Download or read book Native American Mystery Writing written by Mary Stoecklein and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though mystery, crime, and detective fiction are some of the most popular genres in the world, little scholarship currently exists regarding Native American writers and how they add new dimensions to this widely read literary form. Rather, the majority of scholarship examines the depiction of Native characters from the perspective of non-Native authors. Native American Mystery Writing: Indigenous Investigations analyzes how Native authors use the genre to foreground centuries of settler-colonial crimes and comment upon the ways in which these acts continue to impact Native individuals and communities today. Considering fourteen novels and two made-for-TV films, this book surveys a spectrum of settler-colonial crimes: the Osage oil murders, sexual assault against Native women, missing and murdered Indigenous women, the California mission system, suppression of spiritual beliefs, theft—of land, children, and cultural items—and, of course, murder. Examination of these texts shows how Native authors working with the mystery, crime, and detective fiction formats are able to entertain readers while also sending strong social, cultural, and political messages that argue for strengthened tribal sovereignty and illustrate the resilience of Indigenous peoples—all in order to promote discussions about creating a more just system for Native Nations.

Book excerpt: It was no mystery why I hated Genesis Gusano. She liked to take other people’s things. The bitch stole a pair of my cutest shoes along with my favorite necklace and a school paper I’d written, which had nearly gotten me expelled from Haverick University entirely. But the last straw came when she dared to take the one thing I’d been pining over for two years. Him. I had craved Hudson Ivey in a way I didn’t even know craving was possible, and that was before I’d learned his dang name. He had no idea he’d become a possession that two enemies were warring over. All he wanted to do was graduate with his culinary arts degree and become the best chef possible. But now he’s stuck in Genesis’s sick game until a ghost from his past changes all the rules, possessing him in a whole new, far more dangerous way. I promised myself I was done with the paranormal life. I was determined to be a normal, everyday, average girl. But I can’t just stand aside and watch him be destroyed. So I guess it’s time for a little Faith to step in and save the day.

Download or read book Myself written by Leigh Santoro and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Theodore Teddy Thyme is one of the best in his field. He finds his professional work both industrious and enjoyable. Raine Justice Liverboardman will prove to be the ultimate challenge of Dr. Thymes entire career. Raine has been charged with attempted capital murder. Dr. Thyme is the psychiatrist chosen to examine Raine to determine if Raine is fit for trial. The case itself is hazy at best. No body had been discovered; yet Raine confessed to the murder. When Dr. Thyme meets Raine, he finds a person infected by evil and genius in equal quantities. He questions Raines family members and finds a history of bizarre, ghastly, and probably abusive people. Which may explain the murderous behavior of his patient. However, as the case goes to trial Dr. Thyme wonders if Raine is up to something more macabre. Some sort of sick joke, of sorts. Raine is certainly intelligent enough to undermine the United States judicial system. Yet there is a full confession from Raine on record. Haunted by Raine, Dr. Thyme might soon discover that the proximity to madness has severe consequences. These characters make the Jukes look like the Brady Bunch. Trying to understand the family tests even Thymes superlative skills. Blueink Review In Myself, Leigh Santoro tackles the viewpoints of multiple characters in the examination of a man who has been charged with attempted capital murder. The plot itself is interesting. Those who enjoy psychological intrigue may find this book fascinating. Readers who enjoy weighty psychological mysteries will be intrigued by Santoros premise. Foreword Reviews Santoros novel is a scrupulously detailed narrative. She unflinchingly delves into Raines psyche but handles the story with competence and finesse. The interviews Thymes conducted help the reader understand diagnoses like paranoid personality disorder, afflicting both Raine and Warren. The story in general is baffling, but the docs examination of an eccentric protagonist is enthralling. Kirkus Reviews
Download or read book A History of American Crime Fiction written by Chris Raczkowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of American Crime Fiction places crime fiction within a context of aesthetic practices and experiments, intellectual concerns, and historical debates generally reserved for canonical literary history. Toward that end, the book is divided into sections that reflect the periods that commonly organize American literary history, with chapters highlighting crime fiction's reciprocal relationships with early American literature, romanticism, realism, modernism and postmodernism. It surveys everything from 17th-century execution sermons, the detective fiction of Harriet Spofford and T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land, to the films of David Lynch, HBO's The Sopranos, and the podcast Serial, while engaging a wide variety of critical methods. As a result, this book expands crime fiction's significance beyond the boundaries of popular genres and explores the symbiosis between crime fiction and canonical literature that sustains and energizes both.
Download or read book Pirates in Paradise written by Stefan Eklöf and published by NIAS Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia contains some of the world's busiest shipping waters, particularly the Indonesian archipelago, the Straits of Malacca and South China Sea. The natural geography and human ecology of maritime Southeast Asia makes the area particularly apt for piracy. It is perhaps no surprise, then, that these waters are also the world's most pirate-infested, accounting for over a third of the total number of pirate attacks world-wide. The figures have increased in recent years, as transnationally organized crime syndicates have extended their activities in the area. Meanwhile, the capacity of the state authorities in the region to suppress piracy appears to have declined, fuelling suspicions that sections of the maritime authorities are colluding with some of the organized pirate gangs that they are supposed to be combating. Not surprisingly, piracy has a long history in the region, and in several instances during the last 250 years, pirates have disrupted peaceful trade and communications. This text traces the shifting character and development of Southeast Asian piracy from the 18th century to the present day, demonstrating how political, economic, social and technological factors have contributed to change - but have by no means exterminated - the phenomenon. -- Description from http://www.amazon.co.uk (Oct. 19, 2011).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Sucevic comes a steamy, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, new adult sports romance that is laugh out loud funny featuring a strong heroine and the cocky hockey player who falls first and hard for her. Grayson McNichols can have his pick of girls on this campus. Just ask him and he’ll tell you that the females of Hillsdale University have a real penchant for sexy, hockey playing hotties. Hell, all he has to do is flash a smile in their direction and they fall right onto their backs and spread their legs. Would I happen to be one of them? Umm…I’m going to plead the fifth on that one. All right, fine. You caught me. I made the mistake of knocking boots with Gray freshman year. What can I say? I’m a sucker for gorgeous guys with inky black hair, bright blue eyes, and dimples. And don’t even get me started on his chiseled chest and abs of steel… After we hooked up, I never heard from Gray again. Not that I expected too. Okay, that’s a lie. Maybe for one brief, delusional moment, I thought I might be different. You know, the girl who changes the hockey playing bad boy for the better (cue the laughter). But he swiftly disabused me of that notion by moving on to fresh meat in the blink of an eye. Which is precisely why I’ve avoided Grayson like the plague ever since. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, and I totally deserve what I get. Well, I don’t plan on falling into that trap ever again. Except…now our parents are dating, and Gray’s come up with a cockamamie plan to break them up that has disaster written all over it. --- “I loved this book! Download or read book The Cursed written by Harper L. Woods and published by Bramble. This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Harper L. Woods, comes The Cursed, the next chapter in her Coven of Bones series--a pulse-pounding romantasy where The Magicians meets Gothikana. Betrayal. He was the deception waiting in the night; the truth I never saw coming. After a lifetime of manipulation, I finally learned the truth. I was his puppet—even if I never saw my strings. Even knowing how deep his betrayal runs, I can’t shake the undeniable connection between Gray and I—the way a single glance from him sets my soul on fire. We are not the same. We're enemies, poised to battle for the future of the very thing I’d wanted to destroy. With the Covenant gone, the revenge I thought I wanted is no longer my priority. The witches that remain played no role in my aunt’s death, and the only person standing in the way of righting those wrongs is the very man determined to keep me in his bed. But the remaining members of the Coven will never forgive me for the role I played in their demise and subjugation, and the worst part of all is that I can’t even blame them for it. I’d been naive, believing my own delusions of grandeur when destiny clearly had other plans for me. Plans that had been set in motion centuries before my birth. But even that had been a lie, and now it is my duty to do everything in my power to undo it. To protect my Coven from my husband’s hatred—no matter what the cost.
