Book excerpt: Like a lot of women, blogger Osheta Moore loved the idea of shalom: God’s dream for a world that is whole, vibrant, and flourishing. But honestly: who's got the time? So one night she whispered a dangerous prayer: God, show me the things that make for peace… In Shalom Sistas, Moore shares what she learned when she challenged herself to study peace in the Bible for forty days. Taking readers through the twelve points of the Shalom Sistas’ Manifesto, Moore experiments with practices of everyday peacemaking and invites readers to do the same. From dropping “love bombs” on a family vacation, to talking to the coach who called her son the n-word, to spreading shalom with a Swiffer, Moore offers bold steps for crossing lines between black and white, suburban and urban, rich and poor. What if a bunch of Jesus-following women catch a vision of a vibrant, whole, flourishing world? What happens when Shalom Sistas unite? Free downloadable study guide available here.

Book The Sistas of Hooverville County

Download or read book The Sistas of Hooverville County written by Sherry Moss Walraven and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sista's of Hooverville County have been playing tricks and pranks on people for as long as they were able to walk. Their cousins Jake and Joe, who was the boys of the Sheriff in town, helped the girls in some of their pranks. Their parents knew what they did, and was punished, if needed. The girls grew up in this book from Kindergarten to adulthood. They still loved to have fun. Most of the people in the County knew the girls and decided if no one was harmed or killed, then they were okay with the girls' fun. Even when they were married, they made their wedding a fun activity. They gave up their activities when they grew up to be adults. Their best trick was in church when their frog jumped up on the head of a Deacon, but that was when they were much younger. Join the kids while they grow up and make good men and women. The parents often laughed and had fun themselves, but not to the measure the kids did. Everything was going well until one of the girls were taken by some mean men. Then all pranks were off. They come from a strong family who help each other when the times got rough.

Book The Adventures of the Soul Sistas

Download or read book The Adventures of the Soul Sistas written by Newton Vanriel and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charm and Dawn are soul sistas from the heart. They share everything and have the best adventures on their Spirit family farm. When their parents, Alexandra and Nathan, adopted them from birth—first Charm, then Dawn—the two girls were by each other’s sides from day one. But living in a rural town, not everyone saw the true beauty of the Spirit family. Polite but distant, the town was wary of a Black family with two diverse daughters—one Black and one white. Charm and Dawn, though, knew that this was really a superpower, and they created their own world to show others how great it is to be part of the soul sista’s dynamics. The Adventures of the Soul Sistas celebrates diversity and the true meaning of family through the eyes of two wonderful superheroes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dawn and Charm, the “twin” Soul Sistas, are embarking on a new adventure: going to school. But why? the twins lament to their parents. They don’t understand why they can’t just stay on the Spirit family’s beloved farm and play with the animals. Together, the twin sisters have everything they need in each other, even their own song and backwards language. Despite their parents’ encouragement, the girls are not sold on going to school, especially after meeting Mrs. Osa. The principal of Sylvia Public School, who reminds the girls of a bear, decides to separate the twins, putting them into different classes. It’s a learning experience of a different kind for Charm and Dawn, who each find their own place, following their interests while making new friends with “the boyz,” two adoptive brothers who move in next door and go to the same school. The Soul Sistas Go to School! (Too Cool for School?) is the second book in a series, following the author’s debut, The Adventures of the Soul Sistas. The children’s book has earned community accolades such as the Literary Titan Award in the children’s book category, and the City of Pickering Cultural Diversity Award. It has also been adapted into a play at a local theatre.

  • Publisher : FriesenPress

  • ISBN : 1770673784

Book excerpt: A pair of novellas about friendship and endurance in the face of hardship. In the titular story, Johnson introduces an unlikely pair of friends: Joanna White, a white Canadian journalist struggling to overcome the breakup of her long-term relationship, and Henrietha Browne, a Jamaican woman who has seen her share of troubles. Henrietha relates her history of oppression and abuse as well as her quest to find autonomy in a world beset with racism, sexism and poverty. In the process, Joanna comes to a deeper understanding of her own oppression and how her identity, while playing a role in both her successes and failures, is more of a bridge than a barrier to her communion with women of all races and backgrounds. Waiting for the World to Change, a smaller novella, follows a similar structure as black, Canadian, criminal, lawyer, Susan Ottawa leads the defense team in a high profile murder case while drawing strength from her 'jural god' Johnny Cochrane and who seeks counsel with Jamaican housekeeper Anita Kingsley. As they share their feelings about men, religion and racism, Susan sees her life in a new light and slowly opens her heart to Anita's brand of optimistic spirituality. The mirrored structures of both novellas tie them together.

Book Hip Hop s Li l Sistas Speak

Download or read book Hip Hop s Li l Sistas Speak written by Bettina L. Love and published by Counterpoints. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has received the AESA (American Educational Studies Association) Critics Choice Award 2013. Through ethnographically informed interviews and observations conducted with six Black middle and high school girls, Hip Hop's Li'l Sistas Speak explores how young women navigate the space of Hip Hop music and culture to form ideas concerning race, body, class, inequality, and privilege. The thriving atmosphere of Atlanta, Georgia serves as the background against which these youth consume Hip Hop, and the book examines how the city's socially conservative politics, urban gentrification, race relations, Southern-flavored Hip Hop music and culture, and booming adult entertainment industry rest in their periphery. Intertwined within the girls' exploration of Hip Hop and coming of age in Atlanta, the author shares her love for the culture, struggles of being a queer educator and a Black lesbian living and researching in the South, and reimagining Hip Hop pedagogy for urban learners.

Book Loyal Sisters

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Loyal Sisters written by Doreen W. McCalla and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Loyal Sisters is about Loyal Sisters it is not only for them. From ethnographic exploration into mainly two churches: Messa Pentecostal and High Parish, the religiosity and faith in the Triune God, through the Holy Spirit (pneumatology), of Loyal Sisters is realized. They are faithful and avid ecclesiastical worshipers amidst a tide of dwindling church-attendance. We can reflect on their faith-lifestyle and ontological passion for God which propels them into action in the British church. We discover their values and beliefs and how they transcend and redeem adversity and/or immigration, patriarchy, and racism, “come what may,” and seek for womanist, cultural, and religious change in the church through the Spirit. Furthermore, this book provides an insight into my autobiography/womanist testimonies as a British, Black, female practicing, ecumenical Christian who is an ally with Loyal Sisters. You do not have to be a Loyal Sister or identify as female of color to read this book. There is much we can learn from Loyal Sisters and about the British church which can enrich our understanding, epistemology, and/or spirituality as faith-believers or persons of no religious faith: whether we agree with all, some or none of their womanist spirituality.
