Book excerpt: Our original project goal was to develop a 1.06 micron, 5 watt single frequency, injection-locked laser. Both CW and Q-switched operation were required and we anticipated that Pound-Drever-Hall stabilization could be used for both tasks. A portion of the master oscillator used for injection locking was needed as a low-power frequency reference for LIDAR work. We expected that we might optimistically be able to obtain about 25% slope efficiency using diode pumping which implied a required pump power of at least 20 watts. Earlier we had built some linear oscillators that consisted of a multiple-bounce optical path within a single block of Nd:YAG. Each bounce point required an individual diode pump and coupling optics. We anticipated that this architecture would not be easily scaled to high powers much above the 5 watt level so we decided to commit to an architecture that might utilize the recently available high power (10 to 20 watts) diode arrays. We decided to couple these arrays to one or more active Nd:YAG elements using optical fibers.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the interim period of this bridging contract, we have continued to work on the development of high-power cw diode-laser-array-pumped solid-state lasers. Towards that end, we have built lower power lasers in order to test individual components needed for the high-power laser, specifically we have built a 1 watt ring laser and a 5 watt slab laser. The 1 watt laser was used to study the injection locking process while assembling all the necessary electronics. We have demonstrated that it is possible to injection lock a diode- pumped laser using a single piezo-mounted mirror due to the lower intrinsic laser noise compared to an arc-lamp-pumped system. This allows us to optimize the injection locking servo loop and build a more stable locking system. The 5 watt laser was used as a test bed to find a practical way to mount the slab laser while minimizing the losses that occur at the total internal reflection (TIR) points in the slab. After trying many different means of protecting the TIR surfaces, we found that a new product from DuPont, Teflon AF 1600, has all the properties needed to provide a low loss protective coating. Using this material, the laser had a cavity loss of below 2%, which allowed for efficient operation of the laser in a side-pumped design. This laser produced 5 watts of output power with a slope efficiency near 20%.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past three years we have made substantial progress toward the goal of a fiber coupled, diode laser pumped 1OOW cw Nd:YAG minislab laser. We have diode pumped a 1W ring cavity laser and have operated it in a single frequency. We have diode pumped a testbed minislab Nd:YAG laser using fiber coupled diode laser bars and generated 5W of cw, TEMoo mode output power. We have designed and are implementing a 5OW cw minislab Nd:YAG laser to be pumped by 25 diode laser bars coupled through optical fibers. We plan, in the second phase of this program, to achieve the 1OOW cw output power level in a minislab Nd:YAG laser approach proposed as the goal of this research program In addition, we have demonstrated single frequency control of a high power Nd:YAG laser oscillator by injection locking; have frequency stabilized Nd:YAG oscillators by locking to high finesse Fabry Perot resonators; have absolutely stabilized Nd:YAG to one part in 10 to the -13th power by locking to iodine; have frequency converted Nd:YAG by second harmonic generation to 11.2W of cw TEMoo mode green output; have demonstrated the first cw 2 microns OPO in lithium niobate; and have demonstrated the first cw singly resonant OPO with 2W of output in a single frequency in KTP.

Book excerpt: A solid-state laser use and gain medium that is a solid, rather than a liquid such as dye lasers or a gas such as gas lasers. Semiconductor-based lasers are also in the solid state, but are generally considered separately from solid-state lasers. Generally, the active medium of a solid-state laser consists of a glass or crystalline host material to which is added a dopant such as neodymium, chromium, erbium, or other ions. Many of the common dopants are rare earth elements, because the excited states of such ions are not strongly coupled with thermal vibrations of the crystalline lattice (phonons), and the lasing threshold can be reached at relatively low brightness of pump. There are many hundreds of solid-state media in which laser action has been achieved, but relatively few types are in widespread use. Of these, probably the most common type is neodymium doped YAG. Neodymium-doped glass (Nd:glass) and Ytterbium-doped glasses and ceramics are used in solid-state lasers at extremely high power (terawatt scale), high energy (megajoules) multiple beam systems for inertial confinement fusion. Titanium doped sapphire is also widely used for its broad tunability. This book gathers new research in the field.

Book Frequency Stabilization of Diode Laser Pumped Solid State Lasers

Download or read book Frequency Stabilization of Diode Laser Pumped Solid State Lasers written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the NASA Sunlite program is to fly two diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers on the space shuttle and while doing so to perform a measurement of their frequency stability and temporal coherence. These measurements will be made by combining the outputs of the two lasers on an optical radiation detector and spectrally analyzing the beat note. Diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers have several characteristics that will make them useful in space borne experiments. First, this laser has high electrical efficiency. Second, it is of a technology that enables scaling to higher powers in the future. Third, the laser can be made extremely reliable, which is crucial for many space based applications. Fourth, they are frequency and amplitude stable and have high temporal coherence. Diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers are inherently efficient. Recent results have shown 59 percent slope efficiency for a diode-laser-pumped solid-state laser. As for reliability, the laser proposed should be capable of continuous operation. This is possible because the diode lasers can be remote from the solid state gain medium by coupling through optical fibers. Diode lasers are constructed with optical detectors for monitoring their output power built into their mounting case. A computer can actively monitor the output of each diode laser. If it sees any variation in the output power that might indicate a problem, the computer can turn off that diode laser and turn on a backup diode laser. As for stability requirements, it is now generally believed that any laser can be stabilized if the laser has a frequency actuator capable of tuning the laser frequency as far as it is likely to drift in a measurement time.
