Book Hockey Night in Canada

Download or read book Hockey Night in Canada written by Michael McKinley and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hockey Night in Canada has reached a great age (and for television, practically an immortal one) because it made itself into something that Canada couldn't live without. It is this surge of emotion that connected us all each week, and which connects us through the years to now. Hockey Night in Canada didn't just aim a camera at a game and observe what happened-it actively gave the country a prism through which it could see itself and its evolving diversity. We look where the eye of Hockey Night in Canada looks, and it looks at us. We remember what it remembers. We feel what it feels. That is the dynamic that has made the show much more than a long-lived TV success; it is a cultural juggernaut. Ask fans where they saw their first hockey game, and chances are it was on Hockey Night in Canada. Ask the players-male or female-what first got them into the rink, and the answer will be the same: they wanted to be like the players on Hockey Night in Canada.

Almost forty years after Rosalind Krauss wrote Sculpture in the Expanded Field, physical works of art continue to splinter and move further from their entrenched institutionalized categorization. In the last twenty years alone, our understanding of what sculpture is has dramatically shifted. But have the discussions surrounding sculpture evolved in tandem? Sculpture is hardly a singular term for an artwork, especially an artwork that inhabits space or is the space itself. Strange Devices frames contemporary sculpture as neospatial production.Essay's included: Strange Devices and Unintentional VicesInterview's included: Janine Antoni, Rina Banerjee, Matthew Barney, Lowry Burgess, Lenka Clayton, Lewis Colburn, Young Joon Kwak, Athena Lynch, Katie Paterson, Charles Ray, Jon Rubin, Arcangelo Sassolino, Shoplifter, Simon Starling, and Julianne Swartz. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaysia is among the most ethnically diverse and culturally rich nations on earth. Yet much of its cultural wealth lies buried beneath the rubric of its main Malay, Chinese and Indian “race” categories; the dazzling diversity within and outside these groups remains largely unexplored. This book uncovers some of this fascinating diversity through the stories of five little-known acculturated ethnic groups in Peninsula Malaysia. The author, a Malaysian sociologist, delivers an insightful and lucid study of these groups, with some surprising findings. These communities illustrate how much more cross-cultural mingling, sharing and co-dependence there is within Malaysian society than we care to recognize, admit or celebrate. This raises various questions: Is a similar process of spontaneous inter-ethnic interaction possible between larger ethnic groups today? How can we foster such acculturation, and can it by itself contribute to ethnic harmony? The author also discovers that despite their long settlement and deep acculturation, segments of these groups are anxious about their future, and pine for an indigenous identity. What are the implications of this trend for ethnic relations, and how can it be resolved? This book traces the acculturation journey of these communities and draws lessons for ethnic relations in one of the most complex multi-ethnic nations in the world. It will appeal to scholars, students, laymen and visitors interested in migration, history, culture, ethnicity and heritage in Malaysia and the region.
