Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year there are 8.8 million new active cases and nearly two million deaths worldwide from tuberculosis (about 5,000 every day), mostly in the poorest communities of the developing world. One third of the world's population has latent TB which may later develop into an active form of the disease, and it has also become the leading cause of death among people with HIV. Multidrug-resistance is also a growing problem. A key challenge for the public health community is to be able to effectively diagnose patients so that valuable resources and medicines are not wasted on misdiagnosis and repeat treatments. This report, written by an international network of researchers and policy experts, examines the global market for TB diagnostics available for active disease, latent infection, drug resistance and treatment response. It provides a sound basis for diagnostics development suitable for various levels of health systems in industrialised and developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this highly acclaimed text has been extensively revised and greatly expanded to reflect the considerable advances made in our understanding of the mechanisms of asthma and rhinitis. Containing the contributions of 242 experts of international standing, presented in 133 chapters, Asthma and Rhinitis provides an up-to-date, authoritative reference for both the clinician and scientist. The global approach given in this book mirrors the universal approach to the understanding of allergic disease. The editors have carried out a thorough and radical revision of the content by adding 6 new sections and 44 new chapters. Most of this expansion is due to greatly increased coverage of the clinical aspects of asthma, with new sections on childhood asthma and on drug treatment (each drug class has its own chapter). Also, the expansion of research into the genetic basis of asthma has necessitated a whole new section on Genetics, comprising some six chapters. There are also new chapters on adult-onset asthma and the relationship of asthma to sinusitis. A new section on Asthma in Special Circumstances includes chapters on asthma in pregnancy, asthma and surgery, asthma in the elderly and asthma in the context of critical care. In bringing the Second Edition fully up to date, the book has inevitably increased in size, and is now presented in two volumes. The second edition of Asthma and Rhinitis will continue the tradition of its predecessor of providing an up-to-the-minute reference for all those involved in the management of, and research into, asthma and rhinitis.

(Approximately 600 illustrations are new or have been re-rendered in a consistent modern style.) Also new to this edition are advanced 3D narrated animations that address the most clinically relevant and difficult to understand disorders, engaging unit-opening case studies that reinforce critical thinking and set the tone for the content to come, and a wide range of built-in study tools. Book Sarcoidosis and Granulomatosis

Download or read book Sarcoidosis and Granulomatosis written by Mohammad Hosein Motamedi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ, granulomatous disease the etiology of which remains unknown. It is characterized by T-cell dysfunction and B-cell hyperactivity with increased local immune activity and inflammation that leads to the formation of noncaseating granulomas in the organs involved. The lung and lymphatic system are the most commonly affected organs, however virtually any organ may be affected. Other common sites of involvement include the skin, eye, central nervous system, and the heart. Patients may present different symptoms related to the disease stage and the specific organ involved. Sarcoidosis is a global disease, and its prevalence has increased twofold over the past years. Due to the clinical heterogeneity and variable diagnostic criteria in different countries, it is difficult to calculate the exact prevalence and incidence of sarcoidosis. Age, sex, race, and geographic origin significantly influence the incidence of sarcoidosis. The book at hand seeks to assess the current diagnostic techniques, imaging techniques, differential diagnosis of this disease, as well as other granulomatous diseases mimicking sarcoidosis.

Book Aerosols Handbook

In addition, it looks at nanometer particles, the mechanism of aerosol deposition in the lungs, and modeling deposition with a corresponding uncertainty in risk assessment. The text also emphasizes the importance of accurate aerosol measurements, particularly breathing zone exposure assessments. Examining radioactive aerosols, the book discusses lessons learned from nuclear accidents, radon and thoron, and long-lived radionuclides in the environment. It brings together research on both radioactive and nonradioactive aerosols, supplying readers with a more complete view of how aerosols behave in the lungs. New in This Edition Five new chapters that address the safety of nanomaterials, dealing with nanoparticle cell penetration, high aspect ratio nanomaterials, nanoaerosols in drug delivery, risk assessment, and health effects New chapters on atmospheric pollution related to climate change, chemical analyses of particle filter deposits, and classical nucleation theory New data on measurement, dosimetry, and health effects Updated throughout, this second edition continues to be an essential resource for those who study exposure, dosages, and toxicity to develop treatments for exposure, reduce air pollution, and establish better safety regulations, particularly in industries using nanotechnologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This easy-access guide summarizes the dynamic specialty of rehabilitation psychology, focusing on real-world practice in the medical setting. It begins by placing readers at the frontlines of practice with a solid foundation for gathering information and communicating effectively with patients, families, and staff. The book’s topics run a wide gamut of patient conditions (neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular), related problems (sleep and fatigue issues, depression) and practitioner responses (encouraging coping and compliance, pediatric and geriatric considerations). Models of disability and adaptation, review of competency concerns, and guidelines for group and individual therapy offer evidence-based insights for helping patients manage their health conditions, benefit from rehabilitation interventions, and prepare for their post-rehabilitation lives and activities. Coverage spotlights these core areas: ·Basics and biopsychosocial practicalities, from behavioral medicine and psychopharmacology to ethical and forensic issues. ·Populations, problems, and procedures, including stroke, TBI, substance abuse, transplants, and severe mental illness. ·Assessment and practical interventions such as pain, anxiety, cognitive functioning, and more. ·Consultation, advocacy, and interdisciplinary teams. ·Practice management, administration, and professional self-care. ·Research, technology, and program evaluation. Practical Psychology in Medical Rehabilitation is an essential professional development tool for novice (and a refresher for veteran) psychologists and neuropsychologists, as well as rehabilitation physicians, nurses, therapists, psychiatrists, and social workers. Book Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Vols 1 and 2

Download or read book Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Vols 1 and 2 written by SK Jindal and published by JP Medical Ltd. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 2296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book published in two volumes. Both volume divided in twenty three sections, all sections and chapters are most important. The Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine also offers a unique exposure to the problems in many parts of the world. Tuberculosis, the “number one” treatable condition has been extensively covered; and special topics such as multi-drug resistance, directly observed therapy, TB prevention, nonpharmacologic approaches and extapulmonary tuberculosis are particularly relevant. Many countries are facing a growing burden of noncommunicable respiratory diseases. They have become the second leading cause of death after injuries, and their impact on indirect costs such as loss of work and home productivity is enormous. These problems are addressed and measures of prevention such as smoking cessation are included. Other special challenges including topics such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, climate change, poisoning with pesticides, snakebite toxicity, pulmonary manifestations of tropical infections and industrial accidents such as the tragedy seen in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, with methyl isocyanate, have been well covered. However, as globalization flattens the playing field, and countries leap to industrialization, cultural beliefs, natural resources, climate and geography have slowed the pace of development in many parts of the world. Poverty leads to malnutrition, homelessness, lack of education, and poor access to health care. Overcrowded cities and rural underdevelopment are other challenges that impact health in the various parts of the world. Moreover, epidemics of HIV, drug abuse and smoking addiction take a greater toll on the population. Yes, the world is flat, but the terrain is filled with mountains and valleys and local problems demand local solutions. And these local problems need to be explored and presented with a scholarly perspective. The Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine has successfully incorporated these sociodemographic factors into the subject matter. The text is well-written and the chapters are carefully referenced with subjects found in all traditional pulmonary and critical care textbooks, e.g. airway diseases, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, pulmonary neoplasia, pulmonary infection, sleep and critical care. There are several nontraditional sections as well that are practical and especially helpful to the practicing physician. These include a section on the symptom approach to lung disease, an overview of the pharmacologic agents used to treat lung disease, and a comprehensive review of methods in lung diagnosis from the simple history and physical examination to the latest complex tools of interventional pulmonology. The textbook is especially unique because of the abundance of illustrations, flow charts and tables. There are many radiographic and pathologic reproductions that are especially helpful.
