Book excerpt: Jambo! Experience deepest, darkest Africa! It's the beautiful but dangerous setting for this shocking saga of one Sudanese family's staggering adversity that mirrors present-day Africa. Decimated and put into iron-clad slavery, the family is split apart and sold to the highest bidders in West Africa. Rune Erikson becomes infatuated with a beautiful South African UN worker. The seductress pulls him into a vortex of slavery and blood diamonds. Hatari, the fifth novel in a series, features the somewhat-jaded-but-dashing Rune Erikson, who desperately searches through diamond fields from Canada's frozen Arctic to steaming equatorial Africa. Rune rides camels through the shifting sands of Timbuktu, then treks through the muddy diamond pits of Congo, the beautiful port of Cape Town, the wild bushveldt of Johannesburg, the zealotry of Zimbabwe, the intrigue of Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Mombasa, the nonsentient streets of Nairobi, and is initiated into the ways of the colourful warriors of the Masai Mara. Braving marauding lions, snorting hippos, stomping elephants, and soul-sapping jungle humidity, Rune fights African warlords and diamond smugglers in his quest for justice. Coloured by romance and spiced with eroticism, this adventure lures Rune off his sailing ketch, Valhalla, in Victoria's Fisherman's Wharf into the soft arms of a sizzling South African Dutch enchantress, becoming embedded in the myths and legends of tribal Africa. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Emily March brings her "unique charm and delightful sense of humor" (Romantic Times) to heat up the Scottish highlands in this laugh-out-loud sequel to her delicious Simmer All Night. She needs a ghost, not a groom... Of all the castles in all of Scotland, it's Gillian Ross's bad luck to live in one that isn't haunted. The ancestral home must be sold, but the single interested buyer requires a wraith in the rafters. With her family in danger, Gillian will do anything to protect them, so she dons a disguise and sets out to haunt her home herself. Her plan might have worked, had her first tantalizing target not revealed more than she bargained for... He'd rather be dead than wed. Handsome as the devil but with a scoundrel's heart, Jake Delaney has come to Rowanclere Castle to locate a missing historical treasure, not a wife. When a gorgeous "ghost" visits his bedchamber, his curiosity--among other things--is aroused. Unaware that his probing might lead to both mayhem and marriage, he vows to discover her secrets before leaving the Highlands. His plan might have worked, too, had he not been haunted by visions of a seductive Scottish sprite and the dream that man's castle could somehow become his home.

Book Free Lancers and Literary Biography in South Africa

Download or read book Free Lancers and Literary Biography in South Africa written by Stephen Gray and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is concerned with the problems and pleasures of writing literary biography in the context of South African writing. Stephen Gray's introduction outlines the choice faced by the researcher: between writing revisionist history (à la Strachey) and the personal bias the portraitist must take into account when conducting the retrieval especially of lost and enigmatic figures (à la Symons). Concentrating on the unattached irregulars of the arts in South Africa - often the arts of their times - Gray stresses the value of the free-lance figure in the formation of an evolving colonial and post-colonial literature. Subjects included are: Charles Maclean, alias John Ross, who recorded his experiences of the Zulu King Shaka in Natal's first captivity narrative; Douglas Blackburn, rated as the successor of Swift for his satires of the Anglo-Boer War conflict; Beatrice Hastings, polymath journalist whose lovers included Katherine Mansfield and Amedeo Modigliani; Stephen Black, founder of indigenous South African drama in English; Edward Wolfe, the Bloomsbury painter who began as a child-actor in the mining town of Johannesburg; Bessie Head, who became the Botswana-based wise-woman of African literature before her untimely death in 1986, yet never knew her own origins; Etienne Leroux, the Free State rancher who, in Afrikaans, wrote much-banned postmodernist novels; Mary Renault whose bestselling novels set in Ancient Greece peculiarly represented the shutdown of democracy in apartheid South Africa; Sipho Sepamla, stalwart of the Soweto Poetry school which came to prominence after the 1976 Soweto uprising; and Richard Rive, novelist, cultural commentator and liberation icon, murdered in his prime. The portrait gallery of the figures who have shaped and defined the role of literature in South Africa is both revealing and provocative, showing the route taken by some lesser-known talents in their struggle to establish the rights of authors in an often indifferent or repressive state.

Book Securing Wilderness Landscapes in South Africa

Download or read book Securing Wilderness Landscapes in South Africa written by Harry Wels and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private wildlife conservation is booming business in South Africa! Nick Steele stood at the cradle of this development in the politically turbulent 1970s and 1980s, by stimulating farmers in Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) to pool resources in order to restore wilderness landscapes, but at the same time improve their security situation in cooperative conservancy structures. His involvement in Operation Rhino in the 1960s and subsequent networks to save the rhino from extinction, brought him into controversial military (oriented) networks around the Western world. The author’s unique access to his private diaries paints a personal picture of this controversial conservationist.
