Book Situating Josephus Life within Ancient Autobiography

Download or read book Situating Josephus Life within Ancient Autobiography written by Davina Grojnowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Davina Grojnowski examines Life, the autobiographical text written by ancient Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, from a literary studies perspective and in relation to genre theory. In order to generate a framework of literary practices, Josephus' Life and other texts within Josephus' literary spheres-all associated with autobiography-are the focus of a detailed literary analysis which compares the texts in terms of established features, such as structure, topoi and subject. This methodological examination enables a better understanding of the literary boundaries of autobiography in antiquity and illustrates Josephus' thought-process during the composition of Life. Grojnowski also offers a comparative study of autobiographical practices in Greek and Roman literature, demonstrating the value of passive education supplementing what had been taught actively and its impact on authors and audiences. As a result, she provides insight into the development of literary practices in reaction to various forms of education and subsequently reflects on the religious (self-) views of authors and audiences. Simultaneously, Grojnowski reacts to current discourses on ancient literary genres and demonstrates that ancient autobiography existed as a teachable literary genre in classical literature.

Book In the Court of the Gentiles Narrative Exemplarity and Scriptural Adaptation in the Court Tales of Flavius Josephus

Download or read book In the Court of the Gentiles Narrative Exemplarity and Scriptural Adaptation in the Court Tales of Flavius Josephus written by David Edwards and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwards explores how Josephus in Antiquities adapts the scriptural stories of Joseph and Esther in unexpected ways as models for accounts of more recent Jewish figures. Terming this practice “subversive adaptation,” Edwards contextualizes it within Greco-Roman literary culture and employs the concept of “discourses of exemplarity” to show how Josephus used narratives about past figures to engage Roman elites in moral reflection and pragmatic decision-making. This book supplies analysis of frequently overlooked accounts as well as Josephus’ broader literary strategies, and shows how ancient Jews appropriated imperial historiographical conventions and forms of discourse while countering Greco-Roman claims of cultural superiority.

Book excerpt: Flavius Josephus is without a doubt the most important witness to ancient Judaism from the close of the biblical period to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple in A.D. 70. His four surviving works - Judean War, Judean Antiquities, Life, and Against Apion - provide the narrative structure for interpreting the other, more fragmentary written sources and physical remains from this period. This is the first comprehensive literary-historical commentary on the works of Flavius Josephus in English. Steve Mason, York University, Toronto, edits the scheduled 10 volumes.

Book excerpt: Josephus was a first-century Pharisee, soldier, informant to the Romans, and writer. He left behind the most extensive writings on ancient Jewish history still in existence, including the earliest independent accounts of the lives of Jesus, John the Baptist, and James the brother of Jesus. Without Josephus, we would know very little about the Essenes, the ancient Jewish group most frequently associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls, or about the beliefs of the Sadducees and Pharisees. Features include: The War of the Jews: an account of the Jewish revolt against Rome up to the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem -- The Antiquities of the Jews: a history of the Jews from Creation to the Roman occupation of Palestine -- The Life of Flavius Josephus: the autobiography of Josephus, who fought against Rome and later served the empire -- Against Apion: a defense of the origin of Judaism in the face of Greco-Roman slanders -- Discourse to the Greeks Concerning Hades: a text attributed to Josephus -- Index of parallels between Josephus's Antiquities and the Old Testament including the Apocrypha.

Book excerpt: Titus Flavius Josephus (37 - circa 100) was a 1st-century Roman-Jewish historian and hagiographer of priestly and royal ancestry who recorded Jewish history, with special emphasis on the 1st century AD and the First Jewish-Roman War which resulted in the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. He has been credited by many as recording some of the earliest history of Jesus Christ outside of the gospels, this being an item of contention among historians. Josephus was a law-observant Jew who believed in the compatibility of Judaism and Graeco-Roman thought, commonly referred to as Hellenistic Judaism. His most important works were The Jewish War (c. 75 AD) and Antiquities of the Jews (c. 94 AD). Josephus also wrote an autobiography of his life, which was so distinguished that the Romans awarded him citizenship.

Book excerpt: Annotation "Within the writings of Flavius Josephus his shortest work, the autobiographical Life, has often seemed the simplest to understand as a defensive response to Josephus's rival Justus of Tiberias. Refocusing our attention from the personal character and motives of Josephus to the work itself, Steve Mason brings this crucial narrative to life in new historical and literary contexts. He shows that it is a carefully structured appendix to Josephus's magnum opus, the Judean Antiquities, and that Josephus uses it to unashamedly celebrate his character according to the values and standards of his time."

Book The Life of Flavius Josephus Against Apion and an Extract Concerning Hades

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within this collection of Josephus' shorter works, the life and thoughts of this first-century Jewish historian and Roman citizen unfold in an informative, methodical way. The autobiography, "The Life," is a text originally thought to have been an appendix to his most well-known work, "Antiquities of the Jews," for Josephus felt the need to justify his cooperation with the Romans as a Jew just after the First Jewish-Roman War. In the two-volume "Against Apion," Josephus defends Judaism as both an ancient religion and a philosophy, particularly in contrast to the more recent customs of the Greeks, or Greco-Romans. He addresses both negative contentions by the Greek writer Apion and myths of Manetho. Finally, Josephus' "Discourse to the Greeks" includes his thoughts on the afterlife in opposition to the prevailing Greek views of his day. An insightful and observant writer, Josephus's unique position as a Jew in the Roman world of the first century provides a surprising perspective to a time generally studied through the lens of Christianity.
