Book Sixty Years Experience as an Irish Landlord

Download or read book Sixty Years Experience as an Irish Landlord written by H. C. White and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Years' Experience as an Irish Landlord: Memoirs of John Hamilton, D. L. Of St. Ernan's, Donegal I. Mr. Hamilton as a Landlord. - II. The Irish Land Question. - Comparison between French Peasantry and Irish Peasantry. - What constitutes Nationality? - Traditions of Race or of Religion, or these two combined? - Examples. - III. Mr. Hamilton's writings on Religious Questions. The Irish land question and landlord class have much occupied public attention during the last thirty years. Much legislative action, culminating in the Land Purchase Act of 1891, has been the result. This Act of 1891 is a crossing of the Rubicon from one order of things to another, and, like the Reform Bill of 1832, denotes a fundamental change, from which in course of time many subsidiary changes will be a natural evolution. The present outlook seems to indicate that the Irish system of land tenure will approximate more and more towards the French system, having some large properties and very numerous small properties in land. Book The Land and the People of Nineteenth Century Cork

Download or read book The Land and the People of Nineteenth Century Cork written by James S. Donnelly Jr and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975. Using estate records, local newspapers and parliamentary papers, this book focuses upon two central and interrelated subjects – the rural economy and the land question – from the perspective of Cork, Ireland’s southernmost country. The author examines the chief responses of Cork landlords, tenant farmers and labourers to the enormous difficulties besetting them after 1815. He shows how the great famine of the late 1840s was in many ways an economic and social watershed because it rapidly accelerated certain previous trends and reversed the direction of others. He also rejects the conventional view of the land war of the 1880s, arguing that in Cork it was essentially a ‘revolution of rising expectations’, in which tenant farmers struggled to preserve their substantial material gains since 1850 by using the weapons of ‘agrarian trade unionism’, civil disobedience and unprecedented violence. This title will be of interest to students of rural history and historical geography.

  • Author : Edward Burke
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press

  • ISBN : 1009469312

Download or read book Ulster s Lost Counties written by Edward Burke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1920, the three Ulster counties of Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan were excluded from Northern Ireland. What happens to an abandoned people? And what is the impact on subsequent generations? At a time of uncertainty over the future of Northern Ireland, the history of Ulster loyalists who found themselves on the 'wrong side' of the Irish border is especially relevant. Memories of the violence and betrayal experienced by one generation of protestants in the three counties entrenched an intergenerational Ulster loyalist identity. Subsequently, three-county loyalists who moved across the border played an important role in militant politics. Examining armed resistance in these counties and the radicals who came from them, Edward Burke argues that violence or terrorism perpetrated by 'lost Ulster' loyalists enjoyed considerable success. Spanning the Anglo-Irish War to the Troubles and beyond, Ulster's Lost Counties demonstrates the grip of identity and betrayal since the partition of Ireland.
