Book Six Suites for Violoncello Solo

Download or read book Six Suites for Violoncello Solo written by David Starkweather and published by . This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the Bach Cello Suites is appealing to both the scholar and the performer. The genesis of this edition was the alignment of the relevant manuscripts for easy comparison and study using a line-by-line layout. It has resulted in the ultimate scholarly approach to the study of these manuscripts and has led to many discoveries concerning notes, trills, dots, dynamics, and rhythm. In the scordatura version of "Suite No. 5," pitch names are given above the notes for the re-tuned top string, clarifying confusing elements in the notation. Fingerings and bowings in this edition reflect those used on the DVD set of Starkweather's performance of the suites (item number 730150). Reference to the manuscript edition makes it possible to visually assess the ambiguity of many of the slurs and to reach one's own conclusions.

'Isserlis is the master of the material, yet always able to make it accessible . . . It is an absolute treat to be led to this sublime music by such an ethusiastic expert.' MICHAEL PALIN 'The book I've always wanted: an accessible, eloquent guide to the world's greatest - and maybe most elusive - pieces of music. And written by the man I'd want to tell me about it. This is such a delight.' DERREN BROWN 'Illuminating.' OBSERVER 'Striking.' THE SPECTATOR Bach's six Cello Suites are among the most cherished of all the works in the classical music literature. Shrouded in mystery - they were largely unknown for some two hundred years after their composition - they have acquired a magical aura which continues to attract and fascinate audiences the world over. To cellists they represent a musical bible, to listeners, scarcely less. Through what are on the surface simple dance suites, Bach takes us on a spiritual journey like no other, leading us from joy to tragedy, concluding in jubilation, even triumph. Award-winning international cellist Steven Isserlis, whose recent recording of the Suites met with the highest critical acclaim, goes deep into that emotional journey, bringing to bear all his many years' experience of performing the Suites. His book is intended as a rewarding companion for all music lovers, ranging from the casual listener to the performing musician. By offering his own very personal observations of the music, Isserlis's aim is to take the reader further into the world of the Suites in order to enhance the experience of hearing some of the greatest works ever composed. Praise for Steven Isserlis' BACH: THE CELLO SUITES 'The most wonderful cello-playing, surely among the most consistently beautiful to have been heard in this demanding music.' GRAMOPHONE 'Isserlis has done the impossible. He has given the listener something new, and indeed something outstandingly good . . . This recording can sit proudly on the shelf alongside the great recordings of Casals and Rostropovich. In fact, I may find myself picking it up as the favourite.' BBC RADIO 3

Download or read book The Cello Suites written by Eric Siblin and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning journey through Johann Sebastian Bach’s six cello suites and the brilliant musician who revealed their lasting genius. One fateful evening, journalist and pop-music critic Eric Siblin attended a recital of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suites—an experience that set him on an epic quest to uncover the mysterious history of the entrancing compositions and their miraculous reemergence nearly two hundred years later. In pursuit of his musicological obsession, Siblin would unravel three centuries of intrigue, politics, and passion. Winner of the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction and the McAuslan First Book Prize, The Cello Suites weaves together three dramatic narratives: the disappearance of Bach’s manuscript in the eighteenth century, Pablo Casals’s discovery and popularization of the music in Spain in the late nineteenth century, and Siblin’s infatuation with the suites in the present day. The search led Siblin to Barcelona, where Casals, just thirteen and in possession of his first cello, roamed the backstreets with his father in search of sheet music and found Bach’s lost suites tucked in a dark corner of a store. Casals played them every day for twelve years before finally performing them in public. Siblin sheds new light on the mysteries that continue to haunt this music more than 250 years after its composer’s death: Why did Bach compose the suites for the cello, then considered a lowly instrument? What happened to the original manuscript? A seamless blend of biography and music history, The Cello Suites is a true-life journey of discovery, fueled by the power of these musical masterpieces. “The ironies of artistic genius and public taste are subtly explored in this winding, entertaining tale of a musical masterpiece.” —Publishers Weekly “Siblin’s writing is most inspired when describing the life of Casals, showing a genuine affection for the cellist, who . . . used his instrument and the suites as weapons of protest and pleas for peace.” —Booklist, starred review

Book Six Suites for Viola Solo

Download or read book Six Suites for Viola Solo written by Roisber Narvaez and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1.685-1.750) URTEXT Adaptation for viola, edited and transcribed by Roisber NarvaezThroughout history numerous musicians have had discrepancies between arcades, articulations, notation and phrasing for the execution of the six Solo Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012 by Johann Sebastian Bach who wrote around 1720 during his performance as a chapel master in the court of Cöthen. It is quite certain that the Suites were intended to form a second part of a collection or a larger complex of which the first part is composed of the work Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, BWV 1001-1006, dated in 1720 with the Bach's own hand. The absence of an autograph copy of the composer does not make it possible to have an accurate answer on how the work should be interpreted accurately, caused by the inequality between the four existing manuscripts:1: a copy prepared by his wife Anna Magdalena between 1727 and 1731.2: a copy prepared by Johann Peter Kellner in 1726.3: a copy prepared by two anonymous written in the middle of the 18th century.4: an anonymous copy dating from the end of the 18th century. This has given players the opportunity to contribute musical ideas about the Suites. However, this version presented for Viola, is based on the manuscript of Anna Magdalena Bach 1727-1731.

Book Johann Paul von Westhoff Six Suites for Solo Violin

Download or read book Johann Paul von Westhoff Six Suites for Solo Violin written by Dr. Sarah Jones-Hayes and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unknown until their discovery was announced in 1971 by Péter Várnai in an article in Die Musikforschung, this set of six suites for solo violin, published in 1696, is in all likelihood a second edition of, or second collection to his First Dozen Allemandes, Courantes, Sarabands, and Gigues for Solo Violin without Basso Continuo published in 1682 which are considered lost. Along with his suite for solo violin published in 1683 in Le Mercure Galant, these suites for unaccompanied violin are the first in their medium and undoubtedly served as an inspiration for Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. This edition is a modern transcription of Westhoff’s unique notation and provides editorial fingering and bowing suggestions. A facsimile of the only extant 1696 publication, which is housed in the Somogyi Károly Városi és Megyei Könyvtár in Szeged, Hungary, is included in the back of this edition for reference. This edition was created with the intention of making these suites more accessible, and to be used as a pedagogical tool in preparation for the study of solo Bach.

Book Cello Practice Cello Performance

Download or read book Cello Practice Cello Performance written by Miranda Wilson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-05-27 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to perform expressively on the cello? In Cello Practice, Cello Performance, professor Miranda Wilson teaches that effectiveness on the concert stage or in an audition reflects the intensity, efficiency, and organization of your practice. Far from being a mysterious gift randomly bestowed on a lucky few, successful cello performance is, in fact, a learnable skill that any player can master. Most other instructional works for cellists address techniques for each hand individually, as if their movements were independent. In Cello Practice, Cello Performance, Wilson demonstrates that the movements of the hands are vitally interdependent, supporting and empowering one another in any technical action. Original exercises in the fundamentals of cello playing include cross-lateral exercises, mindful breathing, and one of the most detailed discussions of intonation in the cello literature. Wilson translates this practice-room success to the concert hall through chapters on performance-focused practice, performance anxiety, and common interpretive challenges of cello playing. This book is a resource for all advanced cellists—college-bound high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, educators, and professional performers—and teaches them how to be their own best teachers.
