Book The Globe s Emigrating Children

Download or read book The Globe s Emigrating Children written by Kathleen A. Stark and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Globe's Emigrating Children describes one teacher's experiences teaching twenty-four immigrant students during their first year in the United States. From diverse places including Vietnam, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Mexico, El Salvador, and Haiti, these children brought their many languages and cultures to a first grade sheltered English classroom in a large urban school district. Kathleen A. Stark's thoughts and conversations with her students and her struggles to address each of the children's emotional and learning needs - while guiding them to recognize and question the assumptions of the world around them - provide a much-needed, intimate look into the lives and education of immigrant children. Stark's beautifully written reflections about the teacher's role and the role of education in general are supremely original, honest, and thought-provoking. This book should be read by any teacher involved in such areas as immigration, early childhood theory, literacy, foreign language education, and critical pedagogy. It is also suited to pre-service college courses devoted to these topics.

Book excerpt: Any Twenty By: Gary L Brown Six months ago, Nadia Wolf, as the Creative Director of American Reality Networks, walked into her boss’ office to be fired. Now she was the final, featured speaker in the packed banquet hall at the celebration of the award-winning reality show "Any Twenty" that has broken all viewership records. She would let the audience know that the real credit for the show goes to a wonderful, elderly Virginia horse trainer, affectionately known by everyone as Nana Lisa. “Nadia, pick any twenty real, regular, every day working people --- like those people in my back yard right now, a teacher, a truck driver, a cashier, a doctor, a housewife, a farmer, a retired person --- honey, any twenty you want... any race, religion, color, or creed you want...give 'em a problem, let 'em argue about it, and then tell 'em, okay guys we'll pay you to fix it! Are they smarter than the U.S. Congress? YEP! It won't matter what the problem is, unemployment, climate change, even abortion...no matter how big the problem they'll find a way to fix it. They live in the real world...they always fix things...they have to.” Checking her phone after the speech, “Oh, Dear God...NO!!! It was a text message from David: “Emergency – barn fire, Nana Lisa badly burned, dogs missing, maybe stolen. Taking red eye flight back to Virginia. Sorry, love, I missed your speech. Will call you in morning. So sorry, Nadia. Twenty people may be able to fix things, but it only takes one to destroy them.”

Book A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers

Download or read book A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers written by Will Friedwald and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will Friedwald’s illuminating, opinionated essays—provocative, funny, and personal—on the lives and careers of more than three hundred singers anatomize the work of the most important jazz and popular performers of the twentieth century. From giants like Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and Judy Garland to lesser-known artists like Jeri Southern and Joe Mooney, they have created a body of work that continues to please and inspire. Here is the most extensive biographical and critical survey of these singers ever written, as well as an essential guide to the Great American Songbook and those who shaped the way it has been sung. The music crosses from jazz to pop and back again, from the songs of Irving Berlin and W. C. Handy through Stephen Sondheim and beyond, bringing together straightforward jazz and pop singers (Billie Holiday, Perry Como); hybrid artists who moved among genres and combined them (Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé); the leading men and women of Broadway and Hollywood (Ethel Merman, Al Jolson); yesterday’s vaudeville and radio stars (Sophie Tucker, Eddie Cantor); and today’s cabaret artists and hit-makers (Diana Krall, Michael Bublé). Friedwald has also written extended pieces on the most representative artists of five significant genres that lie outside the songbook: Bessie Smith (blues), Mahalia Jackson (gospel), Hank Williams (country and western), Elvis Presley (rock ’n’ roll), and Bob Dylan (folk-rock). Friedwald reconsiders the personal stories and professional successes and failures of all these artists, their songs, and their performances, appraising both the singers and their music by balancing his opinions with those of fellow musicians, listeners, and critics. This magisterial reference book—ten years in the making—will delight and inform anyone with a passion for the iconic music of America, which continues to resonate throughout our popular culture.
