Book Singapore Inc Versus the Private Sector

Download or read book Singapore Inc Versus the Private Sector written by Carlos D. Ramírez and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government-linked companies (GLCs) have a significant presence in Singapore's corporate sector. Unlike parastatals in many other countries, these companies are run on a competitive, commercial basis, ostensibly without government privileges. Based on data from publicly listed GLCs and non-GLCs, we indeed find no evidence that GLCs have easier access to credit. However, we do find that being a GLC is rewarded in financial markets with a positive premium, over and above what can be explained by the usual determinants of Tobin's q.

Book Does State Capitalism Work in Singapore

Download or read book Does State Capitalism Work in Singapore written by Isabel Joo Lay Sim and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is divided literature on the utility of government-owned and governmentrun enterprises. This study adds to this literature by examining Singapore's stateowned companies called Government Linked Companies ("GLCs"). It addresses three questions: (i) How does Temasek, Singapore's state holding company own and govern listed GLCs? (ii) Do financial and operating performances of Singapore's GLCs improve after privatisation? (iii) Is there a link between the GLCs' performance and their corporate governance? Using data relating to the period 1980 to 2008, the study examines the role of GLCs within Singapore's economic policies; how they are privatised; their corporate background and management; the role of Temasek; and GLCs' performance and corporate governance practices. In providing insights into the role of Singapore's GLCs, this thesis brings into question much of the literature that is adverse to government ownership. Singapore's GLCs are well managed, efficient and profitable. They have played a vital economic role in transforming Singapore from a developing third world country to a developed first world country. The study suggests that Temasek applies stringent governance and operating guidelines to GLCs. The financial and operating performance of GLCs does not improve post-privatisation. The study further suggests that GLCs' performance is not related to several attributes of governance including board size, duality of office, the political connectedness of board members and board interlocks.

Book Government Linked Companies and Sustainable Equitable Development

Download or read book Government Linked Companies and Sustainable Equitable Development written by Terence Gomez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over how far governments should intervene in economies in order to promote economic growth, a debate which from the 1980s seemed settled in favour of the neo-liberal, non-interventionist consensus, has taken on new vigour since the financial crisis of 2008 and after. Some countries, most of them in industrialised Asia, have survived the crisis, and secured equitable economic growth, by adopting a developmental state model, whereby governments have intervened in their economies, often through explicit support for individual companies. This book explores debates about government intervention, assesses interventionist policies, including industrial and innovation policies, and examines in particular the key institutions which play a crucial role in implementing government policies and in building the bridge between the state and the private sector. The countries covered include China, India, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan, together with representative countries from Europe and Latin America.

Book State owned Enterprises In A Mixed Economy

Download or read book State owned Enterprises In A Mixed Economy written by Mehdi Haririan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive feature of economic trends of the past three decades has been the increase in microeconomic intervention by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the market economies of rich industrial and poor developing nations. The majority of SOEs were established as policy instruments of choice in response to a variety of socioeconomic needs and socio-political problems. As persuasively demonstrated in this book, microeconomic efficiency criteria alone, stemming from the theory of a perfectly competitive economy, are badly designed criteria for public firms. The historical part of the book, in particular, discusses quite compellingly a number of causes other than market failures for the existence of state-owned enterprises. This discussion develops complex answers regarding causes for the existence of public firms.
