Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1954 and 1962, Algerian women played a major role in the struggle to end French rule in one of the twentieth century’s most violent wars of decolonisation. This is the first in-depth exploration of what happened to these women after independence in 1962. Based on new oral history interviews with women who participated in the war in a wide range of roles, from urban bombers to members of the rural guerrilla support network, it explores how female veterans viewed the post-independence state and its multiple discourses on ‘the Algerian woman’ in the fifty years following 1962. It also examines how these former combatants’ memories of the anti-colonial conflict intertwine with, contradict or coexist alongside the state-sponsored narrative of the war constructed after independence. Making an original contribution to debates about gender, nationalism and memory, this book will appeal to students and scholars of history and politics.

Book The Sister Knot Why We Fight Why We re Jealous and Why We ll Love Each Other No Matter What

Download or read book The Sister Knot Why We Fight Why We re Jealous and Why We ll Love Each Other No Matter What written by Terri Apter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The best book on sisters, very important and beautifully written.”—Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice This “substantial contribution to the literature on sibling relationships” (Library Journal) explores the intricacy, friction, and love in bonds between sisters. Relationships between women are often freighted with a rocky mix of emotions—devotion and disregard, affection and loathing, admiration and envy—leading to anguish and confusion on the playground, in the home, and in the boardroom. Negotiating her layered feelings toward a sister shapes a woman’s psychology as forcefully as do her relationships with her parents. Drawing on compelling interviews and new research, Terri Apter considers the many aspects of the sister relationship from birth through adulthood. The need to fight to differentiate oneself from a sister, as well the protectiveness one feels for that same person, is explained by reference to extensive psychological and biological evidence.

Book Farming Fighting and Family

Download or read book Farming Fighting and Family written by Miranda McCormick and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farmer, author and broadcaster Arthur (A.G.) Street was one of the leading voices of British agriculture during the Second World War. His daughter Pamela – herself an aspiring writer – was 18 when war broke out. David, her future husband, served with the 4th RHA in North Africa. Using their previously unpublished diaries and letters, Miranda McCormick – Pamela's daughter – tells the candid story of a Wiltshire family living and working at a time when 'a little German with a black paint-brush moustache turned [the] world upside down'. Their very different experiences of war are woven into one masterful narrative of love, duty and separation during a time of national adversity. Detailing the sudden rise of her tenant farmer father to the status of a national celebrity, Pamela's service as a VAD nurse and in the ATS, as well as her unofficial fiancé's detainment in German and Italian prison camps, this is a story told with an almost allegorical simplicity. Intimate and personal, this vivid account of 'ordinary life' during extraordinary times is also the chronicle of a generation for whom farming was the fourth line of defence.
