Book Sixty Sonnets

Download or read book Sixty Sonnets written by Ernest Hilbert and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.E. Stallings writes that like the minutes of the hour, these Sixty Sonnets both combine to make a whole and shine as individual moments. While groups of these sonnets occasionally suggest a narrative refreshingly, like the fugitives and weary academics that people these pages they work alone. The newspaper crime blotter itself, from which, perhaps, some of these incidents are torn, speaks up as a single sonnet. Here are barflies, high-school dropouts, retired literary critics, washed-up novelists and war-zone reporters, suburbanites and historians, and lyrics with a range of reference from Zippos and Star Wars figures to William James and Thomas Eakins. Mostly in a decasyllabic line that allows for the roughed-up prose rhythms of speech, these sonnets tend to conclude in true iambic pentameter, the tradition that haunts rather than dominates these poems. It is the voice of a less lyrical Prufrock ( We ll head out, you and me, have a pint ), a voice that speaks with unsentimental affection for the failures, the Gentlemen at the Tavern but it is a voice that just as easily could be speaking of the gentlemen at the Mermaid Tavern, and indeed there is something of Marlowe, as well as Eliot, in this sensibility. The evasive presence in the background occasionally speaks in propria persona the wry, worldly-wise voice of the poet himself as much listener as talker something like a sympathetic bartender, scrupulous in his measures, who has heard it all before, but nightly observes every hour unfold afresh from behind the counter. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his own time, Shakespeare was best known to the reading public as a poet, and even today copies of his Sonnets regularly outsell everything else he wrote. For this new edition, Stephen Orgel offers a warmly personal and original introduction to Shakespeare's best-loved and most widely read poems. Careful readings emphasize their sexual and temperamental ambiguity, their textual history and the special perils an editor faces when modernizing the original quarto's spelling, punctuation, and even layout. The edition retains the text of the Sonnets prepared by Gwynne Evans, together with his detailed notes on each, and a line-by-line commentary. Throughout, the 'voices' of the sonnets appear in all their intricacy and dramatic power.

Book excerpt: William Shakespeare is thought to have written his sonnets for a private audience over several years before they were first published in 1609. The verses that compose the sonnets are often subversive, elusive and intimate, shaping an erotic body of poetry in the pursuit of the depths of emotion. Shakespeare's Sonnets express both the narrator's pure love for a 'fair youth , and his uncontrollable desire for a dark lady. There has been much debate concerning the identity of the individuals to whom the sonnets are addressed, and the mysterious dedication "To the onlie begetter of these insuing sonnets Mr W Hall happinesse and that eternitie promised by our ever-living poet wisheth the well-wishing adventurer in setting forth", which appears in the 1609 edition, offers no clear evidence. Shakespeare's sonnets are among the finest ever written in English.

Book William Shakespeare the Sonnets

Download or read book William Shakespeare the Sonnets written by William Shakespeare and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost five hundred years, William Shakespeare has been known the world over as the master of the Sonnet. Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets which comprise two groups, and all are reproduced in this small but stylish collection. In the first 126 Sonnets, Shakespeare speaks of a young friend's beauty, refinement, and goodness, and insists that he must marry and sire children in order to perpetuate that beauty lest it end with his eventual death. The Bard brilliantly and movingly describes the object of his affection in a series of variations on traditional themes of the form. As the sequence progresses, however, the poet expresses disappointment that his friend no longer loves him in return. Ultimately, it appears that the friend has actually stolen the poet's lover, a woman addressed in the latter Sonnets (below). The poet fears that his place in his friend's affections (as well as, perhaps, his literary patronage) has been taken by another, superior poet. The Bard worries that his friend resents his public displays (perhaps referring to Shakespeare's career as an actor), but gradually, over the course of the last several poems of this group, the spirit of love returns, reflecting a reconciliation between the friends. Sonnet 126 closes the series with a return to the subject of the young man's beauty and mortality. Sonnets 127-154 address a woman who has become known as Shakespeare's "Dark Lady" (a woman of dark complexion and, metaphorically, of dark morals) who has betrayed the poet's love by loving other men. The poet complains not only that she has been unfaithful to him, but that she has been so with his friend, the subject of his first 126 Sonnets, thereby leaving him abandoned by both of his loves. Was the love triangle which played out in Shakespeare's 154 Sonnets a situation which played out in his life, or a literary creation - a story told in 154 'chapters' comprised of Sonnets which are not only able to stand alone to move the heart but which, together, move the soul, as well?
