Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Plain Account of Christian Perfection by John Wesley is about the theory of perfection according to Christian theology. Excerpt: "1. WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Book Guide to Christian Perfection

Download or read book Guide to Christian Perfection written by Charles Fitch and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 1997 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...I shall give you such views of truth, and only such as I feel most willing to meet in the great and dreadful day of account.""I shall also give them, as far as possible, in Scripture language, that it may be seen on what I rest my faith, and whether I do, or do not, pervert the word of God...""The all absorbing question with me, so far as my own eternal interests are concerned, is this: How shall I become obedient to that high command of the Most High God, 'Be ye holy for I am holy.' (I Peter 1:16, Lev. 11:44).""Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: (Hebrews 12:14).""The end is near! We have not a moment to lose! Light is to shine forth from God's people in clear, distinct rays, bringing Jesus before the churches and before the world. Our work is not to be restricted to those who already know the truth; our field is the world. The instrumentalities to be used are those souls who gladly receive the light of truth which God communicates to them. These are God's agencies for communicating the knowledge of truth to the world. If through the grace of Christ His people will become new bottles, He will fill them with new wine. God will give additional light, and old truths will be recovered, and replaced in the framework of truth; and wherever the laborers go, they will triumph. As Christ's ambassadors, they are to search the Scriptures, to see for the truths that have been hidden beneath the rubbish of error. And every ray of light received is to be communicated to others. One interest will prevail, one subject will swallow up every other - Christ Our Righteousness." - Review & Herald, Dec. 23, 1890

Book excerpt: Of special focus in this reflective overview of Wesley's theological convictions is highlighting the practical-theological dynamics of Wesley's work and suggesting possible implications for contemporary attempts to recover theology as a practical discipline. Another distinctive focus of this work is a systematic consideration of the integration of theological emphases traditionally divergent in Eastern and Western Christianity. The author also closely examines the consistency of Wesley's thought throughout his career.

Book Pursuing Social Holiness

  • Author : Kevin M. Watson
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-09
  • ISBN : 0190270950

Download or read book Pursuing Social Holiness written by Kevin M. Watson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin M. Watson offers the first in-depth examination of an essential early Methodist tradition: the band meeting, a small group of five to seven people who focused on the confession of sin in order to grow in holiness. Watson shows how the band meeting, which figured significantly in John Wesley's theology of discipleship, united Wesley's emphasis on the importance of holiness with his conviction that Christians are most likely to make progress in the Christian life together, rather than in isolation. Demonstrating that neither John Wesley's theology nor popular Methodism can be understood independent of each other, Watson explores how Wesley synthesized important aspects of Anglican piety (an emphasis on a disciplined practice of the means of grace) and Moravian piety (an emphasis on an experience of justification by faith and the witness of the Spirit) in his own version of the band meeting. Pursuing Social Holiness is an essential contribution to understanding the critical role of the band meeting in the development of British Methodism and shifting concepts of community in eighteenth-century British society.
