Book excerpt: As the Director of Concierge of the Liberty Building in Tribeca, it's my job to take care of the rich and famous, the billionaire suits, their trophy wives, all the VIPs. It's like running a hotel-but for billionaires. When a penthouse opens up, it's like the floor of the Stock Exchange. The highest bidder wins. And this time, the winner is Deacon Hamilton. He's young and gorgeous...but a tool. He hardly says two words to me, won't even look at me when he speaks and treats me like an imbecile. But the longer I pick up his dry cleaning, deliver his groceries, take care of all the details of his life, the more I realize he's not what he seems. He's just brilliant. Extremely brilliant. A noble prize-winning doctor and researcher, Deacon Hamilton is one of the most gifted men on the planet. But he doesn't know how to talk to people, doesn't know how to communicate, doesn't know how to connect with anyone. Except me.
Download or read book To The Single Me From The Married You written by Sheree Hope and published by B&F Ministry, LLC. This book was released on 2024-08-31 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time when something or someone in our life gives us the opportunity to look back at our younger self with a different pair of eyes. A more mature version of ourselves stands in the mirror with the ability to articulate the things we could not explain but believed way back then. I invite you to join me on a profound journey of self-reflection and growth as I explore the intricate relationship between my past and present selves. Me, the married woman who looks back at… me, my single self, examining how my actions and beliefs of my younger years shaped the person I am today. In my case, my someone is my daughter. I was a teen mom who grew up with her, and I made plenty of mistakes and miscommunicated so many of my intentions. Now, happily married during her adult life, I’m able to recognize that there was so much that I did get right. Our relationship, marked by disagreements and periods of silence, ultimately became a testament to the enduring bond between a mother and child. Even still, the change in my relationship status caused some confusion when she began to express that the married version of me had forgotten what it’s like to be single. Oh, on the contrary! I wrote this book to speak about the things that I so deeply believed but could not say when I was single and in survival mode. I didn’t have the words yet and certainly couldn’t express them to her as a child. This is a tribute to my younger self and in honor of my daughter. Through all the complexities of being a teen mom and raising her while navigating the chaotic waters of youth and motherhood, my daughter became a pivotal character in this journey. Her presence and influence provide a mirror through which I can see my younger self with new eyes. It is through her that the I learned to speak my truth and impart the wisdom I held close to my heart as a young single woman. Without delving into the specifics of our most intimate moments, I use my narrative to offer a powerful message about self-acceptance and the continuity of identity. My message is simply that our past and present selves are not disparate entities but parts of a whole, intricately woven together to form the person we are meant to be. Therefore, our relationship status can’t define us or compartmentalize our person. Through my own reflection, I pray that readers are encouraged to view themselves as complete and unbroken, regardless of your past circumstances. I invite you to appreciate every facet of your existence, recognizing that each experience, no matter how challenging, contributes to the wholeness of your being. May this be an inspiring reminder that we are, and always have been, complete in the eyes of God, urging us to embrace our journey and see ourselves as one unified person.

Download or read book They Raised Me Up written by Carolyn Marie Wilkins and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the height of the cocaine-fueled 1980s, Carolyn Wilkins left a disastrous marriage in Seattle and, hoping to make it in the music business, moved with her four-year-old daughter to a gritty working-class town on the edge of Boston. They Raised Me Up is the story of her battle to succeed in the world of jam sessions and jazz clubs—a man’s world where women were seen as either sex objects or doormats. To survive, she had to find a way to pay the bills, overcome a crippling case of stage fright, fend off a series of unsuitable men, and most important, find a reliable babysitter. Alternating with Carolyn’s story are the stories of her ancestors and mentors—five musically gifted women who struggled to realize their dreams at the turn of the twentieth century: Philippa Schuyler, whose efforts to “pass” for white inspired Carolyn to embrace her own black identity despite her “damn near white” appearance and biracial child; Marjory Jackson, the musician and single mother whose dark complexion and flamboyant lifestyle raised eyebrows among her contemporaries in the snobby, color-conscious world of the African American elite; Lilly Pruett, the daughter of an illiterate sharecropper whose stunning beauty might have been her only ticket out of the “Jim Crow” South; Ruth Lipscomb, the country girl who dreamed, against all odds, of becoming a concert pianist and realized her improbable ambition in 1941; Alberta Sweeney, who survived a devastating personal tragedy by relying on the musical talent and spiritual stamina she had acquired growing up in a rough-and-tumble Kansas mining town. They Raised Me Up interweaves memoir with family history to create an entertaining, informative, and engrossing read that will appeal to anyone with an interest in African American or women’s history or to readers simply looking for an intriguing story about music and family.
Download or read book Night Driving written by Addie Zierman and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you know God is real? In the emotionally-charged, fire-filled faith in which Addie Zierman grew up, the answer to this question was simple: Because you’ve FELT him. Now, at age 30, she feels nothing. Just the darkness pressing in. Just the winter cold. Just a buzzing silence where God’s voice used to be. So she loads her two small children into the minivan one February afternoon and heads south in one last-ditch effort to find the Light. In her second memoir, Night Driving, Addie Zierman powerfully explores the gap between our sunny, faith fictions and a God who often seems hidden and silent. Against the backdrop of rushing Interstates, strangers’ hospitality, gas station coffee, and screaming children, Addie stumbles toward a faith that makes room for doubt, disappointment, and darkness…and learns that sometimes you have to run away to find your way home.

Download or read book Gay Like Me written by Richie Jackson and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chosen by Town & Country as one of the most anticipated books of the year | Named "An LGBTQ Book That'll Change the Literary Landscape in 2020" by O: The Oprah Magazine In this poignant and urgent love letter to his son, award-winning Broadway, TV and film producer Richie Jackson reflects on his experiences as a gay man in America and the progress and setbacks of the LGBTQ community over the last 50 years. “My son is kind, responsible, and hardworking. He is ready for college. He is not ready to be a gay man living in America." When Jackson's son born through surrogacy came out to him at age 15, the successful producer, now in his 50s, was compelled to reflect on his experiences and share his wisdom on life for LGBTQ Americans over the past half-century. Gay Like Me is a celebration of gay identity and parenting, and a powerful warning for his son, other gay men and the world. Jackson looks back at his own journey as a gay man coming of age through decades of political and cultural turmoil. Jackson's son lives in a seemingly more liberated America, and Jackson beautifully lays out how far we’ve come since Stonewall -- the increased visibility of gay people in society, the legal right to marry, and the existence of a drug to prevent HIV. But bigotry is on the rise, ignited by a president who has declared war on the gay community and fanned the flames of homophobia. A newly constituted Supreme Court with a conservative tilt is poised to overturn equality laws and set the clock back decades. Being gay is a gift, Jackson writes, but with their gains in jeopardy, the gay community must not be complacent. As Ta-Nehisi Coates awakened us to the continued pervasiveness of racism in America in Between the World and Me, Jackson’s rallying cry in Gay Like Me is an eye-opening indictment to straight-lash in America. This book is an intimate, personal exploration of our uncertain times and most troubling questions and profound concerns about issues as fundamental as dignity, equality, and justice. Gay Like Me is a blueprint for our time that bridges the knowledge gap of what it’s like to be gay in America. This is a cultural manifesto that will stand the test of time. Angry, proud, fierce, tender, it is a powerful letter of love from a father to a son that holds lasting insight for us all.

Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.
