Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In the fall of 1989, I was a wide-eyed teenager bound for college. Less than a month later, I was fighting my way out of a padded room. Sixty Days to Sanity is my best recollection of what happened, when at 18, my world was turned upside down by a severe manic episode and diagnosis of Bipolar I. The focus of this story is the human side of bipolar disorder and how these initial sixty days affected me and those close to me. It's my hope that Sixty Days to Sanity can provide valuable insight to those coping with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and those friends, families and professionals who are attempting to understand it.

Book Penology Justice and Liberty

Download or read book Penology Justice and Liberty written by James C. McEleney and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a person is convicted of a crime what should be done? Should the criminal experience the full wrath of the law (retribution) or be written off as a victim of circumstance, powerless against his/her own biological or psychological tendencies (rehabilitation), or should we focus on the prevention of crime (deterrence) and not the criminal? Because we live in a democracy, whatever policy is employed is done in our name. Do we have a moral and ethical obligation to examine and justify our views on this matter?

Book Ernest W McFarland

Download or read book Ernest W McFarland written by James Elton McMillan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a U.S. senator, Ernest McFarland sponsored more than forty congressional laws, including the landmark GI Bill in 1944. Twice he led the Central Arizona Project (CAP) to passage in the Senate on its way to ultimate success, and his dedication led to his selection as U.S. Senate majority leader. After losing to Barry Goldwater in 1952, McFarland returned to Arizona, led a Democratic resurgence, and became a two-term governor. He enjoyed notable achievements preparing the way for industrial expansion in the state and successfully arguing the CAP case before the U.S. Supreme Court. At age seventy he successfully ran for the Arizona Supreme Court, where he wrote the controversial decision that was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in Miranda v. Arizona. He rose to chief justice in 1968, thus achieving the unique political triple crown of serving in the highest position in the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of state government. Mac passed away in Phoenix in 1984 at age 89, having risen from a log cabin in Oklahoma to Capitol Hill and to the Arizona statehouse, working alongside such notables as Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson in a career marked by selfless concern for the common person and stewardship of his nation.

Book An Epic Swindle

Download or read book An Epic Swindle written by Brian Reade and published by Quercus. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Epic Swindle is the inside story of how Liverpool FC came within hours of being re-possessed by the banks after the shambolic 44-month reign of American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. It is the tale of a civil war that dragged Britain's most successful football club to its knees, through the High Court and almost into administration. Players Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher tell of their anger at the broken promises, as well as their pain at watching loyal fans in open revolt. Manager, chief executive, board members, leading fans and journalists reveal the turmoil at a revered sporting institution run by two men at war with each other, who trampled Liverpool's cherished traditions into the gutter. No story sums up the naked greed at the heart of modern football quite like Hicks' and Gillett's attempt to turn a buck at Liverpool. No-one has had as much access to the truth, or tells it with as much passion, wit and insight as Brian Reade. An Epic Swindle is the riveting story of how close one of the great football clubs came to financial implosion.

Dorie is eager to introduce her sister’s genius to the public, but Catherine is a cloistered nun with a vow of silence who adamantly refuses to show or sell the paintings she dedicates to God. Hoping to get to know her sister and research the potential story, Dorie poses as an aspiring nun at the convent where Catherine lives. Her growing relationship with Catherine helps Dorie come to terms with her adoption, but soon the sisters’ shared biological past and uncertain futures collide as they clash over the meaning and purpose of art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Rose White's late father taught her everything he knew about piloting a Missouri River steamboat. He even named their boat after her. Despite that, it seems that Laura will forever be a "cub pilot" to her brother Joe, because in 1867, a female riverboat captain is unheard of. That is, until tragedy strikes and Laura must make the two month journey from St. Louis to Fort Benton and back in order to save her family's legacy, her home, and the only life she's ever known. The only way for her to overcome the nearly insurmountable odds is with the help of her brother's disreputable friend Finn MacKnight, a skilled pilot with a terrible reputation. Laura loathes having to accept MacKnight as her co-pilot, especially when she learns she must also provide passage for his two sisters. Straight-laced Fiona has a fear of water, and unpredictable Adele seems much too comfortable with the idea of life in the rough and tumble environment of the untamed river and the men who ply it. Though they are thrown together by necessity, this historic journey may lead Laura and the MacKnights to far more than they ever expected.
