Bioenergy represents a promising replacement for conventional energy, due to reduced environmental impacts and broad applicability. Sustainable energy challenges, however, require innovative manufacturing technologies and practices to mitigate energy and material consumption. This research aims to facilitate sustainable production of bioenergy from forest biomass and to promote deployment of novel processing equipment such as transportable biorefineries. The study integrates knowledge from the renewable energy production and supply chain management disciplines to evaluate economic and environmental targets of bioenergy production with the use of the multi-criteria decision making approach. The presented approach herein includes qualitative and quantitative methods to address the existing challenges and gaps in the bioenergy manufacturing system. The qualitative method employs decision tree analysis to classify the potential biomass harvesting sites, considering biomass quality and availability. The quantitative method proposes mathematical models to optimize the upstream and midstream biomass-tobioenergy supply chain cost, using mixed bio-refinery modes (transportable and fixed) and transportation pathways (traditional and new). The supply chain environmental impacts are assessed by considering the carbon footprint of the harvesting, collection, size reduction, transportation activities, and bio-refinery processing. While transportable bio-refineries are shown to reduce biomass-to-bioenergy supply chain costs, production and deployment of transportable bio-refineries are limited due to operational challenges associated with undeveloped mixed-mode bioenergy supply chains, as well as supply uncertainty. A case study for northwest Oregon, USA is undertaken using actual data to verify the proposed approach.

Book excerpt: To achieve an economically and environmentally sustainable lignocellulosic biomass (LCB)-based biofuel industry sector, the design and location of a sustainable LCB supply chain is important. In this study, a multi-objective optimization model integrated with high-resolution geographical data was developed to examine the optimal switchgrass supply chain for a potential biorefinery in Tennessee, specifically evaluating the potential tradeoffs between the objectives of minimizing plant-gate cost and GHG emissions from the switchgrass supply chain. The key findings of this study are as follows: both plant-gate feedstock cost and GHG emissions were sensitive to the type of land converted into switchgrass production, the type of land use change also affected the density of the feedstock supply region due to the spatial heterogeneity in the availability of different types of land, hence affecting transportation-related cost and GHG emissions, and a tradeoff relationship was discovered between cost and GHG emissions for the switchgrass supply chain, primarily driven by the type of land converted. As a result of land use changes and transportation distances, the imputed cost to reduce one unit of GHG emissions was initially modest; however, the imputed cost increased considerably when the supply chain GHG emissions were further mitigated. This implied that the location of switchgrass production and the resulting changes in crop production should be considered in targeting government incentives to encourage switchgrass-based biofuel production in the state and the southeastern region. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the dry matter loss (DML) decomposition, if considered as a source of GHG emissions, would considerably increase the supply chain GHG emissions. Different harvest and storage technology used in the feedstock supply chain altered the DML rate and corresponding GHG emissions however did not change the tradeoffs between the two objectives significantly. The consideration of GHG emissions from cattle relocation, on the other hand, appears to reduce the GHG emission level of the supply chain to a great extent and change the tradeoff relation between the two objectives.

It provides an overview of the key problems and perspectives toward sustainable production and use of biofuels. It is based on an extensive literature study, taking into account recent major reviews. The focus is on so-called first generation biofuels while considering further lines of development. In the overall context of enhancing resource productivity, options for more efficient and sustainable production and use of biomass are examined. In particular, "modern biomass use" for energetic purposes, such as biomass used for (co-)generation of heat and power and liquid biofuels for transport, are addressed and related to the use of biomass for food and material purposes. Whereas improving the efficiency of biomass production plays a certain role towards enhancing sustainability, progress will ultimately depend on a more efficient use of biotic (and abiotic) resources (incl. for instance an increased fuel economy of car fleets), although a full consideration of all relevant strategies towards this end (e.g changing diets high in animal based foods and reducing food losses) is beyond the scope of this report.

Studies have found that logistics costs in the biomass-to-biofuel supply chain (BBSC) account for 35%-65% of total biofuel production cost. This is mainly due to the low density of biomass that results in high costs associated with biomass transportation, storage, and handling in the biomass-to-biofuel supply chain. Densification provides an as-yet-unexplored opportunity to reduce logistic costs associated with biomass-to-biofuel supply chains. This research advances understanding about biomass-to-biofuel supply chain management through new optimization models. As a first step, the author presents an extensive overview of densification techniques and BBSC optimization models that account for biomass densification. This literature review helps the author to recognize the gaps and future research areas in BBSC studies. These gaps direct the author toward the remaining components of the dissertation. In particular, the literature review highlights two research gaps. First, the review indicates that mobile pelleting holds promise for improved BBSC management, but that there is no mathematical optimization model that addresses this opportunity. Second, currently, there does not exist a model that explicitly accounts for farmers' objectives and their probability to sell biomass to the bioenergy plant in BBSC optimization. To fill the first gap, the author focuses on managing the BBSC considering mobile densification units to account for chances to minimize logistics costs. A mixed integer linear programming model is proposed to manage the BBSC with different types and forms of biomass feedstock and mobile densification units. Sensitivity analysis and scenario analysis are presented to quantify conditions that make mobile densification an attractive choice. The author conducts a case study to demonstrate model applicability and type of analysis that can be drawn from this type of models. The result indicates that mobile pelleting is not an attractive choice under the current economic status. However, modest changes in pelleting cost, satellite storage location fixed cost, and/or travel distances are enough to make mobile pelleting an attractive choice. To fill the second gap, the author introduces a model that explicitly accounts for mobile densification and farmers' probability to supply a bioenergy plant with biomass feedstock. Farmers' probability to provide biomass to the bioenergy plant depends on contract attributes, including expected net return and services provided by the bioenergy plant. The proposed model helps the bioenergy plant to meet biofuel demand while considering farmers' choices that satisfy their own objectives and preferences. The model makes it possible to determine most important factors that influence type of contract offered to each supplier and optimal BBSC design. A case study based on the state of Kansas is conducted to demonstrate how bioenergy plant can benefit from this type of model.
