Book Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God

Download or read book Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God written by R. Zachary Manis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a perfectly good and loving God consign anyone to eternal suffering in hell? In Sinners in the Presence of a Loving God, R. Zachary Manis examines in detail the various facets of the problem of hell, considers the reasons why the usual responses to the problem are unsatisfying, and suggests how an adequate solution to the problem can be constructed. Historically, there are four standard explanations of the nature and purpose of hell: traditionalism, annihilationism, the choice model, and universalism. In Manis's assessment, all are deficient in some crucial respect. The alternative view that he develops and defends, the divine presence model, stands within the tradition that understands hell to be a state of eternal conscious suffering, but, Manis contends, avoids the worst problems of its competitors. The key idea is that the suffering of hell is not the result of a divine act that aims to inflict it, but rather is the way in which a sinful creature necessarily experiences the unmitigated presence of a holy God. Heaven and hell are not two "places" to which the saved and damned are consigned, respectively, but rather are two radically different ways in which different persons will experience the same reality of God's omnipresence once the barrier of divine hiddenness is finally removed.

Book Excusing Sinners and Blaming God

Download or read book Excusing Sinners and Blaming God written by Guillaume Bignon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvinist determinism destroys moral responsibility and makes God the author of sin. These two accusations are not new, and were arguably anticipated by Paul in Romans 9, but they remain today the most important objections offered against Calvinist/determinist views of human free will. This book is a philosophically rigorous and comprehensive defense of Calvinism against these two families of arguments. With respect to human moral responsibility, it discusses whether determinism destroys “free will,” turns humans into pets or puppets, and involves or is analogous to coercion and manipulation. It responds to the consequence argument and direct argument for incompatibilism, the principle of alternate possibilities, the “ought implies can” maxim, and related claims. With respect to the authorship of sin, it discusses whether Calvinist determinism improperly involves God in evil. Does it mean that “God sins,” or “causes sin,” or “wills sin” in problematic ways? “Does God intend our sin, or (merely) permit sin?” In each case the coherence of the Calvinist view is defended against its most potent objections, to reject the claim that Calvinism is “excusing sinners and blaming God.”

Book The Spirit of Ultimate Life

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, ‘Spirit of Ultimate Life: Man’s Soul and Eternity,’ will enlighten you on the spiritual anthropology of man, though created in the image and after the likeness of God, whether you are white, black, or red- Indian. We belong to one family in Christ in whom all things consist, provided we believe in Him. Again, we are of three categories, and it is by these categories that everyone will stand naked before the judgment seat of God: the natural man, the carnal man and the spiritual man.

Book The Drum Major Instinct

Download or read book The Drum Major Instinct written by Justin Rose and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though there are several studies devoted to aspects of Martin Luther King Jr.'s intellectual thought, there has been no comprehensive study of his overarching theory of political service. In The Drum Major Instinct, Justin Rose draws on Martin Luther King Jr.'s sermons, political speeches, and writings to construct and conceptualize King's politics as a unified theory. Rose argues that King's theoretical framework--as seen throughout his wide body of writings--has three central components. First, King posited that all of humanity is tied to an ?inescapable network of mutuality? such that no member of society can fully flourish if there are structural barriers preventing others from flourishing. Second, King's theory required that Americans cultivate a sense of love and concern for their fellow members of society, which would motivate them to work collectively toward transforming others and structures of injustice. Finally, King contended that all members of society have the responsibility to participate in collective forms of resistance. This meant that even the oppressed were obligated to engage in political service. Therefore, marginalized people's struggles against injustice were considered an essential aspect of service. Taken together, King's theory of political service calls on all Americans, but especially black Americans, to engage in other-centered, collective action aimed at transforming themselves, others, and structures of injustice. By fully exploring King's thoughts on service, The Drum Major Instinct is an invaluable resource toward understanding how King wanted us all to work to create a more just, democratic society and how his thoughts continue to resonate in contemporary struggles.

Book Psychology Psychotherapy and Evangelicalism

Download or read book Psychology Psychotherapy and Evangelicalism written by J.G. McKenzie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1940, this is a contribution to the better understanding of Evangelical experience and doctrine. It is the author’s belief that the application of psychology to religion in general can make little or no further advance except through the study of particular types of religious experience. The various psychotherapeutic techniques provide the means for such a study, and in this volume they are applied to Evangelicalism. At first the author attempts to justify this application to Evangelical experience and doctrine, and outlines what he believes to be the essence of Evangelicalism. Part 2 of the book begins the contribution proper with an attempt to get a clear view of conscience and proceeds to salvation and its problems: conversion, guilt, sin, forgiveness, atonement. Part 3 deals with Evangelical experience and doctrine and the spiritual life of the Evangelical, and concludes with some general applications of psychology to Church work.

Download or read book The Witness of the Spirit written by Bernard Ramm and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Witness of the Spirit is a clear and comprehensive treatment of the teaching of the Word of God concerning the inner witness of the Spirit of God. The book opens with an account of Calvin's and Luther's contribution to this important theme, followed by a survey of the theological reflection upon this subject from the days of the early Church Fathers to the present time. Dr. Ramm shows that the work of the Holy Spirit is not a single subject to be discussed in isolation from the total area of Christian theology; therefore, he helpfully relates it to the doctrine of the Trinity, of revelation, redemption, and the Scripture; and to Christian fellowship and the spiritual life. Dr. Ramm's book is an invaluable and much needed contribution to a phase of the Spirit's ministry, an aspect long neglected in evangelical thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time travel is Angelika’s destiny. In my previous book, The Healing Circle, Angelika journeyed into the 17th century where she experienced three days within the horrors of a black plague outbreak. With the guidance of a wise matron and a dedicated physician she survived with the help of her fellow healers. In this sequel ‘Saints and Sinners’ Angelika continues her journey. After finishing her nursing training she feels the need to pay it forward by volunteering in a state of the art underground hospital during a modern day plague outbreak in 1972. Shortly after reuniting with her family, she once again is summoned to visit the past. Perhaps it is her gift of healing or her openness towards other dimensions which predestines her journey; this time into the 13th century to the Wartburg, an ancient castle sitting in the hills of Thuringia. There she meets Saint Elizabeth the patron saint of the church of her hometown and becomes reacquainted with her first true love. Is it possible that love can bridge centuries dimensions apart?
