Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, is the world's largest and highest energy and highest intensity particle accelerator. Here is a timely book with several perspectives on the hoped-for discoveries from the LHC.This book provides an overview on the techniques that will be crucial for finding new physics at the LHC, as well as perspectives on the importance and implications of the discoveries. Among the accomplished contributors to this book are leaders and visionaries in the field of particle physics beyond the Standard Model, including two Nobel Laureates (Steven Weinberg and Frank Wilczek), and presumably some future Nobel Laureates, plus top younger theorists and experimenters. With its blend of popular and technical contents, the book will have wide appeal, not only to physical scientists but also to those in related fields.

Book Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Physics at the Large Hadron Collider written by Amitava Datta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an epoch when particle physics is awaiting a major step forward, the Large Hydron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva will soon be operational. It will collide a beam of high energy protons with another similar beam circulation in the same 27 km tunnel but in the opposite direction, resulting in the production of many elementary particles some never created in the laboratory before. It is widely expected that the LHC will discover the Higgs boson, the particle which supposedly lends masses to all other fundamental particles. In addition, the question as to whether there is some new law of physics at such high energy is likely to be answered through this experiment. The present volume contains a collection of articles written by international experts, both theoreticians and experimentalists, from India and abroad, which aims to acquaint a non-specialist with some basic issues related to the LHC. At the same time, it is expected to be a useful, rudimentary companion of introductory exposition and technical expertise alike, and it is hoped to become unique in its kind. The fact that there is substantial Indian involvement in the entire LHC endeavour, at all levels including fabrication, physics analysis procedures as well as theoretical studies, is also amply brought out in the collection.

Book Spin Correlations in tt Events from pp Collisions

Download or read book Spin Correlations in tt Events from pp Collisions written by Boris Lemmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis introduces readers to the Standard Model, the top quark and its properties, before explaining the concept of spin correlation measurement. The first measurement of top quark spin correlations at the LHC in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. As the heaviest elementary particle, the top quark plays an essential role in the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. In the case of top quarks being produced in pairs at hadron colliders, the Standard Model predicts their spins to be correlated. The degree of correlation depends on both the production mechanism and properties of the top quark. Any deviation from the Standard Model prediction can be an indicator for new physics phenomena. The thesis employs an advanced top quark reconstruction algorithm including dedicated identification of the up- and down-type quarks from the W boson decay.

Book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass Using Single Top Quark Events in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of the Top Quark Mass Using Single Top Quark Events in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A measurement of the top quark mass is reported in events containing a single top quark produced via the electroweak t channel. The analysis is performed using data from proton-proton collisions collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The top quark is reconstructed from its decay to a W boson and a b quark, with the W boson decaying leptonically to a muon and a neutrino. The specific topology and kinematic properties of single top quark events in the t channel are used to enhance the purity of the sample, suppressing the contribution from top quark pair production. A fit to the invariant mass distribution of reconstructed top quark candidates yields a value of the top quark mass of 172.95 +/- 0.77 (stat) +0.97/-0.93 (syst) GeV. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and represents the first measurement of the top quark mass in event topologies not dominated by top quark pair production.

Book Off shell Effects for Single Top quark Production Processes at Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Off shell Effects for Single Top quark Production Processes at Hadron Colliders written by Paul Mellor and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: We present a calculation of s- and t-channel single top-quark production and decay at next-to-leading order in QCD for the Tevatron and for the LHC. The calculation includes the off-shell effects of the intermediate top-quark and the non-factorisable corrections arising from interferences between the production and decay subprocesses, extending the results beyond the narrow-width approximation. A general method for including such effects is outlined. The method comprises a simultaneous expansion in the coupling constants, as in a standard perturbative approach, along with an expansion in the virtuality of the intermediate heavy-particle. This expansion makes it possible to identify the contributions relevant to the calculation, up to a desired accuracy, before computation of the amplitudes, allowing significant simplifications to be made to the final calculation. Results obtained using this method are presented, along with results obtained using both the standard and improved narrow-width approximations. This enables us to investigate the impact of both off-shell and spin-correlation effects on the cross section and various kinematic distributions. In general, both effects are found to be small except close to kinematic boundaries or for specific distributions, such as the top-quark invariant-mass, where their effects can become sizeable.

Book Search for Flavor Changing Neutral Current Top Quark Decays t Hq with H bb in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Search for Flavor Changing Neutral Current Top Quark Decays t Hq with H bb in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with the ATLAS Detector written by Shota Tsiskaridze and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis focuses on the search for flavor-changing neutral currents in the decay of a top quark to an up-type quark (q = u, c) and the Standard Model Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson decays to bb. Further, the thesis presents the combination of this search for top quark pair events with other ATLAS searches – in the course of which the most restrictive bounds to date on tqH interactions were obtained. Following on from the discovery of the Higgs boson, it is particularly important to measure the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions; these parameters may provide crucial insights to help solve the flavor puzzle and may help reveal the presence of new physics before it is directly observed in experiments.

Book Searches for Lorentz Violation in Top Quark Production and Decay at Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Searches for Lorentz Violation in Top Quark Production and Decay at Hadron Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a first-of-its-kind confirmation that the most massive known elementary particle obeys the special theory of relativity. Lorentz symmetry is a fundamental aspect of special relativity which posits that the laws of physics are invariant regardless of the orientation and velocity of the reference frame in which they are measured. Because this symmetry is a fundamental tenet of physics, it is important to test its validity in all processes. We quantify violation of this symmetry using the Standard-Model Extension framework, which predicts the effects that Lorentz violation would have on elementary particles and their interactions. The top quark is the most massive known elementary particle and has remained inaccessible to tests of Lorentz invariance until now. This model predicts a dependence of the production cross section for top and antitop quark pairs on sidereal time as the orientation of the experiment in which these events are produced changes with the rotation of the Earth. Using data collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we search for violation of Lorentz invariance in events involving the production of a $t\bar{t}$ pair. Within the experimental precision, we find no evidence for such a violation and set upper limits on parameters describing its possible strength within the Standard-Model Extension. We also investigate the prospects for extending this analysis using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider which, because of the higher rate of $t\bar{t}$ events at that experiment, has the potential to improve the limits presented here.

Book Top Quark Pair Production Cross Sections and Calibration of the Top Quark Monte Carlo Mass

Download or read book Top Quark Pair Production Cross Sections and Calibration of the Top Quark Monte Carlo Mass written by Jan Kieseler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the top-quark Monte-Carlo mass. It also provides the top-quark mass-independent and most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the top-quark mass obtain the top-quark mass parameter (Monte-Carlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a long-standing open problem with far-reaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurements to date are performed. The Monte-Carlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the top-quark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the top-quark production cross-sections are obtained – for the first time – without residual dependence on the top-quark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the top-quark running- and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained top-quark Monte-Carlo mass.

Book Quark Model and High Energy Collisions

Download or read book Quark Model and High Energy Collisions written by Vladimir Vladislavovich Anisovich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an updated version of the book published in 1985. QCD-motivated, it gives a detailed description of hadron structure and soft interactions in the additive quark model, where hadrons are regarded as composite systems of dressed quarks. In the past decade it has become clear that nonperturbative QCD, responsible for soft hadronic processes, may differ rather drastically from perturbative QCD. The understanding of nonperturbative QCD requires a detailed investigation of the experiments and the theoretical approaches. Bearing this in mind, the book has been rewritten paying special attention to the interplay of soft hadronic collisions and the quark model. It is at the crossroads of these domains that peculiar features of strong QCD reveal themselves. The book discusses constituent quarks, diquarks, the massive effective gluons and the problem of scalar isoscalar mesons. The quark-gluonium classification of meson states is also given. Experimentally observed properties of hadrons are presented together with the corresponding theoretical interpretation in the framework of the composite hadron structure. The text includes a large theoretical part, which shows how to treat composite systems (including relativistic ones) with a technique based on spectral integration. This technique provides the possibility of handling hadrons as weakly bound systems of quarks and, at the same time, takes into account confinement. Attention is focused on the composite structure revealing itself in high energy hadron collisions. Fields of applicability of the additive quark model are discussed, as is colour screening in hadronic collisions at high and superhigh energies. Along with a detailed presentation of hadronOCohadron collisions, a description of hadronOConucleus collisions is given. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction (1,047 KB). Contents: High Energy Hadron Interactions; Composite Systems; High Energy Interactions of Composite Systems; Hadron Zoology and Static Features of Hadrons; Binary Processes in the Quark Model; Multiparticle Production in the Quark Model: Hadron Collisions at Moderately High Energies; HadronOCoNucleus Collisions. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in particle and nuclear physics."

Book Top quark Processes at NLO in Production and Decay

Download or read book Top quark Processes at NLO in Production and Decay written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe the implementation of top production and decay processes in the parton-level Monte Carlo program MCFM. By treating the top quark as being on-shell, we can factorize the amplitudes for top-pair production, s-channel single-top production, and t-channel single-top production into the product of an amplitude for production and an amplitude for decay. In this way we can retain all spin correlations. Both the production and the decay amplitudes are calculated consistently at next-to-leading order in alpha_s. The full dependence on the b-quark mass is also kept. Phenomenological results are presented for various kinematic distributions at the LHC and for the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron.
