  • Author : Ayuba Mshelia
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse

Download or read book Araba Let s Separate written by Ayuba Mshelia and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Araba(separation) was a word first used by rioters at a Bauchi demonstration signaling the Northern peoples desire to break from the federal republic of Nigeria. The catalyst for its first use was the cold-blooded murder of some prominent Northern elites, including the Premier of the North, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, by predominantly Igbo officers, on January 15, 1966 Araba became a rallying cry for the Norths disaffection with the state of affairs after Irons promulgation of the obnoxious decree No 34, making Nigeria a unitary state. In some quarters, it became resonant and synonymous with the rampant killing of Igbos in the North. These killings (similar things were happening to Northerners in the East) necessitated the mass movement of Igbos to the East and Northerners to the Northern territories. The Norths disaffection with decree No 34 led to the overthrow of Irons regime by predominantly Northern officers, led by, amongst others, M. Muhammed. However, military decorum and Northern political leadership demanded Muhammed defer to Gowon, even though Gowon was never part of the coup plan or a strong supporter of it. Indeed, if anything, he tried to quell it. The abrogation of decree No 34 and the creation of the twelve-state structure by Gowon was the final straw that broke the camels back for Ojukwu, who consequently proclaimed his territorys secession from Nigeria and the creation of an independent republic of Biafra formed out of the Eastern states. The seed for a bloody civil war was thus cast, and for four years the East felt the worst for it. However, the magnanimity of a blanket amnesty given to all the rebel soldiers at the end of hostilities was admirable, and an intelligent piece of statecraft, responsible for the easy and smooth absorption of those in the East into the economic and political life of the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s were traumatic years for the British: a mighty Empire was in its death-throes. But for Africans, these were years of immense exhilaration, of great expectations. Independence was within close reach. And in Nigeria, it was accepted that it should come quickly. But there was a problem: Nigeria's minorities profoundly feared for their future under African leaders. This study reveals the remarkable story of how and why the British authorities betrayed the Nigerian people in their treatment of this critical minorities issue, an issue of their own making...

Book Islamic Reform and Political Change in Northern Nigeria

Download or read book Islamic Reform and Political Change in Northern Nigeria written by Roman Loimeier and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s and 1980s were times of political and religious turmoil in Nigeria, characterized by governmental upheaval, and aggressive confrontations between the Sufi brotherhoods and the Izala movement. In Islamic Reform and Political Change in Northern Nigeria, Roman Loimeier explores the intermeshing of religion in the struggle for political influence and preservation of the interests of Nigerian Muslims. Loimeier's careful scholarship combines astute readings of the work of previous scholars--both published and unpublished--with archival material and the findings of his own fieldwork in Nigeria. His work fills a substantial gap in contemporary Nigerian studies. This book provides invaluable and essential reading for serious students of Nigerian politics and of Islamic movements in Africa.

Book Death and the Textile Industry in Nigeria

Download or read book Death and the Textile Industry in Nigeria written by Elisha P Renne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon thinking about the work of the dead in the context of deindustrialization—specifically, the decline of the textile industry in Kaduna, Nigeria—and its consequences for deceased workers’ families. The author shows how the dead work in various ways for Christians and Muslims who worked in KTL mill in Kaduna, not only for their families who still hope to receive termination remittances, but also as connections to extended family members in other parts of Nigeria and as claims to land and houses in Kaduna. Building upon their actions as a way of thinking about the ways that the dead work for the living, the author focuses on three major themes. The first considers the growth of the city of Kaduna as a colonial construct which, as the capital of the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, was organized by neighborhoods, by public cemeteries, and by industrial areas. The second theme examines the establishment of textile mills in the industrial area and new ways of thinking about work and labor organization, time regimens, and health, particularly occupational ailments documented in mill clinic records. The third theme discusses the consequences of KTL mill workers’ deaths for the lives of their widows and children. This book will be of interest to scholars of African studies, development studies, anthropology of work, and the history of industrialization. The Introduction, Chapter 2 and the Conclusion of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/e/9781003058137

Book Oil Politics and Violence

Download or read book Oil Politics and Violence written by Max Siollun and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An insider traces the details of hope and ambition gone wrong in the Giant of Africa, Nigeria, Africa's most populous country. When it gained independence from Britain in 1960, hopes were high that, with mineral wealth and over 140 million people, the most educated workforce in Africa, Nigeria would become Africa s first superpower and a stabilizing democratic influence in the region. However, these lofty hopes were soon dashed and the country lumbered from crisis to crisis, with the democratic government eventually being overthrown in a violent military coup in January 1966. From 1966 until 1999, the army held onto power almost uninterrupted under a succession of increasingly authoritarian military governments and army coups. Military coups and military rule (which began as an emergency aberration) became a seemingly permanent feature of Nigerian politics. The author names names, and explores how British influence aggravated indigenous rivalries. He shows how various factions in the military were able to hold onto power and resist civil and international pressure for democratic governance by exploiting the country's oil wealth and ethnic divisions to its advantage."--Publisher's description.
