Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Isaac Brock Saag brock was born on the little island of Guernsey, in the year 1769, the year in which the great Napoleon and the equally great Wellington were born. The Brock family was an old one, being able to trace its descent from the days of William the Conqueror. It had produced many military and naval heroes, and stories of their daring deeds no doubt thrilled young Isaac Brock, who as a child looked forward to entering the English army. The lads of Guernsey were hardy and daring, and Brock was one of the sturdiest of them. He was a famous boy boxer and was the best swimmer among the lads of his time. He loved reading and delighted in books deal ing with great battles and great soldiers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, K. B The first edition of this Memoir was compiled in a very few weeks, amid other avocations, and while attending the sick bed of my father, who died shortly before its completion; and owing to this want of preparation, as well as to the difficulty of obtaining materials after the lapse or so many years, and at so great a distance from the scene of Sir Isaac Brock's principal labours, I candidly confess that it did not satisfy my own mind. But its publication having happily drawn forth much valuable matter, which in a few years would otherwise have been lost, it will be seen, from a very cursory perusal of this volume, that it is a great improvement on its predecessor, as several errors, topographical and others, arising from the cause just mentioned, have been corrected - many additional letters from Sir Isaac Brock are introduced, while a few others to him of little interest are omitted - and some new and graphic anecdotes and incidents are interwoven in the course of the narrative. Part of the new matter may, however, appear to the general reader as uninteresting and superfluous; but, conceiving that every detail, relating to the progress of a colony from its infant state, possesses a local and statistical value, I have thought such data worthy of being preserved. Book The Story of Isaac Brock

Download or read book The Story of Isaac Brock written by Walter R. Nursey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Isaac Brock: Hero, Defender and Saviour of Upper Canada, 1812 That Isaac Brock is entitled to rank as the foremost defender of the flag Western Canada has ever seen, is a statement which no one familiar with history can deny. Brock fought and won out when the odds were all against him. At a time when almost every British soldier was busy fighting Napoleon in Europe, upon General Brock fell the responsibility of upholding Britain's honour in America. He was "the man behind the gun" - the undismayed man - when the integrity of British America was threatened by a determined enemy. His success can be measured by the fact that it is only since the war of 1812-14 that the British flag has been properly respected in the western hemisphere. It is also a fact that after the capture of Detroit the Union Jack became more firmly rooted in the affections of the Canadian people than ever. It must not be forgotten that the capture of this stronghold was almost as far-reaching in its ultimate effect as the victory of Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham, and was fraught with little, if any, less import to Canada. Book Short Summary of the Life of Major General Sir Isaac Brock Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Summary of the Life of Major General Sir Isaac Brock Classic Reprint written by H. Tupper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Summary of the Life of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock Baltic. Britain determined to make a mighty effort to or capture these fleets and to the A powerful fleet of thirty-three vessels was fitted out. Sir Hyde Parker and Lord Nelson were in command and Colonel Brock was second-in-command of the land forces. But the Danes offered so fierce a resistance that the landing had to be given up, and the infantry remaining on the decks of the vessels were subjected to very severe gun fire to which they could make no reply. At the close of the battle Brock accompanied Captain Freemantle to the Elephant, Nelson's flagship, where he saw the hero write his celebrated letter to the Crown Prince of Denmark. It ran as follows: Lord Nelson has directions to spare Denmark when no longer resisting; but if the firing is continued on the part of Denmark, Lord Nelson will be obliged to set on fire all the floating batteries he has taken without having the power to save the brave Danes who have defended them. Brock may have taken a hint from this famous message. At any rate it closely resembles the message he sent later to General Hull, in Detroit. In the spring of 1802 the 49th Regiment was ordered to make ready to go to Canada. They set sail from England in June, and after weeks of unusually stormy weather for the summer season arrived at Quebec. The vast river St. Lawrence, opening into the heart of the continent, the miles and miles of forest, growing thick to the shores, the strong natural fortress at Quebec, crowned by defences that had experienced four protracted sieges, must have impressed Brock with the vastness of the country to which this was but the gateway. For a short period he remained at the capital of Canada, but the 49th was destined for Upper Canada, now Ontario, and to that wilderness, as he thought it, it was necessary he should go. On his arrival was faced with a problem most trying to any military leader. The monotonous life in the colony was distaste ful to soldiers, -especially to those who were accustomed to the city life and pleasures of the old land, and desertions were common. The men were frequently tempted to take this course by inducements held out to them by citizens of the United States, and, as it was easy at frontier posts for a deserter to slip across the border unobserved, it was needful to keep a close watch on the men. Brock learned that desertion was common in Canada, and at once took the matter in hand in order to prevent such a thing happening in the 49th. He tried, by treating his men with exceptional kindness, to make them content with their lot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Life and Correspondence of Sir Isaac Brock by Ferdinand Brock Tupper Excerpt CHAPTER I. The Guernsey family of BROCK is probably of English origin, but we have been unable to ascertain the period of its first establishment in the island. The parochial register of St. Peter-Port extends only to the year 1563, soon after which time it contains the name of Philip Brock. By "Robson's Armorial Bearings of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland," eight families of the name of Brock appear to bear different arms, one of which was borne by all the Brocks of Guernsey-viz. azure, a fleur de lis or, on a chief argent a lion pass. guard. gu.-crest, an escallop or-until the death of Sir Isaac Brock, when new and honorary armorial bearings were granted by the sovereign to his family. Brock is the ancient Saxon name for badger, and as such is still retained in English dictionaries. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Queenston Heights: Being a Narrative of the Opening of the War of 1812; With Notices of the Life of Major-General Isaac Brock, and Description of the Monument Erected to His Memory But unfortunately the news of the repeal of these orders in Council came too late, and having hastily rushed into war it was difficult for America to recede; indeed subsequent events rendered it highly probable that the American Government of that day had anticipated credit from the commencement of the war, especially from the conquest of Canada, which seems to have been regarded as an easy task. Several acts of hostility occurred between the two powers, attended with various success, but we hasten to the beginning of the campaign against Canada. Nursey Off the coast of Brittany, where the Bay of Biscay fights the white horses of the North Sea, the Island of Guernsey rides at anchor. Its black and yellow, red and purple coast-line, summer and winter, is awash with surf, burying the protecting reefs in a smother of foam. Between these drowned ridges of despair, which warn the toilers of the sea of an intention to engulf them, tongues of ocean pierce the grim chasms of the cliffs. Between this and the sister island of Alderney the teeth of the Casquets cradle the skeleton of many a stout ship, while above the level of the sea the amethyst peaks of Sark rise like phantom bergs. In the sunlight the rainbow-coloured slopes of Le Gouffre jut upwards a jumble of glory. Exposed to the full fury of an Atlantic gale, these islands are well-nigh obliterated in drench. From where the red gables cluster on the heights of Fort George, which overhang the harbour, to the thickets of Jerbourg, valley and plain, at the time we write of, were a gorgeous carpet of anemones, daffodils, primroses and poppies. Download or read book Brock the Hero of Upper Canada Classic Reprint written by Thomas Guthrie Marquis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brock, the Hero of Upper Canada In the public mind General James Wolfe is usually thought of as peculiarly the hero of Canada. But that brave warrior spent only a few months in the country, and during his stay thought merely of driving the French from North America. He took no interest in the country for itself and never dreamt of mak ing Canada his home. Brock, on the other hand, made Canada his country by adoption. For ten years, with but one short holiday to the home land, he had lived within its borders. For a time he had almost complete control of its military aflairs, and was latterly in Upper Can ada both the political and the military leader. As an inspiring force for Canadians his mem ory has greater influence than that of either Wolfe, the conqueror of the French, or Guy Carleton, who saved Canada from the American invaders in 1775 and 1776. He was in many ways the greatest maker of the Canadian nation. On the reverse side of the memorial coin referred to are the words, Success to Com merce and Peace to the World. These are noteworthy words and truly show for what Brock, Nelson, Wellington, Roberts, and all Britain's distinguished soldiers have fought. They were not vulgar conquerors like Napoleon, but drew their swords to help establish the rule of the Prince of Peace on earth. Brock occupies a high place among the world's greatest peacemakers. As a sol dier and statesman his life story is worthy of the closest study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
