Download or read book Cardinal written by Louise Milligan and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018 Cardinal George Pell, Australia’s most powerful Catholic, was found guilty of five sexual crimes against children and sentenced to six years’ jail. He was the most senior Catholic figure in the world to be charged by police and convicted of child sex offences. George Pell was a Ballarat boy who studied at Oxford and rose through the Catholic Church ranks to become adviser to Pope Francis and Vatican treasurer. He was expelled from the Pope’s inner circle. As an outspoken defender of Church orthodoxy, supported and championed by the powerful, Pell’s ascendancy was seemingly unstoppable. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse brought to light horrific stories about abuse of the most vulnerable. Pell portrayed himself as the first man in the Catholic Church to tackle the problem. But questions about what the Cardinal knew, and when, persisted. Louise Milligan pieces together decades of disturbing activities highlighting Pell’s actions and cover-ups. The book is a testament to the most intimate stories of complainants. Many people entrusted their secrets to be told here for the first time. Multi-award winning Cardinal reveals uncomfortable truths about a culture of entitlement, abuse of trust and how ambition can silence evil.
Download or read book The High Court the Constitution and Australian Politics written by Rosalind Dixon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Court, the Constitution and Australian Politics is an in-depth exploration of the relationship between decisions of the High Court and broader political currents in Australia. It begins with an investigation of the patterns and effects of constitutional invalidation and dissent on the High Court over time, and their correlation with political trends and attitudes. It also examines the role of constitutional amendment in expressing popular constitutional understandings in the Australian system. Subsequent chapters focus on the eras marked by the tenure of the Court's 12 Chief Justices, examining Court's decisions in the context of the prevailing political conditions and understandings of each. Together, the chapters canvass a rich variety of accounts of the relationship between constitutional law and politics in Australia, and of how this relationship is affected by factors such as the process of appointment for High Court judges and the Court's explicit willingness to consider political and community values.

Download or read book Mostly Guilty written by Michael Challinger and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book for the general reader rather than lawyers, this often tongue-in-cheek account of Michael Challinger's interactions with the criminals he defends gives a first-hand account of the quirky nature of human beings. Mostly Guilty deals with the workings of the lowest level of the Australian legal system. It's about the down-to-earth cases that happen daily in Magistrates' Courts. It does so through the experiences and anecdotes of a low-flying criminal barrister. While the cases are from Victoria, the book makes reference to other states and has relevance and interest Australia-wide. The style is light, punchy and informal, with lots of direct speech and many funny yarns. Some of the book is tongue-in-cheek (and even politically incorrect) but it also makes serious points throughout. It's entertaining as well as informative. The chapters are short, and generally deal with specific offences (shop theft, for example) or areas of law (bail). Others recount particular cases in an ironic or colourful way. Most cases are of low to medium criminality so the light-hearted tone is not inappropriate. Most legal memoirs are by big-shot advocates or retired judges. Mostly Guilty is different, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
Download or read book Judging Democracy written by Haig Patapan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-31 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Court is taking an increasingly important role in shaping the contours of democracy in Australia. In deciding fundamental democratic questions, does the Court pursue a consistent and overarching democratic vision? Or are its decisions essentially constrained by institutional and practical limitations? Judging Democracy, first published in 2000, addresses this question by examining the Court's recent decisions on human rights, citizenship, native title and separation of powers. It represents the first major political and legal examination of the Court's new jurisprudence and the way it is influencing democracy and the institutions of governance in Australia. A foreword to the book has been written by the former Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir Anthony Mason.
