Book Keeping Students in School

Download or read book Keeping Students in School written by Margaret Terry Orr and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multiple causes and complex nature of the dropout problem require a variety of program approaches to help both at-risk students and dropouts. Twelve-Together (Detroit, Michigan), Adopt-a-Student (Atlanta, Georgia), and the Summer Youth Employment Program (New Bedford, Massachusetts) are supplemental services providing counseling and job readiness preparation for marginally at-risk students. The Secondary Credit Exchange Program (Washington State), the Murray-Wright High School Day-Care Center (Detroit, Michigan), and the Adolescent Primary Health Care Clinic (Houston, Texas) target youth whose economic, family, or personal responsibilities keep them out of school. The Job Readiness Program (Chicago, Illinois), Project COFFEE (Oxford, Massachusetts), and Rich's Academy (Atlanta, Georgia) are comprehensive school-affiliated programs targeting students with serious academic and attendance problems. The Alternative Schools Network (Chicago, Illinois) and Educational Clinics (Washington State) are comprehensive programs for out-of-school youth. The Systemic Approach to Dropout Prevention (New York, New York) and the Dropout Prevention and Recovery Program (Los Angeles, California) combine targeted and general strategies to increase the number of students who stay in school and graduate. The Boston Compact (Boston, Massachusetts) is a citywide approach that includes businesses, universities, and other social agencies. The following materials are appended: (1) a list of 45 references: (2) an explanation of the research methodology; (3) the field visit guide; and (4) a list of contacts. (FMW)

Download or read book An Answer to Disenfranchised Students written by Sharon D. Jones Deloach and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many school districts across this great nation are facing serious patterns of underachievement of students who do not fit well in a mainstream educational environment. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of graduates from a credit-recovery nontraditional alternative high school that influenced his or her graduation. Nationally, many high school students are not earning sufficient credits to remain on grade level with their freshman level cohort. These at-risk students need options with stronger incentives to obtain high school credits and meet graduation requirements. Credit-recovery nontraditional alternative high schools involve an at-risk student population who are at a greater risk of academic, social, and emotional struggles. These students benefit from additional support that a nontraditional setting offers. This study involved interviewing 12 high school graduates who attended and graduated from a credit-recovery nontraditional alternative high school. There was a diversified group by age and other demographics representing five graduating classes. With this research study, the investigator determined graduates’ perceptions of credit recovery in their nontraditional alternative high school were overwhelmingly positive. The lived experiences explored in this study may help school leaders, policy makers, teachers, staff, parents, and community partners understand the unique needs of this population.

Book Instructional and Structural Factors Related to Successful Dropout Prevention and Recovery Programs

Download or read book Instructional and Structural Factors Related to Successful Dropout Prevention and Recovery Programs written by Hector Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify the salient factors that influence student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to return to school as well as the programmatic factors, both structural and instructional, that support students to compete graduation. Three research questions guided the study including: (1) What district-wide programmatic interventions, both structural and instructional, seem to be successful in retaining recovered dropouts and in keep students on the verge of dropping out in school actively engaged in pursuing graduation? (2) What motivates student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to return to school? and (3) What motivates recovered student dropouts and students on the verge of dropping out to remain in school? Accordingly, this study was designed with a qualitative collective case study approach to examine one high school dropout prevention program and one dropout recovery campus. Data collection included document reviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. Findings revealed stakeholders’ perceptions of the efficacy of several structural interventions to keep students on track to graduation. These included creating an academic options framework to meet student academic needs, using student cohort groups to monitor academic progress, and using campus leaver teams to track students who withdrew from school. Furthermore, the findings show the benefits of several instructional interventions including an online curriculum offering students flexibility to complete lost course credits, academic support through direct teaching and small group instruction, and individualized academic plans based on student needs. Finally, results showed that students were primarily motivated to return to school based on positive family influences and a desire for a better future. The study also revealed that students remained in school because of positive teacher relationships, small class sizes, and support services.

Book excerpt: Effectively tracking high school dropouts poses a problem for schools, districts, and states because many at-risk students are transient; it is hard to keep track of these students as they move from school to school, program to program, and even state to state. However, no matter what the precise number is, the high school dropout rate in America is simply too high. Numerous studies bring to life the negative consequences of dropping out of school for both the individual and society as a whole. Dropout Prevention: A Program That Works will not detail such consequences; rather, it will provide a roadmap for schools and districts that want to and must implement an effective dropout prevention program in order to best serve students. The following analogy stresses the importance of implementing an effective dropout prevention program immediately: When an obese person has a heart attack and is taken to the emergency room, the hospital first sends in the doctor to sustain the patient and try to save his life. The hospital does not first call in a nutritionist to discuss the patient's poor diet and lack of exercise. Currently, there are thousands of high school students dying on the ER table listening to a nutritionist.Too often educators say, “I need to see the research supporting that program” before they are willing to implement. But how much research is necessary? Is it enough to see an effective program at another school? Or do you need to have multiple longitudinal studies documenting the results before you are willing to act? How many more students will drop out of your school before you finally declare, “We have to do something”? Research is vital; however, research is not implementation. Many at-risk students simply cannot wait for the research to be conducted and the data compiled: they are on the ER table and need an alternative solution today. Dropout Prevention: A Program That Works provides such a solution.
