Book excerpt: A bold dive into the problematic development (and developers) of "smart wives"--feminized digital assistants who are friendly, sometimes flirty, docile, efficient, occasionally glitchy, and perpetually available. Meet the Smart Wife--at your service, an eclectic collection of feminized AI, robotic, and smart devices. This digital assistant is friendly and sometimes flirty, docile and efficient, occasionally glitchy but perpetually available. She might go by Siri, or Alexa, or inhabit Google Home. She can keep us company, order groceries, vacuum the floor, turn out the lights. A Japanese digital voice assistant--a virtual anime hologram named Hikari Azuma--sends her "master" helpful messages during the day; an American sexbot named Roxxxy takes on other kinds of household chores. In The Smart Wife, Yolande Strengers and Jenny Kennedy examine the emergence of digital devices that carry out "wifework"--domestic responsibilities that have traditionally fallen to (human) wives. They show that the principal prototype for these virtual helpers--designed in male-dominated industries--is the 1950s housewife: white, middle class, heteronormative, and nurturing, with a spick-and-span home. It's time, they say, to give the Smart Wife a reboot.

Book The Role of Smart Technologies in Decision Making

Download or read book The Role of Smart Technologies in Decision Making written by Eleonora Pantano and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-20 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book examines the impact of smart technologies in consumer's behaviour from a contemporary perspective, blending marketing and retailing along with other disciplines such as psychology, media studies and sociology. Market forces and technological advancements are making the management of and strategies for innovation more prominent and essential in all functions of business, not least marketing and retailing. Frontiers of marketing are constantly pushed, requiring the development and adjustments of new theories. Prior literature on innovation in marketing has mainly focused on digital marketing strategies and consumer behaviour, while only recently introducing the notion of smart retailing in terms of smart experience and interaction. While these studies provide a basis for defining smart retailing and consumer behaviour in smart retail settings, the concept of smart consumers is still under-investigated. Thus, the smart consumer — consumers making extensive use of smart technologies in all steps of their shopping behaviour and experience of the store (both offline and online) — is emerging as a promising area for future marketing and retailing studies. The chapters in this edited volume seek to understand the effect of innovation in consumer behaviour by proposing original empirical and theoretical contributions, methods, models, tools and case studies that contribute to explain this emergent phenomenon. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Marketing Management.

Book Ethics and Sustainability in Digital Cultures

Download or read book Ethics and Sustainability in Digital Cultures written by Thomas Taro Lennerfors and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital technologies, now ubiquitous around the world, can promote positive values, as well as support those that are less socially acceptable. To better understand such technologies’ impact on ethics and sustainability, this book situates digital technologies within a cultural context, arguing that the technology is received differently in different cultural contexts. The book contains chapters on state-of-the-art digital technologies such as artificial intelligence from various countries including Japan and Sweden to highlight the multifarious ways in how ethical and sustainability issues are being manifested in certain cultural contexts. The book contributes to furthering understandings on the similarities and differences between digital technology implementations in different cultures, promoting a cross-cultural dialogue on desired values and how they are promoted or downplayed by such technologies. The book is divided into two parts: the former focuses on how individuals relate to new digital technologies, and the latter focuses on those who develop digital technologies. The book targets scholars, businesspeople and policymakers interested in the interconnection between digital technologies, ethics and sustainability from various cultural viewpoints. It provides new case studies on a range of digital technologies and discussions about digital technology implementations in cultural contexts.

Book excerpt: #1 New Release, #10 Ranking after 6 months! The Kindle edition is free when you purchase the paperback edition. Seamlessly switch between Audible and Kindle editions with Whispersync. The idea of a smart home includes a wide variety of emerging technologies. Examples include voice-controlled digital assistants, robots, smart thermostats and blinds, and unifying platforms like SmartThings and IFTTT ("if this, then that"). In my home, I incorporated a combination of these things. Some overlap. The technology is futuristic and, frankly, cool; but it required me to change the way I interacted with the world around me. Once my smart home was set up the way I wanted, I had to be mindful that it was there to help me - albeit not necessarily on my terms. I had to learn how to interact with my digital assistants. That journey is still unfolding, and I expect my smart home to keep expanding and improving as more things are added. This book started simply as the notes that my wife kept during our recent personal experiences with selecting and setting up smart home devices after we built a new house. While whole-home solutions like HomeSeer or SmartThings are available in the market, we selected what we felt was the best product for each task, and made sure they would all integrate with our existing home. (In the interest of full disclosure, references to "me" or "our" attribute more credit to me than is due. She was the driving force and brains behind the whole endeavor!) While researching our project, we read a plethora of reviews from folks like us (real people, that is). Some admittedly were more insightful than others, but we gained valuable insights into what to avoid, what questions to ask, etc. and we found some great ideas. If you are a DIY type, or just want a general idea of what is going on with smart homes, this book will show you a bit of what is possible. By the end of this book, indeed, I hope that you will be comfortable in the Internet of Things (or "IoT") world of connected devices, digital assistants, skills or IFTTT applets. When you look at the table of contents, it answers the question of what a smart home can do for you. I also tried to organize it in such a way that you can quickly find what you're looking for.- Learn smart home terminology and what really matters when buying equipment. - Select good equipment and plan for future growth.- Set up and connect everything.- Maintain your smart home.Ntags: alexa, smart home, smart house, smart sensors, amazon echo, home automation, connected things, echo, echo dot, echo show, home security, insteon, smart home technology, siri, google assistant, digital assistant, personal assistant, bixby, cortana, ifttt, smartapps, smart things, smartthings, smart devices, smart speakers, smart cities, internet of things, iot, smart locks, samsung artik, artik, alexa skills, home security, qubino, yunomi
