Book Seismic Hazards Estimation Study for Vandenberg AFB

Download or read book Seismic Hazards Estimation Study for Vandenberg AFB written by James C. Battis and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seismic hazard at Vandenberg AFB was investigated using both statistical analysis of the temporal and spatial distribution of historic earthquake activity within 500 km of Point Arguello, California, and deterministic methods based on knowledge of earthquake faults and recency of faulting near the installation. The results of these studies included probabilistic estimates of peak ground motions and maximum credible ground motions at Vandenberg AFB. This information was used to generate horizontal design response spectra which are more directly applicable for the analysis of the behavior of engineering structures to earthquake induced motions.

Book Seismic Hazards Studies for Minuteman Missile Wings

Download or read book Seismic Hazards Studies for Minuteman Missile Wings written by James C. Battis and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using standard methods of probabilistic seismic risk analysis, estimates of the seismic hazards for six Minuteman missile wings were evaluated. The wings are located at Malstrom, Ellsworth, Minot, Whiteman, F.E. Warren and Grad Forks Air Force Bases. For each site, estimates of the site intensity, acceleration, velocity and displacement annual risk curves were made based on the historical seismicity within 1000 km of each site. Based on these curves, composite design response spectra for 10-, 100-, and 1000-year return period motions were calculated. Plots of the reported earthquake epicenters near each site were also generated. To conduct these studies, a new method for regional modification of peak acceleration attenuation functions was developed and is presented in the appendix to this report. Modifications to this scheme are presently being made and are expected to result in some change in the risk estimates for Whiteman AFB. (Author).

Book Earthquake Engineering Handbook

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes are nearly unique among natural phenomena - they affect virtually everything within a region, from massive buildings and bridges, down to the furnishings within a home. Successful earthquake engineering therefore requires a broad background in subjects, ranging from the geologic causes and effects of earthquakes to understanding the imp

Book An Overview of the SIGMA Research Project

Download or read book An Overview of the SIGMA Research Project written by Alain Pecker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a summary of the important outcomes of the SIGMA project related to all aspects of Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment: source characterization, rock motion characterization, site response characterization, and hazard calculations, with for all of them emphasis on the treatment of uncertainties. In recent years, attempts have been made to identify and quantify uncertainties in seismic hazard estimations for regions with moderate seismicity. These uncertainties, for which no estimation standards exist, create major difficulties and can lead to different interpretations and divergent opinions among experts. To address this matter, an international research project was launched in January 2011, by an industrial consortium composed of French and Italian organizations. This program, named SIGMA (Seismic Ground Motion Assessment) lasted for five years and involved a large number of international institutions. This book is intended for instructors running courses on engineering seismology, graduate students in the same field and practicing engineers involved in Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analyses.

Book Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction

Download or read book Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction written by Serguei Balassanian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 Armenia was commemorating the tenth anniversary of the catastrophic Spitak earthquake. The Second International Conference on "Earthquake Hazard and Seismic Risk Reduction" sponsored by the Government of the Republic of Armenia and United Nation's International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (UN/IDNDR) was held in dedication to that event between 14-21 September (later referred to as Yerevan Conference). The Yerevan Conference has been organized by the National Survey for Seismic Protection (NSSP) of the Republic of Armenia. All level's decision-makers (from the ministers to the local authorities), politicians, scientists, leaders of the executive and legislative powers, psychologists, leading businessmen, representatives from the private sector and the media as well as from the International Organizations have been invited by the Armenian NSSP to take part in joint discussion of the Seismic Risk Reduction Problem for the first time in the history of such forums. Armenian NSSP's such initiative has been triggered by the experience of the Spitak earthquake and other disasters. They showed that it will be possible to reduce the risks, posed by the natural disaster, only through the common efforts of all the community in co-operation with the International institutions.

Book Earthquakes

Download or read book Earthquakes written by and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An earthquake is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy the whole cities. At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides and occasionally volcanic activity. Earthquakes are caused not only by rupture of geological faults but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. This book addresses the multidisciplinary topic of earthquake hazards and risk, one of the fastest growing, relevant, and applied fields of research and study practiced within the geosciences and environment. This book addresses principles, concepts, and paradigms of earthquakes, as well as operational terms, materials, tools, techniques, and methods including processes, procedures, and implications.
