Jain is a comprehensive assessment of the housing situationin India which not only traces the path taken by (governments so far but alsooutlines a roadmap for the future. The book begins with an overview of thehousing scenario in India. It discusses various housing programmes and draws adistinction between affordable housing and adequate housing. The book alsodraws particular attention to housing issues of special groups such as theelderly, disabled, homeless, migrant and transit workers, students and singlewomen. There is also a discussion on the issue of social and physicalinfrastructure. The book notes that housing units alone do not constitutehousing but infrastructure plays a critical role in the occupancy of housing. The question of reducing the cost of housing has been vexatious for long. Jaindeals with this issue in detail and suggests various low-cost technologies andhouse building systems for making housing more affordable. Another issue isthat of rental housing. Jain suggests that giving a boost to rental housingthrough a slew of measures can go a long way in making housing more accessibleand bring vacant housing into the market.

Book Payment schemes for forest ecosystem services in China

Download or read book Payment schemes for forest ecosystem services in China written by J.F. Liang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with intensified ecological crisis, the Chinese government has sought policy interventions to reverse its forest degradation. Among the policy instruments is the Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) that aims to transform the pattern of traditional forest management and protection and to encourage forest sustainable use by financial incentive. This book provides a policy evaluation on the payment schemes for forest ecosystem services in China. It examines PES schemes with respect to ecological effectiveness, economic and livelihood impacts, participation of local people, and the interlinkages with forest tenure reform. The evaluation is based on different cases across China's main forested regions. The implementation of payment schemes in China shows improvements in forest management and protection and an incentive-based governance method is employed instead of 'command and control'. New forest use practices are also created to couple local livelihood requirements with ecological conservation. In addition, local farmers are more and more involved in the implementation of payment schemes. Providing a comprehensive assessment of payment policies for ecosystem services in China, this book will be of great interest to policy-makers and government advisers in China, international donor agencies, and academics and students with an interest in PES and forest governance.

Download or read book Refugia written by Robin Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an unusual book. Combining social science fiction, utopianism, pragmatism, sober analysis and innovative social theory, the authors address one of the biggest dilemmas of our age – how to solve the problems arising from mass displacement. As early versions of the solution proposed by Robin Cohen and Nicholas Van Hear filtered out, their vision of a new, networked, transnational archipelago, called Refugia, was immediately denounced or met with scepticism by established refugee scholars. Others were more intrigued, more open-minded, or perhaps just holding their fire until this book was finally published. As it at least has the virtue of originality, why not judge the proposal for yourself? Read it and craft your own critique. The authors have initiated an openly pro-refugee vision that all can help to shape. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to scholars, students, practitioners and an informed public ready to engage with this pressing issue.

Book Politics as Usual

Download or read book Politics as Usual written by Michael Margolis and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyberspace is no longer a mystery. It has become irrevocably intertwined with everyday life, facilitating everything from reading the news and paying the bills to ordering birthday presents. We are in the midst of a revolution in mass communication, and there now exists the technology for creating new forms of community, empowering citizens, and challenging existing power structures. But will such changes occur? In this fascinating book Michael Margolis and David Resnick ponder the effects of cyberspace on American Politics. Our political system tends to normalize political activity, and thus, the Internet′s vast potential could be lost, rendering it just another purveyor of ignored information. This broad examination begins with a history of cyberspace and moves through discussions of parties, political interest groups, candidates, mass media, information dissemination, and commercial uses of the Internet. Politics as Usual offers an innovative and exciting look into previously ignored aspects of the Internet and American politics.
