Book excerpt: Toni Bentley, a dancer for George Balanchine, the greatest ballet maker of the 20th century, tells the story of Serenade, his iconic masterpiece, and what it was like to dance—and live—in his world at New York City Ballet during its legendary era. At age seventeen, Toni Bentley was chosen by Balanchine, then in his final years, to join the New York City Ballet. From both backstage and onstage, she carries us through the serendipitous history and physical intricacies and demands of Serenade: its dazzling opening, with seventeen women in a double-diamond pattern; its radical, even jazzy, use of the highly refined language that is ballet; its place in the choreographer’s own dramatic story of his immigration to the United States from Soviet Russia; its mystical—and literal—embodiment of the tradition of classical ballet in just thirty-three minutes. Bentley takes us inside the rarefied, intense, and thrilling world Balanchine created through his lifelong devotion to celebrating and expanding female beauty and strength—a world that, inevitably, passed upon his death. An intimate elegy to grace and loss and to the imprint of a towering artist and his transcendent creation on Bentley’s own life, Serenade: A Balanchine Story is a rich narrative by a dynamic artist about the nature of art itself at its most ephemeral and glorious.

Book Theocritus and his native Muse

Download or read book Theocritus and his native Muse written by Poulheria Kyriakou and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellenistic poets opted and were very likely expected to deal meaningfully, and perhaps competitively, with the tradition they inherited. They also needed to secure the goodwill of actual or potential patrons. Apollonius, the author of a novel heroic epic, eschews references to literary polemics and patronage. Callimachus often adopts a polemical stance against some colleagues in order to suggest his poetic excellence. Theocritus chooses a third way, which has not been investigated adequately. He avoids antagonism but ironizes the theme of poetic excellence and distances himself from the tradition of competitive success. He does not cast his narrators as superior to predecessors and contemporaries but stresses the advantages and merits of colleagues. This rejection of conceit is connected with a major strand in Theocritean poetry: the power of word, including song, to provide assistance to characters in distress is a major open issue. Language is versatile and potent but not all-powerful. Song gives pleasure but is not a panacea while instruction and advice are never helpful and may even prove harmful. Most genuine pieces are ambiguous and open-ended so that the aspirations of characters are not presented as doomed to failure.

Book excerpt: AGING – You can run from it, but you can’t hide, so the inevitable question is HOW ARE YOU GOING TO MEET IT? With avoidance, rigidity, or resignation on a mournful protest through your remaining years? Or will you enhance the quality of your remaining lifetime by meeting aging with acceptance, curiosity, resilience, gratitude, and even awe? Weaving together the benefits of mindfulness meditation and Jungian psychology, Moonlight Serenade: Embracing Aging Mindfully extends an invitation to meet your aging years consciously and courageously by being aware of the inevitable passing of time; by learning to experience each moment fully; and by creating a healthy relationship with all that time presents, including the 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows of life. Major life provocations, including chronic pain, grief, and life-limiting illness, are challenging at any age but especially during the later years, so they are examined in-depth. Rather than a futile attempt to transcend your human experience, Moonlight Serenade provides skills and attitudes to meet your aging years boldly, confidently and wholeheartedly. Through an unflinchingly honest and compassionate tone, Dr. Wallace guides you through a detailed nine-week program of instruction to help aging readers like yourself develop and cultivate a personal practice of mindful awareness of each moment. To assist in learning mindfulness practices, audio meditation instructions are available at the book’s website, www.embracingagingmindfully.com. However, this is more than a how-to book as he also resurrects aging from its cultural pessimism by extending the opportunity to courageously explore and experience an attitudinal transformation of your relationship to life. There is a better way to live the remaining years of your life—no matter how long that may be. While aging inevitably involves losses, it also offers the opportunity for personal growth and development to become all you can be. Mindfulness meditation and Jungian practices are offered as self-sung serenades, encouraging you to lovingly court and support yourself throughout your aging moonlit years.
