Download or read book Women Gender Equality and Post Conflict Transformation written by Joyce P. Kaufman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of formal hostilities in any given conflict provides an opportunity to transform society in order to secure a stable peace. This book builds on the existing feminist international relations literature as well as lessons of past cases that reinforce the importance of including women in the post-conflict transition process, and are important to our general understanding of gender relations in the conflict and post-conflict periods. Post-conflict transformation processes, including disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) programs, transitional justice mechanisms, reconciliation measures, and legal and political reforms, which emerge after the formal hostilities end demonstrate that war and peace impact, and are impacted by, women and men differently. By drawing on a strong theoretical framework and a number of cases, this volume provides important insight into questions pertaining to the end of conflict and the challenges inherent in the post-conflict transition period that are relevant to students and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: The State of the World's Children 2007 reports on the lives of women around the world because gender equality and the well-being of children go hand in hand. When women are empowered to live full and productive lives, children prosper and UNICEF's experience also shows the opposite: When women are denied equal opportunity within a society, children suffer. The report is divided into five sections: a call for equality; equality in the household; equality in employment; equality in politics and government; reaping the double dividend of gender equality.

Download or read book Liberia written by Desirée Nilsson and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review of internally displaced persons, refugees and returnees shows in relation to Liberia, the ongoing conflicts where we lack sufficient understanding of migration patterns and the socio-economic conditions of the displaced, an understanding which is a prerequisite for designing appropriate preventive and mitigating action. This review also highlights the severe lack of protection of civilians in Liberia, children in particular, which leads to forced recruitments to local armed groups as well as exposure to sexual violence. While their most important support generally comes from the communities receiving them, which often have very few resources, international humanitarian organizations have not been able to agree on clear mandates with regard to who should have the overall responsibility for assisting them.

Download or read book Essentials of Global Mental Health written by Samuel O. Okpaku and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental illness accounts directly for 14% of the global burden of disease and significantly more indirectly, and recent reports recognise the need to expand and improve mental health delivery on a global basis, especially in low and middle income countries. This text defines an approach to mental healthcare focused on the provision of evidence-based, cost-effective treatments, founded on the principles of sharing the best information about common problems and achieving international equity in coverage, options and outcomes. The coverage spans a diverse range of topics and defines five priority areas for the field. These embrace the domains of global advocacy, systems of development, research progress, capacity building, and monitoring. The book concludes by defining the steps to achieving equality of care globally. This is essential reading for policy makers, administrators, economists and mental health care professionals, and those from the allied professions of sociology, anthropology, international politics and foreign policy.
