Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landfill is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organised waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world. Landfills may include internal waste disposal sites as well as sites used by many producers. Many landfills are also used for other waste management purposes, such as the temporary storage, consolidation and transfer, or processing of waste material (sorting, treatment, or recycling). A landfill also may refer to ground that has been filled in with soil and rocks instead of waste materials, so that it can be used for a specific purpose, such as for building houses. Unless they are stabilised, these areas may experience severe shaking or liquefaction of the ground in a large earthquake. This book presents new research in a field which is demanding and beginning to receive society's attention.

Book Global Approaches to Site Contamination Law

Download or read book Global Approaches to Site Contamination Law written by Elizabeth Brandon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the complex and variable laws addressing site contamination, reviewing existing international, regional and national law of relevance to site contamination. It also offers detailed case studies of national approaches to the issue, and goes on to explore avenues for promoting the development of comprehensive domestic laws on site contamination, with a focus on the role of international law and actors. A detailed discussion analyzes such variations as a binding international legal instrument, a non-binding instrument, and a model framework for site contamination management. The text includes recommendations regarding the key elements needed for regulating site contamination at the national level. The author also offers an appropriate and feasible timetable for international action to promote better national law and policy regarding contaminated sites.

Book Base Realignment and Closure Cleanup Plan

Download or read book Base Realignment and Closure Cleanup Plan written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Cleanup Plan (BCP) describes the status, management and response strategy, and action items related to Cameron Station's ongoing environmental restoration and associated compliance programs. These programs support full - restoration of the installation property, which is necessary to meet the requirements for property disposal and reuse activities associated with the closure of the installation. The scope of the BCP considers the following regulatory mechanisms: the BRAC Act; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) as amended by the Community Environmental Response Facilitation Act (CERFA); Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA); and other applicable laws. The Cameron Station BCP is a dynamic planning document which was developed by a BRAC Cleanup Team (BCT) consisting of U.S. Army, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III (USEPA), and State of Virginia Department 9f Environmental Quality (VDEQ) representatives. It was necessary to make certain assumptions and interpretations to develop the schedule and cost estimates provided in this plan. The BCP will be updated regularly to reflect the current status and strategies of remedial actions, compliance programs and disposal and reuse planning. This document is the second in a series of updates/modifications and represents conditions and strategies as of January 1995.

Book The Design Implementation and Audit of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

Download or read book The Design Implementation and Audit of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems written by Ron C. McKinnon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the design, implementation, and auditing of structured occupational health and safety management systems (SMS), sometimes referred to as safety programs. Every workplace has a form of SMS in place as required by safety regulations and laws. The Design, Implementation, and Audit of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems describes some of the elements that constitute an SMS, the implementation process, and the auditing of the conformance to standards. It covers more than 60 processes, programs, or standards of a system, and gives important background information on each element. Guidelines and examples show how to design and implement the risk-based processes, programs and standards, and how to audit them against standards. The text is based on actual SMS implementation experiences across a wide range of industries. It offers a roadmap to any organization which has no structured SMS. It will guide them through the process of upgrading their health and safety processes to conform to local and international standards. It will lead them away from relying on reactive safety measures such as injury rates, to proactive actions which are measured by the audit of the system. Features Covers more than 60 elements of a safety management system (SMS) Provides practical examples of how to design, implement, and audit a structured SMS Based on actual SMS implementation experience across a wide range of industries Presents the integration of an SMS into the day-to-day functions of the organization
