Book Cooperative Game Theory and Its Application to Natural Environmental and Water Resource Issues 2 Application to Natural and Environmental Resources

Download or read book Cooperative Game Theory and Its Application to Natural Environmental and Water Resource Issues 2 Application to Natural and Environmental Resources written by Stefano Zara, Fioravante Patrone, Ariel Dinar and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper provides a review of various applications of cooperative game theory (CGT) to issues of natural and environmental resources. With an increase in the level of competition over environmental and natural resources, the incidents of disputes have been at the center of allocation agreements. The paper reviews the cases of common pool resources such as fisheries and forests, and cases of environmental pollution such as acid rain, flow, and stock pollution. In addition to providing examples of cooperative solutions to allocation problems, the conclusion from this review suggests that cooperation over scarce environmental and natural resources is possible under a variety of physical conditions and institutional arrangements. CGT applications to international fishery disputes are especially useful in that they have been making headway in policy-related agreements among states and regions of the world. Forest applications are more local in nature, but of great relevance in solving disputes among communities and various levels of governments.

Book The Irrational Economist

Download or read book The Irrational Economist written by Erwann Michel-Kerjan and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the twenty most costly catastrophes since 1970, more than half have occurred since 2001. Is this an omen of what the 21st century will be? How might we behave in this new, uncertain and more dangerous environment? Will our actions be rational or irrational? A select group of scholars, innovators, and Nobel Laureates was asked to address challenges to rational decision making both in our day-to-day life and in the face of catastrophic threats such as climate changes, natural disasters, technological hazards, and human malevolence. At the crossroads of decision sciences, behavioral and neuro-economics, psychology, management, insurance, and finance, their contributions aim to introduce readers to the latest thinking and discoveries. The Irrational Economist challenges the conventional wisdom about how to make the right decisions in the new era we have entered. It reveals a profound revolution in thinking as understood by some of the greatest minds in our day, and underscores the growing role and impact of economists and other social scientists as they guide our most important personal and societal decisions.

Book Frameworks for Policy Analysis

Download or read book Frameworks for Policy Analysis written by Raul P. Lejano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frameworks for Policy Analysis argues that, in order to bring relevance back to policy analysis, we need to approach policy situations as complex phenomena and employ multiple ways of looking at things in order to understand the essential elements of each policy case. The book is an exploration of distinct, sometimes radically different, models for analysis, but it is also a reference for these multiple methodologies that all come under the term "analysis." Along with classic and recent models, the book introduces some new concepts that serve to deepen our analysis and aspire to what Geertz calls "thick description." This text, written for advanced courses in policy analysis, is an answer to the critical gap between the complexity and dimensionality of policy situations and the abstract and formal character of policy analysis, in general. The book begins by introducing the reader to dominant models of analysis, pointing out their limitations and the potential for transcending these limits. It also introduces new analytical approaches that help to merge text and context, increasing the dimensionality and authenticity of the analysis.

Book Society and Its Environment

Download or read book Society and Its Environment written by Egbert Tellegen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998.People cannot live without changing nature. They do so by breathing, feeding and defecating, by dressing and heating and by creating barriers against wind and water, cold and heat. These forms of human-induced change of nature have been present since the dawn of mankind. People are constantly confronted by a malignant nature against which they have to defend themselves and whose resources they have to use in order to survive. However, the relationship between man and nature has dramatically changed during the past centuries. More than the word 'nature', the term 'environment' has become strongly associated with damage and decay caused by human beings. Hence, in practice 'environment' is mostly associated with problems. In this book the term 'environment' does not describe different 'environments' and the way they are changed by human activities in general, but focuses on those human-induced of it. What are the causes of these changes, when and where are these changes considered as environmental problems and how do people react to these changes are the main questions of this book. One of the possible reactions to environmental problems is the efforts to solve them. The ways in which individual citizens, private enterprises, public authorities, environmental organizations and others try to solve environmental problems is a main topic of this book.
