Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir William Macdonald (1831-1917) is the father of the Canadian tobacco industry and one of the country's foremost educational philanthropists. His contributions to McGill University transformed it into one of the world's foremost research and teaching institutions. William Fong's biography places Macdonald's life in its historical context, painting a vivid portrait of Victorian Canada." "Born into a prominent Scottish family on Prince Edward Island, Macdonald rejected his Catholic upbringing and left home when he was eighteen. After three years in Boston as a bookkeeper he headed to Montreal and began to work as a commission agent. By 1868 Macdonald had become the leading manufacturer of chewing tobacco in Canada, and by 1885 he may have been the richest person in the country." "Macdonald turned to philanthropy when he was in his fifties; his endowments to institutions from Prince Edward Island to British Columbia made professionalism and practical education central to Canadian life. Fong describes in particular how McGill University evolved, largely through Macdonald's financial contributions, from an impoverished institution into an intellectual powerhouse. Most famously, he financed the research that led to Ernest Rutherford's Nobel Prize and to the start of the atomic age. Sir William Macdonald offers the first detailed look at the development of engineering, physics, and law at McGill."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book The True Intrepid

Download or read book The True Intrepid written by Bill MacDonald and published by Raincoast Books. This book was released on 2001 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second World War intelligence exploits of William Stephenson-the mysterious man known simply as "Intrepid" who is said to be the real-life model for Ian Fleming's James Bond-were celebrated in his lifetime in espionage lore the world over. As head of the British Security Coordination, a predecessor of the CIA, Stephenson was responsible for the hugely successful covert political war against all sources of Axis strength. Subsequently, though, some observers questioned certain aspects of Stephenson's career. In this fascinating re-examination of the historical record, Bill Macdonald documents Stephenson's clouded early life and unravels the tangled strings of information that run through secret papers and previous books to reveal the astonishing details of the man who said: "Nothing deceives like a document."A revised paperback reprint of a Maclean's magazine bestseller, The True Intrepid features historical photographs, personal interviews with those who worked with Stephenson, and a foreword by the CIA's staff historian and former CIA staff officer, Thomas F. Troy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutual accommodation is about co-operation, compromise, and inclusion. It's a big idea, equal to freedom, science, and compassion. The postwar global economic order led by the United States is one of the greatest historic achievements of mutual accommodation, yet it is now at risk from the centrifugal forces that have led to populism. Today, to many nations and people, Canada is the model country driven by successful mutual accommodation. In Might Nature Be Canadian? William Macdonald explores the theme of mutual accommodation with a close lens on the Canadian experience. Canada has a drive toward mutual accommodation. The United States has a strong drive toward division. There has always been a divergence of ideologies between the two countries. The United States now appears to view the world as a never-ending struggle, which has become greater since 2000, between good and evil, while Canada, by contrast, leans toward the idea that there is an underlying order at the heart of things. Canada has always faced strong limits in creatively overcoming a challenging geography and French/English language differences within its own borders; on the other hand the United States sees itself as a country with virtually no limits. Throughout its history Canada's drive toward mutual accommodation, stronger than that of any other country, has allowed its increasingly diverse citizens to live together peacefully and successfully, even as they retain their own culture, language, and religion. Nature can be described as simultaneously either/or and both/and. Is there something fundamentally Canadian about this? Taking inspiration from British philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, who said that "civilization is the triumph of persuasion over force," Macdonald argues that the urgent spread of mutual accommodation, a charge led by Canada, is central to achieving a bearable world for everyone.

Book excerpt: Macdonald Institute traces the evolution of a small post-secondary institution specializing in the education of rural Ontario women into a world-respected, co-educational college at the University of Guelph. Built in 1903 with funds from Sir William Macdonald of Montreal, Macdonald Institute focused originally on the teaching of Domestic Science to rural women. "Mac" has evolved to meet the changing needs of women, the Canadian family and society in general. The Institute evolved into the College of Family and Consumer Studies in 1970 and its legacy is now an integral part of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences. This book provides valuable insights into the education of women in Ontario in the twentieth century.
