Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Bevill In the Third Parliament of Charles the First Bevill Granville sat for Launceston, and upheld his friend Sir John Eliot in defence of the privileges of the House. With sorrow he saw him sent for the first time to the Tower for displeasing the King, and with tears of joy in his eyes welcomed his release - demanded by Parliament - and hastened to join him at Cuddenbeck. The disaster at Rochelle and the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham had stirred the mind of England, though there was more of relief than consternation at the latter event, for the Duke had incurred the bitter hatred of the people. "Thine enemy has fallen, John," said Bevill, "whether by the hand of a lunatic or no matters but little; few, besides the King, will mourn his death, yet as a man he had the merit of courage - but so has a dog for the matter of that," he added. "Nay, friend, his was no dog courage," replied Eliot. "Sure I had scant cause to love him of late years, but it was not mere animal courage that made him wait on that fatal causeway, and bring up the rear at Rochelle, amid the storm of shot and fierce onset of a victorious enemy maddened to vengeance. It was true courage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Making the Modern Reader

Download or read book Making the Modern Reader written by Barbara M. Benedict and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inquiring into the formation of a literary canon during the Restoration and the eighteenth century, Barbara Benedict poses the question, "Do anthologies reflect or shape contemporary literary taste?" She finds that there was a cultural dialectic at work: miscellanies and anthologies transmitted particular tastes while in turn being influenced by the larger culture they helped to create. Benedict reveals how anthologies of the time often created a consensus of literary and aesthetic values by providing a bridge between the tastes of authors, editors, printers, booksellers, and readers. Making the Modern Reader, the first full treatment of the early modern anthology, is in part a history of the London printing trade as well as of the professionalization of criticism. Benedict thoroughly documents the historical redefinition of the reader: once a member of a communal literary culture, the reader became private and introspective, morally and culturally shaped by choices in reading. She argues that eighteenth-century collections promised the reader that culture could be acquired through the absorption of literary values. This process of cultural education appealed to a middle class seeking to become discriminating consumers of art. By addressing this neglected genre, Benedict contributes a new perspective on the tension between popular and high culture, between the common reader and the elite. This book will interest scholars working in cultural studies and those studying noncanonical texts as well as eighteenth-century literature in general. Originally published in 1996. Book The Oxford Handbook of Andrew Marvell

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Andrew Marvell written by Martin Dzelzainis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Andrew Marvell is the most comprehensive and informative collection of essays ever assembled dealing with the life and writings of the poet and politician Andrew Marvell (1621-78). Like his friend and colleague John Milton, Marvell is now seen as a dominant figure in the literary landscape of the mid-seventeenth century, producing a stunning oeuvre of poetry and prose either side of the Restoration. In the 1640s and 1650s he was the author of hypercanonical lyrics like 'To His Coy Mistress' and 'The Garden' as well as three epoch-defining poems about Oliver Cromwell. After 1660 he virtually invented the verse genre of state satire as well as becoming the most influential prose satirist of the day—in the process forging a long-lived reputation as an incorruptible patriot. Although Marvell himself was an intensely private and self-contained character, whose literary, religious, and political commitments are notoriously difficult to discern, the interdisciplinary contributions by an array of experts in the fields of seventeenth-century literature, history, and politics gathered together in the Handbook constitute a decisive step forward in our understanding of him. They offer a fully-rounded account of his life and writings, individual readings of his key works, considerations of his relations with his major contemporaries, and surveys of his rich and varied afterlives. Informed by the wealth of editorial and biographical work on Marvell that has been produced in the last twenty years, the volume is both a conspectus of the state of the art in Marvell studies and the springboard for future research.
