Download or read book Seeing Red written by Mark Cronlund Anderson and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to examine the role of Canada’s newspapers in perpetuating the myth of Native inferiority. Seeing Red is a groundbreaking study of how Canadian English-language newspapers have portrayed Aboriginal peoples from 1869 to the present day. It assesses a wide range of publications on topics that include the sale of Rupert’s Land, the signing of Treaty 3, the North-West Rebellion and Louis Riel, the death of Pauline Johnson, the outing of Grey Owl, the discussions surrounding Bill C-31, the “Bended Elbow” standoff at Kenora, Ontario, and the Oka Crisis. The authors uncover overwhelming evidence that the colonial imaginary not only thrives, but dominates depictions of Aboriginal peoples in mainstream newspapers. The colonial constructs ingrained in the news media perpetuate an imagined Native inferiority that contributes significantly to the marginalization of Indigenous people in Canada. That such imagery persists to this day suggests strongly that our country lives in denial, failing to live up to its cultural mosaic boosterism.
Download or read book North and South written by Christine DeVine and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North and South is a multi-dimensional look at a prevailing theme in current discourse on the concept of borders. This collection of essays invites us to cross historical, regional, and disciplinary boundaries. The contributors consider a range of primary texts, use a number of critical approaches, and make some surprising connections. The borders created by the concepts of “north” and “south” provoke us to ask if the terms continue to represent real divisions, or if usage and habit have drained them of any real meaning. And how have literary texts sought to represent and elucidate the divisions and to complicate and undermine such rigid categories? This collection of essays considers such questions and offers some tentative and original answers. The essays in North and South treat a wide variety of topics, generically and geographically, chronologically and creatively. They interrogate the elusive topic of boundaries symbolic and literal; boundaries as means of communication rather than division; boundaries that create borderlands; boundaries that invite transgression; boundaries that resist erasure. Across and within these boundaries, the theme of identity emerges: international, national, regional, gendered, racial, ethnic.

This book was released on 1990-12-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six specialists on northern Canadian issues examine the transfer of power from the federal government to the governments of the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Land claims, aboriginal self-government, division of the NWT, the territorial governments' pursuit of fuller recognition in Canadian federalism and devolution all interact in confusing ways. This book makes the best sense of the complex processes underway in the Canadian north.

Download or read book The Politics of Transition in Central Asia and the Caucasus written by Amanda E Wooden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books on the Caucasus and Central Asia are country-by-country studies. This book, on the other hand, fills a gap in Central Eurasian studies as one of the few comparative case study books on Central Eurasia, covering both the Caucasus and Central Asia; it considers key themes right across the two regions highlighting both political change and continuity. Comparative case study chapters, written by regional experts from a variety of methodological backgrounds, provide historical context, and evaluate Soviet political legacies and emerging policy outcomes. Key topics include: the varied types and sources of authoritarianism; political opposition and protest politics; predetermined outcomes of post-Soviet economic choices; social and stability impacts of natural resource wealth; variations in educational reform; international norm influence on gender policy and the power of human rights activists. Overall, the book provides a thorough, up-to-date overview of what is increasingly becoming a significant area of concern.
