Book excerpt: El 11 de julio de 2012 el Congreso colombiano expidió la Ley 1562 que modificó el Sistema General de Riesgos Profesionales y dictó algunas normas en salud ocupacional. La nueva ley cambió la denominación de los riesgos para estar en concordancia con lo establecido por el Convenio 187 de 2006 de la OIT y, además, modificó el término de prescripción de las prestaciones económicas del Sistema, amplió la definición de accidente de trabajo, mejoró el concepto y aplicación de la relación de causalidad de las enfermedades laborales, amplió los grupos de trabajadores afiliados al Sistema, tanto en forma obligatoria como voluntaria, y los objetivos del Fondo de Riesgos Laborales, entre otras innovaciones. Esta obra tiene como objetivo analizar la reforma al Sistema General de Riesgos Laborales, con el fin de que su conocimiento reduzca la ocurrencia de riesgos del trabajo en Colombia y surja una cultura de prevención que disminuya la tasa de accidentabilidad y de morbilidad en el empleo.

Entonces se dio autorización para que el sector privado participara en el aseguramiento de los riesgos derivados del trabajo, dando continuidad a los progresos que presentaba el Instituto de Seguros Sociales (rss) en materia de aseguramiento de dichos riesgos, por lo que a esta institución se sumó un importante número de aseguradores privados. Por otra parte, los sectores productivos, empleadores y trabajadores les han otorgado mayor importancia a la prevención y al aseguramiento frente a las posibles contingencias que se pueden presentar en el desarrollo del trabajo, que no solo afectan al individuo que las padece, sino la marcha y la productividad de las organizaciones empresariales.
