Book The Psychology of Joss Whedon

Download or read book The Psychology of Joss Whedon written by Joy Davidson and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First there was “Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; then its spin-off “Angel"; then the cult hit “Firefly"; and its follow-up film, “Serenity." They all had two things in common: their creator, Joss Whedon … and their surprising psychological depth. Revisit the worlds of Joss Whedon … with trained psychologists at your side. What are the psychological effects of constantly fighting for your life? Why is neuroscience the Whedonverse's most terrifying villain? How can watching Joss's shows help you take on your own psychological issues? It's all the best parts of Psych 101—without Professor Walsh. * Robert Kurzban explains how Mal's morals are a form of evolutionary pornography, and why we like to watch * Thomas Flamson explores free will in the Whedonverse—with prophecies, sacred duties and the long arm of the Alliance, does anyone actually have any? * Carole Poole demonstrates how Buffy and Spike's season six relationship could be considered metaphor for narcissistic personality disorder—and concludes that Buffy may have been better off continuing it * Bradley J. Daniels looks at River's Alliance-altered brain, and the real effects of “stripping" the amygdala * Mikhail Lyubansky shows why, psychologically, death really is Buffy's gift * And editor Joy Davidson takes on Angel's mommy issues—how the course of his whole extraordinary existence can be traced back to the woman who made him a vampire

Book The Art of Peace

Download or read book The Art of Peace written by Juliana Geran Pilon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sun Tzu, author of 'The Art of War', believed that the acme of leadership consists in figuring out how to subdue the enemy with the least amount of fighting?a fact that America's Founders also understood, and practiced with astonishing success. For it to work, however, a people must possess both the ability and the willingness to use all available instruments of power in peace as much as in war. US foreign policy has increasingly neglected the instruments of civilian power and become overly dependent on lethal solutions to conflict. The steep rise in unconventional conflict has increased the need for diplomatic and other non-hard power tools of statecraft. The United States can no longer afford to sit on the proverbial three-legged national security stool ("military, diplomacy, development"), where one leg is a lot longer than either of the other two, almost forgetting altogether the fourth leg?information, especially strategic communication and public diplomacy. The United States isn't so much becoming militarized as DE civilianized. According to Sun Tzu, self-knowledge is as important as knowledge of one's enemy: "if you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you will succumb in every battle." Alarmingly, the United States is deficient on both counts. And though we can stand to lose a few battles, the stakes of losing the war itself in this age of nuclear proliferation are too high to contemplate.

Book Dostoevsky

    Book Details:
  • Author : Grant Walker Broadhurst

  • Release : 2023-12-22
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Dostoevsky written by Grant Walker Broadhurst and published by An Unexpected Journal. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dostoevsky Sober Hope: Finding Faith in the Bleak Midwinter As winter descends to end the year 2023, it is a time for contemplation: a time to revel in the joys and find balm for the woes of the past year, a time to find the courage to hold on, and the hope to thrive in the new year. Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821 - 1881) faced his own bleak (and Russian!) winters, from childhood play amongst the impoverished at his father’s medical clinic to a last minute reprieve from the Tsar’s firing squad for discussing banned books followed by ten years of prison camp and military service in exile. While his novels, such as Crime & Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov demonstrate human depravity they also give glimmers of grace, love, and beauty which have made him one of the most beloved novelists of all time. It is our hope that as you find time to relax during the holiday season (making it a habit for the new year!), that you will find these discussions deeply meaningful. Awaiting for you within are discussions of his characters from novels and short stories alike, Dostoevsky-inspired poems, and reviews of films, books, and even contemporary music which reflect the light and warmth he dared to find in his own bleak winter. Book excerpt: "A dozen or more humanoid alien infants have been brought to Earth to be given into the care of major Earth governments. This is stunning but distant news - until Morgan is hired to raise one of them, named Blue. When Blue confounds everyone by insisting on coming, with all the attendant government surveillance, to live in Morgan's house, conflict is inevitable and a murder is committed. But the mysteries of the alien boy ( or is it a girl?) in their midst are more profound than the mystery of the crime. Through it all, Morgan's ideals never waver, she truly believes that all beings, human and alien, can live in harmony. Dorsey's skill with characters, both human and alien, and with their complex relationships, will evoke comparisons with the SF classics of Theodore Sturgeon."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Buffy and the Heroine s Journey

Download or read book Buffy and the Heroine s Journey written by Valerie Estelle Frankel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worlds of Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and other modern epics feature the Chosen One--an adolescent boy who defeats the Dark Lord and battles the sorrows of the world. Television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer represents a different kind of epic--the heroine's journey, not the hero's. This provocative study explores how Buffy blends 1990s girl power and the path of the warrior woman with the oldest of mythic traditions. It chronicles her descent into death and subsequent return like the great goddesses of antiquity. As she sacrifices her life for the helpless, Buffy experiences the classic heroine's quest, ascending to protector and queen in this timeless metaphor for growing into adulthood.
