Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Years in Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 But the fresh morning air soon revived us sufficiently to take an interest in surrounding objects. It seemed a long way up the winding river, and, after passing an island or two, we di rected our looks eagerly forward, to catch the first glimpse of the city. At length we saw the elegant spire of the cathedral towering above all else; other churches and buildings became visible as the vessel moved onwards, until at last we reached the landing place of the first foreign town I had ever seen. Download or read book Six Months in Italy Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by George Stillman Hillard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in Italy, Vol. 2 of 2 The Duke of Wellington was once asked which was the best description of the battle of Waterloo, and in the course of his reply he said, that it was impossible to describe a battle: each person could recall and re late the incidents in which he himself took part, but nothing more whatever was beyond his own observa tion could make no impression on the memory. This remark applies with more or less force to every thing which comprises the elements of time and movement. A picture 'or a bas-relief may be described distinctly and perfectly; but a series of actions, only in detail, by parcels, and more or less imperfectly. A land scape may be painted with the most minute fidelity, but no eye can catch, no memory retain, the succes sive and fleeting impressions made upon it by a violent storm. Book Paris 1919

  • Author : Margaret MacMillan
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307432963
  • Pages : 626 pages

Download or read book Paris 1919 written by Margaret MacMillan and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark work of narrative history, Paris 1919 is the first full-scale treatment of the Peace Conference in more than twenty-five years. It offers a scintillating view of those dramatic and fateful days when much of the modern world was sketched out, when countries were created—Iraq, Yugoslavia, Israel—whose troubles haunt us still. Winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize • Winner of the PEN Hessell Tiltman Prize • Winner of the Duff Cooper Prize Between January and July 1919, after “the war to end all wars,” men and women from around the world converged on Paris to shape the peace. Center stage, for the first time in history, was an American president, Woodrow Wilson, who with his Fourteen Points seemed to promise to so many people the fulfillment of their dreams. Stern, intransigent, impatient when it came to security concerns and wildly idealistic in his dream of a League of Nations that would resolve all future conflict peacefully, Wilson is only one of the larger-than-life characters who fill the pages of this extraordinary book. David Lloyd George, the gregarious and wily British prime minister, brought Winston Churchill and John Maynard Keynes. Lawrence of Arabia joined the Arab delegation. Ho Chi Minh, a kitchen assistant at the Ritz, submitted a petition for an independent Vietnam. For six months, Paris was effectively the center of the world as the peacemakers carved up bankrupt empires and created new countries. This book brings to life the personalities, ideals, and prejudices of the men who shaped the settlement. They pushed Russia to the sidelines, alienated China, and dismissed the Arabs. They struggled with the problems of Kosovo, of the Kurds, and of a homeland for the Jews. The peacemakers, so it has been said, failed dismally; above all they failed to prevent another war. Margaret MacMillan argues that they have unfairly been made the scapegoats for the mistakes of those who came later. She refutes received ideas about the path from Versailles to World War II and debunks the widely accepted notion that reparations imposed on the Germans were in large part responsible for the Second World War. Praise for Paris 1919 “It’s easy to get into a war, but ending it is a more arduous matter. It was never more so than in 1919, at the Paris Conference. . . . This is an enthralling book: detailed, fair, unfailingly lively. Professor MacMillan has that essential quality of the historian, a narrative gift.” —Allan Massie, The Daily Telegraph (London)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy and Its Inhabitants, Vol. 1 I must request the reader not to lose sight ofthe date of my journey. I visited Italy at a sad time: and I hope to God that much of the misery which I then witnessed no longer exists. But its source is not dried up: the atrocities and suf ferings which I lament, have a perennial spring in the state of things established by short-sighted politicians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Journeys, Vol. 1 We did not know, when we started from home in Venice, on the 8th of November 1864, that we had taken the longest road to Rome. We thought that of all the proverbial paths to the Eternal City that leading to Padua, and thence through Ferrara and Bologna to Florence, and so down the sea-shore from Leghorn to Civita Vecchia, was the best, the briefest, and the cheapest. Who could have dreamed that this path, so wisely and carefully chosen, would lead us to Genoa, conduct us on shipboard, toss us four dizzy days and nights, and set us down, void, battered, and bewildered, in Naples? Book Travels in America and Italy Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 I have nothing particular to say respecting the Travels in America here submitted to the reader: the narrative of them is taken, like the subject of The Natchez, from the original manuscript of the latter work. These T ravels carry with them their commentary and their history. My different works contain frequent recollections of my peregrinations in America. I thought at first to collect them and to introduce them under their proper dates into my narrative, but I relinquished this intention to avoid in serting them twice; I have therefore contented myself with referring to these passages. Some, however, I have quoted when they appeared necessary to the due understanding of the text, and were not too long. Download or read book From Texas to Rome written by Fred L. Walker and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable and very rare memoir discusses the bloody combat history of the Texas National Guard 36th Infantry Division in World War II, from pre-embarkation training through the capture of Rome. The perspective, as seen through the eyes of its author, General Fred Walker, is refreshing for its refusal to rely upon hindsight and revisionist history. Walker led a division longer than any other American officer during World War II. The 36th earned a formidable reputation—and paid a high price for that distinction. Only five divisions in the entire U.S. Army suffered more casualties than the 36th during the course of the war. Some of the division’s fighting included the hard battles of Salerno and Monte Cassino. The 36th was assigned an assault river crossing at the Rapido to outflank the Cassino position and although several companies made it to the far bank, their tank support failed to cross the river. A German panzer grenadier counterattack pushed the infantry of the 36th back across the river with heavy losses. General Mark Clark, the 5th Army Commander, in what appeared to be an effort to scapegoat, relieved several key 36th division officers, although General Walker was retained as its commanding general. After the allies captured Rome, Walker was reassigned to command the Infantry School at Fort Benning. Includes a special guest Preface by Jeffrey W. Hunt, Director of the Texas Military Forces Museum, illustrations, photographs, maps. 504 pages.
