Book Alfred Tennyson

Download or read book Alfred Tennyson written by Seamus Perry and published by Northcote House Pub Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: W.H. Auden said of Tennyson that 'he had the finest ear, perhaps, of any English poet'. Many readers have relished his opulent word-music, but less simply admiring critics have sometimes regarded that marvellous verbal gift with something like suspicion - as though it were merely a matter of beautifully empty words, or worse, a distracting screen used to pass off disreputable Victorian values. In this study, Seamus Perry returns to the extraordinary language of Tennyson's verse, and finds in the intricacies of his greatest poetry, not an evasion of responsibilities, but rather the memorably intricate expression of hesitancies and honest doubts - including doubts, not least, about the charms and obligations of his own art. Covering the great range of the poet's long career, Perry describes the rich life of Tennyson's lyrical imagination, exploring in turn its complex and paradoxical fascinations with recurrence, progress, narrative, and loss.

Book excerpt: The poet's reputation has weathered even the most vitriolic attempts to discredit both the man and his writings; and as criticism of the late twentieth century demonstrates, Tennyson's claim to pre-eminence among the Victorians is now unchallenged."

Buckley (Harvard). In Memoriam and Maud are central texts but many other poems are discussed - lyrics, dramatic monologues, narratives, ballads - and such recurrent topics as loss, the numinous, and distance in space and time. The poems are related to their intellectual context and to other poets from Wordsworth to Edward FitzGerald.

Book Tennyson Among the Poets

Download or read book Tennyson Among the Poets written by Robert Douglas-Fairhurst and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to mark the bicentenary of Alfred Tennyson's birth, these essays offer an important revaluation of his achievement and its lasting importance. After several years in which the temper of criticism has been largely political (and often hostile towards Tennyson in particular) a number of influential recent accounts of Victorian poetry have rediscovered the virtues of a closer style of reading and the benefits and pleasures of an approach that, without at all ignoring social and cultural contexts, approaches them through a primary alertness to textual detail and literary history. This volume, including entirely commissioned work by a wide range of critics and scholars from across the profession in both Britain and North America, seeks to bring such forms of attention to bear on the immense variety of Tennyson's career by exploring the complex and multiple connections between Tennyson and other writers - his predecessors, his contemporaries, and his successors. Collectively, the essays describe an intricate network of affiliation and indebtedness, resistance and reconciliation. They provide a unique assessment of Tennyson's origins, work, and imaginative legacy as he enters upon his third century.

Book excerpt: "This book was born out of the curiosity aroused in me by Tennyson's Maud and "Locksley Hall," ostensibly dramatic poems which were strangely flawed, I always felt, by some hidden emotional connection with the poet's own life. What was it? . . . The final result of my inquiry is this book." --From the Preface by the Author This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Tennysonian Love

Download or read book Tennysonian Love written by Gerhard Joseph and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1969-04-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tennysonian Love was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. In the century or so since Alfred Tennyson's poetry reached the height of its popularity and critical acclaim, the pendulum of criticism has swung wide in opposite directions. From the earlier idolatry to the later ridicule, that pendulum has now settled into a position of qualified and selective praise from which a more thoughtful consideration of the poet is possible. Consequently, as this critical study suggests, new values and dimensions are recognizable in his work. Professor Joseph, concentrating on the theme of love but involving in his argument other facets of Tennyson's achievement, demonstrates the thesis that the poet moved as in a "strange diagonal." This phrase used as the subtitle of the book comes from Tennyson's poem The Princess in which the narrator "moved as in a strange diagonal / And maybe neither pleased myself nor them." As the author shows, Tennyson throughout his work moved between a Platonic conception of love in which the highest kind of spiritual love has disencumbered itself of sense and a Neoplatonic ("Dantesque") one in which sense and soul tend to merge. In coming to terms with the nineteenth-century form of this divided Western heritage, the pietism of the evangelical revival on the one hand and the idealized eroticism of his Romantic predecessors on the other, Tennyson became the exemplary poet of Victorian love. No other Victorian poet, Professor Joseph concludes, exhibits quite his representative and successful blending of these clashing strains. For while moving between the alternate traditions of Western love, Tennyson was able to forge a large body of highly disciplined, beautifully wrought, and far-ranging verse.
