Book excerpt: Life Science studies in space were initially driven by the need to explore how man could survive spaceflight conditions; the effects of being launched un der high accelerations, exposed to weightlessness and radiation for different periods of time, and returned to Earth in safety. In order to substantiate the detailed knowledge of potentially adverse effects, many model experiments were launched using organisms which ranged from bacteria, plants, inverte brates, rodents and primates through to man. Although no immediate life threatening effects were found, these experiments can be considered today as the precursors to life science research in space. Many unexplained effects on these life forms were attributed to the condition of weightlessness. Most of them were poorly recorded, poorly published, or left simply with anecdotal information. Only with the advent of Skylab, and later Spacelab, did the idea emerge, and indeed the infrastructure permit, weightlessness to be considered as an ex tended tool for research into some fundamental mechanisms or processes as sociated with the effect of gravity on organisms at all levels. The initial hy pothesis to extrapolate from hypergravity through 1 x g to near 0 x g effects could no longer be retained, since many of the experiment results were seen to contradict the models or theories in the current textbooks of biology and physiology. The past decade has been dedicated primarily to exploratory research.

The papers in this volume fall into a number of main and topical research areas namely: - the measurement and behaviour of natural radionuclides in the environment - cosmic radiation measurement and dosimetry - the external penetrating radiation field at ground level - TENR (Technologically Enhanced Natural Radiation) and NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) studies - assessment of the health effects of radon - regulatory aspects of natural radiation exposuresIn these papers the results of many new surveys of natural radionuclide levels in the environment and of improved methods of detection are described. While some of the natural radiation sources investigated are unmodified by human activity, many accounts are given here of exposures to natural sources which have been enhanced by technology. Such TENR and NORM exposures are shown to range from activities such as mining, oil and gas exploitation, the use of industrial by-products as building materials, to space travel to name but a few. In several cases quite high doses to some individuals are shown to occur. Accounts are given here of methods to prevent and reduce exposures to such sources.

The engineering design of biologically closed ecological systems suitable for very long term space flight or space colonies is also described. This volume is comprised of 41 chapters and begins with a discussion on closed regenerative life support systems for space travel and their implications for ecological science. Subsequent chapters examine closed ecology in space from a bioengineering perspective; technology requirements for nonterrestrial ecosystems; carbon suboxide polymer as an explanation for the wave of darkening observed on Mars; and volcanism and soil mercury on Mars, along with their consequences for terrestrial microorganisms. The next sections focus on the biology of extreme environments such as Central Antarctica, radiation biology in space, and gravitational physiology in relation to humans and animals. Book excerpt: The measurement of cardio-circulatory and gas-exchange parameters during phy sical exercise - the so-called ergo spirometry or cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) - as a basis of pathophysiological and clinical research has a long tradition in Cologne. Knipping and his coworkers, especially Hollmann, performed basic re search work in healthy subjects. In the area of sports medicine, bicycle or treadmill exercise testing with parallel serial lactate determinations has gained increasing im portance for the assessment of cardiac functional capacity. Also, in other medical disciplines, ergospirometry lost its importance. K. Wasserman in Los Angeles is to be credited for having further improved the method to its present standard, a computerized, on-line measuring and practicable cardiopulmonary exercise testing procedure. The prerequisites were technical innovations, such as continuously measuring gas analyzers and personal computers. Thereby, the knowledge about physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical circumstances of cardiocirculatory and re spiratory regulation during exercise were significantly extended. The working groups of W. Hollmann, Cologne, and K. Wasserman, Los Angeles, determined normal values for the gas-exchange parameters and derived values for healthy normals in large populations. Wasserman and coworkers were able to introduce a differential diagnostic concept for patients suffering from various cardiovascular and cardio pulmonary diseases. Many cardiologists, working, for example in myocardial failure or with rate-adaptive pacemakers, belong to those who recommended the modem, computerized ergo spirometry. Furthermore, this method is controversely discussed· by colleagues working in sports medicine and pulmonary function.
