Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Thesis deals with recent progress regarding singularities in General Relativity. Singularities are predicted by the theory, but raise difficult problems, because they make the usual equations to be plagued with infinities and to break down. To resolve some of these problems, extensions of differential geometry and of Einstein's equation to singularities were needed, and were constructed by the author. This generalization works easily at the Big-Bang singularity, which gained by this a description in terms of finite quantities which have both geometric and physical meaning. Moreover, a large class of Big-Bang singularities which are not necessarily homogeneous or isotropic is presented. In addition, these singularities satisfy the Weyl curvature hypothesis, emitted by Penrose to explain the arrow of time. The black hole singularities apparently are more difficult to deal with, but by applying a special procedure they turn out as well to admit a description in terms of finite quantities. In addition, these singularities exhibit a (geo)metric dimensional reduction, which might act as a regulator for the quantum fields, including for quantum gravity, in the high-energy limit. This opens the perspective of perturbative quantum gravity without modifying General Relativity.

Book Singular Null Hypersurfaces In General Relativity Light like Signals From Violent Astrophysical Events

Download or read book Singular Null Hypersurfaces In General Relativity Light like Signals From Violent Astrophysical Events written by Peter A Hogan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive and self-contained exposition of the mathematical theory of impulsive light-like signals in general relativity. Applications are provided in relativistic astrophysics, cosmology and alternative theories of gravity deduced from string theory. Cataclysmic astrophysical events give rise to impulsive light-like signals which can generally be decomposed into a thin shell of null matter and an impulsive gravitational wave. Several examples are considered in black hole physics, wave collisions and light-like boosts of compact gravitating sources.Graduate students and researchers in relativistic astrophysics, cosmology and string theory will find this book very useful.

Book The Large Scale Structure of Space Time

Download or read book The Large Scale Structure of Space Time written by S. W. Hawking and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-02-27 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.

Book A Relativist s Toolkit

    Book Details:

  • Release : 2004-05-06
  • ISBN : 1139451995
  • Pages : 253 pages

Download or read book A Relativist s Toolkit written by Eric Poisson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-06 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2004 textbook fills a gap in the literature on general relativity by providing the advanced student with practical tools for the computation of many physically interesting quantities. The context is provided by the mathematical theory of black holes, one of the most elegant, successful, and relevant applications of general relativity. Among the topics discussed are congruencies of timelike and null geodesics, the embedding of spacelike, timelike and null hypersurfaces in spacetime, and the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of general relativity. Although the book is self-contained, it is not meant to serve as an introduction to general relativity. Instead, it is meant to help the reader acquire advanced skills and become a competent researcher in relativity and gravitational physics. The primary readership consists of graduate students in gravitational physics. It will also be a useful reference for more seasoned researchers working in this field.

Book Regular Black Holes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cosimo Bambi
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2023-07-06
  • ISBN : 9819915961
  • Pages : 505 pages

Download or read book Regular Black Holes written by Cosimo Bambi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black holes are one of the most fascinating predictions of general relativity. They are the natural product of the complete gravitational collapse of matter and today we have a body of observational evidence supporting the existence of black holes in the Universe. However, general relativity predicts that at the center of black holes there are spacetime singularities, where predictability is lost and standard physics breaks down. It is widely believed that spacetime singularities are a symptom of the limitations of general relativity and must be solved within a theory of quantum gravity. Since we do not have yet any mature and reliable candidate for a quantum gravity theory, researchers have studied toy-models of singularity-free black holes and of singularity-free gravitational collapses in order to explore possible implications of the yet unknown theory of quantum gravity. This book reviews all main models of regular black holes and non-singular gravitational collapses proposed in the literature, and discuss the theoretical and observational implications of these scenarios.

  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book General Relativity written by Ghanashyam Date and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Broad Perspective on the Theory of General Relativity and Its Observable Implications General Relativity: Basics and Beyond familiarizes students and beginning researchers with the basic features of the theory of general relativity as well as some of its more advanced aspects. Employing the pedagogical style of a textbook, it includes essential ideas and just enough background material needed for readers to appreciate the issues and current research. Basics The first five chapters form the core of an introductory course on general relativity. The author traces Einstein’s arguments and presents examples of space-times corresponding to different types of gravitational fields. He discusses the adaptation of dynamics in a Riemannian geometry framework, the Einstein equation and its elementary properties, and different phenomena predicted or influenced by general relativity. Beyond Moving on to more sophisticated features of general relativity, the book presents the physical requirements of a well-defined deterministic framework for non-gravitational dynamics and describes the characterization of asymptotic space-times. After covering black holes, gravitational waves, and cosmological space-times, the book examines the evolutionary interpretation for the class of globally hyperbolic space-times, explores numerical relativity, and discusses approaches that address the challenges of general relativity.
