Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents articles originating from invited talks at an exciting international conference held at The Fields Institute in Toronto celebrating the sixtieth birthday of the renowned mathematician, Vladimir Arnold. Experts from the world over--including several from "Arnold's school"--gave illuminating talks and lively poster sessions. The presentations focused on Arnold's main areas of interest: singularity theory, the theory of curves, symmetry groups, dynamical systems, mechanics, and related areas of mathematics. The book begins with notes of three lectures by V. Arnold given in the framework of the Institute's Distinguished Lecturer program. The topics of the lectures are: (1) From Hilbert's Superposition Problem to Dynamical Systems (2) Symplectization, Complexification, and Mathematical Trinities (3) Topological Problems in Wave Propagation Theory and Topological Economy Principle in Algebraic Geometry. Arnold's three articles include insightful comments on Russian and Western mathematics and science. Complementing the first is Jurgen Moser's "Recollections", concerning some of the history of KAM theory.

Book excerpt: Algorithmic and quantitative aspects in real algebraic geometry are becoming increasingly important areas of research because of their roles in other areas of mathematics and computer science. The papers in this volume collectively span several different areas of current research. The articles are based on talks given at the DIMACS Workshop on ''Algorithmic and Quantitative Aspects of Real Algebraic Geometry''. Topics include deciding basic algebraic properties of real semi-algebraic sets, application of quantitative results in real algebraic geometry towards investigating the computational complexity of various problems, algorithmic and quantitative questions in real enumerative geometry, new approaches towards solving decision problems in semi-algebraic geometry, as well as computing algebraic certificates, and applications of real algebraic geometry to concrete problems arising in robotics and computer graphics. The book is intended for researchers interested in computational methods in algebra.

Download or read book Geometry Revealed written by Marcel Berger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both classical geometry and modern differential geometry have been active subjects of research throughout the 20th century and lie at the heart of many recent advances in mathematics and physics. The underlying motivating concept for the present book is that it offers readers the elements of a modern geometric culture by means of a whole series of visually appealing unsolved (or recently solved) problems that require the creation of concepts and tools of varying abstraction. Starting with such natural, classical objects as lines, planes, circles, spheres, polygons, polyhedra, curves, surfaces, convex sets, etc., crucial ideas and above all abstract concepts needed for attaining the results are elucidated. These are conceptual notions, each built "above" the preceding and permitting an increase in abstraction, represented metaphorically by Jacob's ladder with its rungs: the 'ladder' in the Old Testament, that angels ascended and descended... In all this, the aim of the book is to demonstrate to readers the unceasingly renewed spirit of geometry and that even so-called "elementary" geometry is very much alive and at the very heart of the work of numerous contemporary mathematicians. It is also shown that there are innumerable paths yet to be explored and concepts to be created. The book is visually rich and inviting, so that readers may open it at random places and find much pleasure throughout according their own intuitions and inclinations. Marcel Berger is t he author of numerous successful books on geometry, this book once again is addressed to all students and teachers of mathematics with an affinity for geometry.

Book Singularities of Mappings

Download or read book Singularities of Mappings written by David Mond and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first monograph on singularities of mappings for many years, this book provides an introduction to the subject and an account of recent developments concerning the local structure of complex analytic mappings. Part I of the book develops the now classical real C∞ and complex analytic theories jointly. Standard topics such as stability, deformation theory and finite determinacy, are covered in this part. In Part II of the book, the authors focus on the complex case. The treatment is centred around the idea of the "nearby stable object" associated to an unstable map-germ, which includes in particular the images and discriminants of stable perturbations of unstable singularities. This part includes recent research results, bringing the reader up to date on the topic. By focusing on singularities of mappings, rather than spaces, this book provides a necessary addition to the literature. Many examples and exercises, as well as appendices on background material, make it an invaluable guide for graduate students and a key reference for researchers. A number of graduate level courses on singularities of mappings could be based on the material it contains.

Book Real Analytic and Algebraic Singularities

Download or read book Real Analytic and Algebraic Singularities written by Toshisumi Fukui and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-12-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a collection of papers covering recent progress in a number of areas of singularity theory. Topics include blow analyticity, recent progress in the research on equivalence relations of maps and functions, sufficiency of jets, and the transversality theorem. . Geometric and analytic studies of partial differential equations have been developed independently of one another, but the shock wave solutions appearing in natural phenomena are not well understood. Singularity theory may unify these studies and a survey based on this viewpoint is presented in which a new notion of weak solution is introduced. There are also reports on the recent progress in Zariski's conjecture on multiplicities of hypersurfaces, transcendency of analytic sets and on the topology of weighted homogeneous polynomials. This book will be of particular interest to specialists in singularities, partial differential equations, algebraic geometry and control theory.

Book Arc Spaces and Additive Invariants in Real Algebraic and Analytic Geometry

Download or read book Arc Spaces and Additive Invariants in Real Algebraic and Analytic Geometry written by Michel Coste and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the authors present some new trends in real algebraic geometry based on the study of arc spaces and additive invariants of real algebraic sets. Generally, real algebraic geometry uses methods of its own that usually differ sharply from the more widely known methods of complex algebraic geometry. This feature is particularly apparent when studying the basic topological and geometric properties of real algebraic sets; the rich algebraic structures are usually hidden and cannot be recovered from the topology. The use of arc spaces and additive invariants partially obviates this disadvantage. Moreover, these methods are often parallel to the basic approaches of complex algebraic geometry. The authors' presentation contains the construction of local topological invariants of real algebraic sets by means of algebraically constructible functions. This technique is extended to the wider family of arc-symmetric semialgebraic sets. Moreover, the latter family defines a natural topology that fills a gap between the Zariski topology and the euclidean topology. In real equisingularity theory, Kuo's blow-analytic equivalence of real analytic function germs provides an equivalence relation that corresponds to topological equivalence in the complex analytic set-up. Among other applications, arc-symmetric geometry, via the motivic integration approach, gives new invariants of this equivalence, allowing some initial classification results. The volume contains two courses and two survey articles that are designed for a wide audience, in particular students and young researchers.
