Book Cut Me Loose

Download or read book Cut Me Loose written by Leah Vincent and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of Prozac Nation and Girl, Interrupted, an electrifying memoir about a young woman's promiscuous and self-destructive spiral after being cast out of her ultra-Orthodox Jewish family Leah Vincent was born into the Yeshivish community, a fundamentalist sect of ultra-Orthodox Judaism. As the daughter of an influential rabbi, Leah and her ten siblings were raised to worship two things: God and the men who ruled their world. But the tradition-bound future Leah envisioned for herself was cut short when, at sixteen, she was caught exchanging letters with a male friend, a violation of religious law that forbids contact between members of the opposite sex. Leah's parents were unforgiving. Afraid, in part, that her behavior would affect the marriage prospects of their other children, they put her on a plane and cut off ties. Cast out in New York City, without a father or husband tethering her to the Orthodox community, Leah was unprepared to navigate the freedoms of secular life. She spent the next few years using her sexuality as a way of attracting the male approval she had been conditioned to seek out as a child, while becoming increasingly unfaithful to the religious dogma of her past. Fast-paced, mesmerizing, and brutally honest, Cut Me Loose tells the story of one woman's harrowing struggle to define herself as an individual. Through Leah's eyes, we confront not only the oppressive world of religious fundamentalism, but also the broader issues that face even the most secular young women as they grapple with sexuality and identity.

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book The Origin of Sin written by David Konstan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where did the idea of sin arise from? In this meticulously argued book, David Konstan takes a close look at classical Greek and Roman texts, as well as the Bible and early Judaic and Christian writings, and argues that the fundamental idea of "sin" arose in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, although this original meaning was obscured in later Jewish and Christian interpretations. Through close philological examination of the words for "sin," in particular the Hebrew hata' and the Greek hamartia, he traces their uses over the centuries in four chapters, and concludes that the common modern definition of sin as a violation of divine law indeed has antecedents in classical Greco-Roman conceptions, but acquired a wholly different sense in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament.

Download or read book Spiritual Warfare written by Ellis Smiley and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you struggled with living the Christian life victoriously? Author Ellis Smiley discusses the challenges we face when we make the commitment to follow the Lord. Our sinful mind and character will follow our selfish desires unless we are changed from within by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are in a conflict for the salvation of our very souls, and we find that the worst enemy is our self. The struggle of giving in and letting God take control of our selfish, willful mind is the essence of Spiritual Warfare. “The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness.” (White, Steps to Christ, p. 43) Smiley reminds us of many key truths that we should be aware of to win the war. Along with the thoughtful consent we must give God to work out His will in our lives, we must keep our thoughts focused on pure and righteous content. We must live our lives as if in God’s actual presence. Giving of ourselves to the service of others is also an important factor in living the selfless life of which God asks us. These ideas and more are explored to deepen our understanding of the battles we face in the life we choose to live, with the Lord’s help, until He returns as our victorious Leader to take us home once and for all.
