Book excerpt: Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) was one of the last of the great Gothic Revival architects, his work concentrating on churches and their contents. He is well-known for his stained glass, his use of colour, and his subtle integration of Classical and Gothic styles. Anthony Symondson, the leading authority on Comper, describes how and why Comper developed his distinctive approach, using early photographs to show Comper's work in its original form. He also charts Comper's friendship with Sir John Betjeman, who championed his work with mixed results. There is a complete gazetteer by Stephen Bucknall, who knew Comper through his family's professional connections, and a reprint of Comper's essay, Of the Atmosphere of a Church . Overall the book gives unique insight into the late flowering of English Gothic Revival church architecture.

Book Scripture and Song in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Scripture and Song in Nineteenth Century Britain written by James Grande and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together new approaches to music history to reveal the interdependence of music and religion in nineteenth-century culture. As composers and performers drew inspiration from the Bible and new historical sciences called into question the historicity of Scripture, controversies raged over the performance, publication and censorship of old and new musical forms. From oratorio to opera, from parlour song to pantomime, and from hymn to broadside, nineteenth-century Britons continually encountered elements of the biblical past in song. Both elite and popular music came to play a significant role in the formation, regulation and contestation of religious and cultural identity and were used to address questions of class, nation and race, leading to the beginnings of ethnomusicology. This richly interdisciplinary volume brings together musicologists, historians, literary and art historians and theologians to reveal points of intersection between music, religion and cultural history.

Book Who Saved Antarctica

  • Author : Andrew Jackson
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-10-04
  • ISBN : 3030784053
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Who Saved Antarctica written by Andrew Jackson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a diplomatic history of a turning point in Antarctic governance: the 1991 adoption of comprehensive environmental protection obligations for an entire continent, which prohibited mining. Solving the mining issue became a symbol of finding diplomatic consensus. The book combines historiographic concepts of contingency, conjuncture and accidental events with theories of structural, entrepreneurial and intellectual leadership. Drawing on archival documents, it shows that Antarctic governance is more adaptive than some imagine, and policy success depends on the interplay of normative practices, serendipitous events, public engagement and influential players able to exploit those circumstances. Ultimately, the events revealed in this book show that the protection of the Antarctic Treaty itself remains as important as protecting the Antarctic environment.

Book Great Australian Dissents

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Lynch
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2016-09-08
  • ISBN : 1108132804
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book Great Australian Dissents written by Andrew Lynch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When judges disagree, those in the minority write a dissenting opinion. This book considers the great dissents in Australian law. Their worth may derive from numerous factors, including their rhetorical force as a piece of legal reasoning or emotive power as a judicial lament for the 'error' into which the majority has fallen; the general importance of the issue at stake; as a challenge to the orthodoxy; and, sometimes, the subsequent recognition of a dissenting opinion's correctness and its ultimate vindication. On some occasions, all these features may be strongly present, on others only some. Through a diverse selection of memorable dissenting opinions, this book illuminates the topic of judicial disagreement more generally - not only through examples of instances when minority opinions have been distinctly valuable, but by drawing out a richer understanding of the attributes and circumstances which lead some dissents to become iconic, while so many lie forgotten.
