Book A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest written by Robert H. Ruby and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Native peoples of the Pacific Northwest inhabit a vast region extending from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and from California to British Columbia. For more than two decades, A Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest has served as a standard reference on these diverse peoples. Now, in the wake of renewed tribal self-determination, this revised edition reflects the many recent political, economic, and cultural developments shaping these Native communities. From such well-known tribes as the Nez Perces and Cayuses to lesser-known bands previously presumed "extinct," this guide offers detailed descriptions, in alphabetical order, of 150 Pacific Northwest tribes. Each entry provides information on the history, location, demographics, and cultural traditions of the particular tribe. Among the new features offered here are an expanded selection of photographs, updated reading lists, and a revised pronunciation guide. While continuing to provide succinct histories of each tribe, the volume now also covers such contemporary—and sometimes controversial—issues as Indian gaming and NAGPRA. With its emphasis on Native voices and tribal revitalization, this new edition of the Guide to the Indian Tribes of the Pacific Northwest is certain to be a definitive reference for many years to come.

Book Indigenous Legacy

Download or read book Indigenous Legacy written by Michael O. Finley and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Today, twelve different bands of Native Americans call the Colville Indian Reservation in Northeast Washington State their home. Namely, the Wenatchi, Okanagan, Chelan, Entiat, Methow, Palouse, Nez Perce, Sinkiuse-Columbia, Colville, Lakes, Nespelem and San Poil. These bands share many cultural traditions, customs, and beliefs, while a select few are distinguishably different. For adolescents growing up on the Colville Reservation, (myself included) this was sometimes quite confusing and conflicting. Most striking, to me, was the amount of animosity, resentment, and hatred between bands and families living on the reservation. How could native peoples belonging to the same reservation harbor such ill feelings toward one another? I often wondered. Not until later in life did I truly understand the magnitude and complexity of this tantalizing question. Perhaps the most compelling answer, I found, lies within the reservation's name, the Colville Confederated Tribes. While researching the early years of the reservation, I found that the government failed to recognize each band as an individual nation. Following the establishment of the reservation, the government began to systematically place numerous bands onto these lands indiscriminately with little regard to their cultural relationships and customs. This sometimes increased existing animosity between bands that would come to occupy the Colville Reservation. One the earliest recorded examples of this animosity occurred several years after the establishment of the reservation involving Chief Skolaskin of the San Poil, Chief Moses of the Sinkiuse-Columbia and Chief Joseph of the Nez Ferces. Although the general contemporary view is that these tribes lived in harmony on the reservation, sources that I have unveiled would suggest otherwise. The further I researched, the further my interest was piqued. I found that published information on these three chiefs was scant at best: particularly with Chiefs Moses and Skolaskin, both of whom are almost entirely represented by the prominent author duo Robert H. Ruby and John A. Brown. Although Ruby and Brown's sources are highly invaluable and scholarly, I felt more could be written on these two chiefs. Using Ruby and Brown's work as my nucleus, I sought to find unpublished information. These sources, coupled with events lightly touched on by Ruby and Brown, make up a better portion of my work. At different points throughout my work, however, the reader will notice that I have cited Ruby and Brown quite favorably and extensively. I have done this to help bring some cohesiveness to my work and to give credit and tribute to Ruby and Brown's legacy. With the personal assistance of Robert Ruby, I was able to bring pertinent events and facts to light that weren't widely known until now. As for Joseph, I found it quite troubling that not much was written on him following his repatriation from exile in Oklahoma. Disturbingly, contemporary accounts are conflicting and some even concluded that Joseph died in Oklahoma. I found this unjust to Joseph, lobbyists, and others who fought so diligently for the Nez Perces' repatriation to the Northwest. Aside from reporting general life events of Chiefs Moses, Joseph and Skolaskin, the underlying purpose of this work will be to review the events surrounding the animosity between all three chiefs. Through this evaluation, I plan to provide the reader with a different understanding and perspective of these chiefs- by examining the conditions and circumstances of each chiefs life trials, which ultimately led to the tense meeting and near direct conflict at the Colville Agency in 1887. I will also review various aspects of the lives of all three influential chiefs, which will include each chiefs rise to chieftainship. I will explain all three chiefs political practices, personal conflicts, external conflicts, hardships, as well as general events that occurred throughout their lifetimes. Lastly, I will cover the ceding away of large tracts of Colville reservation lands. I will explain the contributing factors behind the diminishing of the reservation, which ultimately left the reservation half its original size. I will explain the government's role in the land repossessions as being directly influenced to appease the swarms of miners and settlers that were infiltrating the area during the latter part of the nineteenth century. I will review the promises made by the government for the land relinquishments and subsequently the government's failure to honor certain conditions outlined in both agreements. In the midst of this analysis, I will explain Chief Moses and Joseph's role in those land relinquishments."--Document.

Book A Native American Encyclopedia

Download or read book A Native American Encyclopedia written by Barry Pritzker and published by Oxford : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispelling myths, answering questions, and stimulating thoughtful avenues for further inquiry, this highly absorbing reference provides a wealth of specific information about over 200 North American Indian groups in Canada and the United States. Readers will easily access important historical and contemporary facts about everything from notable leaders and relations with non-natives to customs, dress, dwellings, weapons, government, and religion. This book is at once exhaustive and captivating, covering myriad aspects of a people spread across a continent. Divided into ten geographic areas for easy reference, this work illustrates each Native American group in careful detail. Listed alphabetically, starting with the tribal name, translation, origin, and definition, each entry includes significant facts about the group's location and population, as well as impressive accounts of the group's history and culture. Bringing entries up-to-date, Barry Pritzker also presents current information on each group's government, economy, legal status, and land holdings. Whether interpreting the term "tribe" (many traditional Native American groups were not tribes at all but more like extended families) or describing how a Shoshone woman served as a guide on the Lewis and Clark expedition, Pritzker always presents the material in a clear and lively manner. In light of past and ongoing injustices and the momentum of Indian and Inuit self-determination movements, an understanding of Native American cultures as well as their contributions to contemporary society becomes increasingly important. A magnificent resource, this book liberally provides the essential information necessary to better grasp the history and cultures of North American Indians.

Book Half Sun on the Columbia

Download or read book Half Sun on the Columbia written by Robert H. Ruby and published by Norman : University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1965 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Regional Award" Chief Moses (Sulktalthscosum or Half-Sun) was chief of the Columbias, a Salish-speaking people of the mid Columbia River area in what is now the state of Washington. This award-winning biography by Robert Ruby and John Brown situates Moses in the opening of the Northwest and subsequent Indian-white relations, between 1850 and 1898. Early in life Moses had won a name for himself battling whites, but with the maturity and responsibilities of chieftainship, he became a diplomat and held his united tribe at peace in spite of growing white encroachment. He resisted the call to arms of his friend Chief Joseph of the Nez Perces, whose heroic campaign ended in defeat and exile to Indian Territory. Their friendship persisted, however, and after Joseph's return to the Northwest, the two lived out their lives on the reservation, sharing their frustrations and uniting their voices in complaint.

Book Tribal Names of the Americas

Download or read book Tribal Names of the Americas written by Patricia Roberts Clark and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have long worked to identify the names of tribes and other groupings in the Americas, a task made difficult by the sheer number of indigenous groups and the many names that have been passed down only through oral tradition. This book is a compendium of tribal names in all their variants--from North, Central and South America--collected from printed sources. Because most of these original sources reproduced words that had been encountered only orally, there is a great deal of variation. Organized alphabetically, this book collates these variations, traces them to the spellings and forms that have become standardized, and supplies see and see also references. Each main entry includes tribal name, the "parent group" or ancestral tribe, original source for the tribal name, and approximate location of the name in the original source material.

Book The Indian Tribes of North America

Download or read book The Indian Tribes of North America written by John Reed Swanton and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2003 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the definitive one-volume guide to the Indian tribes of North America, and it covers all groupings such as nations, confederations, tribes, subtribes, clans, and bands. It is a digest of all Indian groups and their historical locations throughout the continent. Formatted as a dictionary, or gazetteer, and organized by state, it includes all known tribal groupings within the state and the many villages where they were located. Using the year 1650 to determine the general location of most of the tribes, Swanton has drawn four over-sized fold-out maps, each depicting a different quadrant of North America and the location of the various tribes therein, including not only the tribes of the United States, Canada, Greenland, Mexico, and Central America, but the Caribbean islands as well. According to the author, the gazetteer and the maps are "intended to inform the general reader what Indian tribes occupied the territory of his State and to add enough data to indicate the place they occupied among the tribal groups of the continent and the part they played in the early period of our history. . . ." Accordingly, the bulk of the text includes such facts as the origin of the tribal name and a brief list of the more important synonyms; the linguistic connections of the tribe; its location; a brief sketch of its history; its population at different periods; and the extent to which its name has been perpetuated geographically.--From publisher description.
