by Massimiliano Visocchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skull-base surgery is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, which involves the surgeon inserting instruments through the natural openings in the skull—the nose or mouth—or by making a small hole just above the eyebrow. This type of surgery requires a team of specialists, which may include ENT (ear, nose, and throat), maxillofacial and neurosurgeons, as well as radiologists. The craniovertebral junction (CVJ) has a unique anatomical bone and neurovascular structure, which not only separates the subaxial cervical spine but also provides a special cranial flexion, extension and axial rotation pattern. As such, a sound knowledge of the basic principles of spine instrumentation and the region’s kinematics are essential when it comes to strategic preoperative planning. Skull-base, craniovertebral junction, spine demolitive and reconstructive surgery, neuromodulation, bioengineering and transplantation are recent tools used to improve reconstruction, restoration and rehabilitation – three key words central to the core aim of the Neurorehabilitation and Reconstruction Committee of the WFNS, which is to promte mechanical morphological and functional restoration.
