Book Tourism and Gender

Download or read book Tourism and Gender written by Annette Pritchard and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While contemporary popular discourses dismiss gender and feminism as passé, patriarchy and sexism continue to limit human possibilities around the globe. The tourism industry can be a force for empowerment but it can also shore up exploitative gendered practices. At the same time, tourism enquiry itself continues to be dominated by western, masculinist approaches. This collection of studies seeks to advance feminist and gender tourism studies with its focus on embodiment. Broad themes include the construction of narratives, how discourses of desire, sensuality and sexuality pervade the tourism experience, the use of the body to represent femininity, masculinity and sensuality, and finally how travel and tourism allow for empowerment, resistance and carnivalesque opportunities.

She likes to keep little pieces of the men she meets in these scenarios. They are her trophies. It seems only fair... given the pieces of herself that she gives away with such abandon.

Then my family began to figure out that I had a problem. God used my family to get my attention. God wanted me to change. Once I admitted to myself that I had a gambling problem, God sent me to the desert of Las Vegas to beat it. I went on a four-day trip with my mom and tried to not bet once. I met Jesus over and over during my journey. During my pilgrimage, I had extraordinary experiences and interesting interactions. In the end, God helped me beat gambling on its own turf, Sin City. I grew so much because of this journey. God wanted me to share it with you.

Book The American Dream

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lawrence R. Samuel
  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 2012-08-27
  • ISBN : 0815610076
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book The American Dream written by Lawrence R. Samuel and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no better way to understand America than by understanding the cultural history of the American Dream. Rather than just a powerful philosophy or ideology, the Dream is thoroughly woven into the fabric of everyday life, playing a vital role in who we are, what we do, and why we do it. No other idea or mythology has as much influence on our individual and collective lives. Tracing the history of the phrase in popular culture, Samuel gives readers a field guide to the evolution of our national identity over the last eighty years. Samuel tells the story chronologically, revealing that there have been six major eras of the mythology since the phrase was coined in 1931. Relying mainly on period magazines and newspapers as his primary source material, the author demonstrates that journalists serving on the front lines of the scene represent our most valuable resource to recover unfiltered stories of the Dream. The problem, Samuel reveals, is that it does not exist; the Dream is just that, a product of our imagination. That it is not real ultimately turns out to be the most significant finding and what makes the story most compelling.

Book Negative Neighbourhood Reputation and Place Attachment

Download or read book Negative Neighbourhood Reputation and Place Attachment written by Paul Kirkness and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of territorial stigma, as developed in large part by the urban sociologist Loïc Wacquant, contends that certain groups of people are devalued, discredited and tainted by the reputation of the place where they reside. This book argues that this theory is more relevant and comprehensive than others that have been used to frame and understand ostracised neighbourhoods and their populations (for example segregation and the racialisation of place) and allows for an inclusive interpretation of the many spatial facets of marginalisation processes. Advancing conceptual understanding of how territorial stigmatisation and its components unfold materially as well as symbolically, this book presents a wide range of case studies from the Global South and Global North, including an examination of recent policy measures that have been applied to deal with the consequences of territorial stigmatisation. It introduces readers to territorial stigmatisation’s strategic deployment but also illustrates, in a number of regional contexts, the attachments that residents at times develop for the stigmatised places in which they live and the potential counter-forces that are developed against territorial stigmatisation by a variety of different groups.
