Book Mainstreaming Gender Democratizing the State

Download or read book Mainstreaming Gender Democratizing the State written by Shirin Rai and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstreaming Gender, Democratizing the State reflects the commitment of the United Nations to promote mechanisms that aim to achieve equality between women and men. It identifies institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women including national machineries as one of twelve critical areas of concern. National machineries are the primary institutional mechanism entrusted with the implementation of the strategic objectives contained in the goals for equity set by the United Nations. The mandate of these national institutions has evolved from promoting women-specific projects to ensuring that equality concerns are integrated into all government legislation, policy, programs, and budgetary processes. National machineries face serious constraints in fulfilling their mandate including; inadequate financial and human resources, relatively powerless locations within government structures, and insufficient linkage with civil societies. This volume illustrates that the ability of UN-member states to subscribe to the agenda of equality between women and men has been significantly enhanced by the creation of these national-level institutions. National machineries for the advancement of women were initially conceived at the World Conference on the International Women's Year held in Mexico City in 1975 and since then have been considered systematically by world conferences on women in Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985), and Beijing (1995), as well as the sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women. The twenty-third special session of the General Assembly in Beijing reiterated the significant role that national machineries play in promoting equality between women and men, gender mainstreaming, and monitoring of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action as well as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. There has been a long-standing need for a volume to bring together discussions on theory and practice as well as comparative analysis and in-depth case studies of national machineries; this book responds to that need.

Book excerpt: Jamaica is one of a chain of islands -- the West Indian archipelago -- which encircles the Caribbean Sea. Its earliest indigenous people, the Tainos, succumbed to the arrival of western Europeans, inaugurated by the encounter with Columbus in 1494. Spanish rule gave way in 1655 to some 300 years of English colonial rule involving nearly two centuries of plantation slavery. The country finally gained independence in 1962. Jamaica has made some notable contributions in the international arena. Perhaps best known are its contributions in the world of sport, popular music (reggae) and in its development of distinctive forms of dance-theatre and folk music. This wide-ranging volume is a fully revised and updated edition of the work which was first published in 1984.

Book Globalization and Children

Download or read book Globalization and Children written by Natalie Hevener Kaufman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALLISON JAMES Globalization seems to be the word on everyone’s lips, with politicians as much as academics extolling its benefits as well as its contradictions. For some, globali- tion means, in practice, that whether in Bangkok or Boston, in London or Rio, as travelers from wealthy countries they can be sure to find the beer, the pizzas, and the jeans that they can at home; they can be both at home and away simulta- ously. For others, though, globalization has had rather different, often less bene- cial, consequences. In their everyday lives people have come to find themselves tied in, albeit in often unseen ways, into larger economic and political systems over which they have no control; yet these systems cause radical changes—often for the worse rather than the better—in the pattern of their daily lives. And it is those who have least voice whose lives are usually affected the most. In this book attention is drawn systematically—really for the first time—to a consideration of how processes of globalization variously impact upon the lives of children. Such an approach is not only most welcome in the field of childhood studies, but also long overdue. It will, at last, enable us to begin to contextualize in a broader framework some of the many issues to do with ch- dren’s rights and participation which have long been discussed as separate and discrete issues within childhood studies.

Book excerpt: This edited collection addresses a subject which is topical not only in Britain, where there has been a spate of laws and regulations affecting the structure and content of education, but also in developed and developing countries, where the overriding motivation in many cases has been to raise economic performance. The first part of the book deals with the way legislation affects education and training both directly and tangentially, and how the law through its influence on such things as participation rates, certification and employer involvement can affect the level and degree of economic activity. Contributors examine the education systems of the USA, Kenya, Japan, Germany, Nigeria, Britain and France to illustrate the interdependence of the elements involved. The second part focuses on the concept of curriculum control. Chapters take a comparative approach to what is taught in the classroom and how the implementation of legislation affects all aspects of a country's education system.
