Book Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Charged Current Inclusive Cross Sections with the MINERvA Detector

This book was released on 2015 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos are a nearly massless, neutral particle in the Standard Model that only interact via the weak interaction. Experimental confirmation of neutrino oscillations, in which a neutrino created as a particular type (electron, muon or tau) can be observed as a different type after propagating some distance, earned the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Neutrino oscillation experiments rely on accurate measurements of neutrino interactions with matter, such as that presented here. Neutrinos also provide a unique probe of the nucleus, complementary to electron scattering experiments. This thesis presents a measurement of the charged-current inclusive cross section for muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the energy range 2 to 50 GeV with the MINERvA detector. MINERvA is a neutrino scattering experiment in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab, near Chicago. A cross section measures the probability of an interaction occurring, measured here as a function of neutrino energy. To extract a cross section from data, the observed rate of interactions is corrected for detector efficiency and divided by the number of scattering nucleons in the target and the flux of neutrinos in the beam. The neutrino flux is determined with the low-$\nu$ method, which relies on the principle that the cross section for interactions with very low recoil energy is nearly constant as a function of neutrino energy. The measured cross section is compared with world data.

Book NuTeV Cross section and Structure Function Measurements

Download or read book NuTeV Cross section and Structure Function Measurements written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NuTeV experiment has obtained a unique high statistics sample of neutrino and antineutrino interactions using its high-energy sign-selected beam. Charged-current[nu] and[bar[nu]] differential cross sections are extracted. Neutrino-Iron structure functions, F[sub 2](x, Q[sup 2]) and xF[sub 3](x, Q[sup 2]), are determined by fitting the y-dependence of the differential cross sections. NuTeV has precise understanding of its hadron and muon energy scales, which improves the systematic precision of this measurement.

Book First Measurement of the Muon Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section

Download or read book First Measurement of the Muon Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section written by Joseph Grange and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a major step forward in experimentally understanding the behavior of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos. Apart from providing the world’s first measurement of these interactions in a mostly unexplored energy region, the data presented advances the neutrino community’s preparedness to search for an asymmetry between matter and anti-matter that may very well provide the physical mechanism for the existence of our universe. The details of these measurements are preceded by brief summaries of the history of the neutrino, the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations, and a description of their interactions. Also provided are details of the experimental setup for the measurements and the muon antineutrino cross-section measurement which motivates the need for dedicated in situ background constraints. The world’s first measurement of the neutrino component of an antineutrino beam using a non-magnetized detector, as well as other crucial background constraints, are also presented in the book. By exploiting correlated systematic uncertainties, combined measurements of the muon neutrino and antineutrino cross sections described in the book maximize the precision of the extracted information from both results.

Book Quark and Lepton Mass Effects and the Observational Constraints on the High Energy Neutrino Cross Sections

Download or read book Quark and Lepton Mass Effects and the Observational Constraints on the High Energy Neutrino Cross Sections written by Yu Seon Jeong and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross sections of neutrino-nucleon scattering at high energies are evaluated with quark masses at next-to-leading order in strong interaction corrections. We compare the results with two kinds of schemes for treating the heavy quarks, the fixed flavor number scheme and the variable flavor number scheme for muon neutrino-nucleon interaction, and discuss which scheme is more relevant. The optimized parton distribution functions (PDF) for the flavor number schemes are also evaluated. The tau mass, much larger than the muon mass, suppresses the cross sections at low energies. We calculate the tau neutrino and antineutrino cross sections including the lepton mass corrections with low Q-extrapolated structure functions. Uncertainties due to the factorization scale, PDF choice, and the momentum transfer cutoff for the structure functions are also discussed with total theoretical errors. At ultra high energies (UHE), the same cross sections can be used for all flavors. We applied our evaluated cross sections to estimate the UHE neutrino event rates from lunar detection. The effective lunar aperture depends on the frequency and the minimum detectable electric field. We evaluate the effective aperture for a range of inputs. The event rates for both neutrino and cosmic rays are calculated in the standard model and compared with the enhanced neutrino-nucleon cross section for mini-black hole production. Lunar detection of UHE neutrino fluxes in the standard model will be challenging because low event rates are predicted.

Book Measurement of the Antineutrino Double Differential Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering Cross Section at MINERvA

Download or read book Measurement of the Antineutrino Double Differential Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering Cross Section at MINERvA written by Cheryl E. Patrick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis represents the first double differential measurement of quasi-elastic anti-neutrino scattering in the few GeV range--a region of substantial theoretical and experimental interest as it is the kinematic region where studies of charge-parity (CP) violation in the neutrino sector most require precise understanding of the differences between anti-neutrino and neutrino scatter. This dissertation also presents total antineutrino-scintillator quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of energy, which is then compared to measurements from previous experiments. Next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments, such as DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande, hope to measure CP violation in the lepton sector. In order to do this, they must dramatically reduce their current levels of uncertainty, particularly those due to neutrino-nucleus interaction models. As CP violation is a measure of the difference between the oscillation properties of neutrinos and antineutrinos, data about how the less-studied antineutrinos interact is especially valuable. The measurement described herewith determines the nuclear and instrumental effects that must be understood to undertake precision neutrino physics. As well as being useful to help reduce oscillation experiments' uncertainty, this data can also be used to study the prevalence of various correlation and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus. In addition to being a substantial scientific advance, this thesis also serves as an outstanding introduction to the field of experimental neutrino physics for future students.

Book Measurement of the Neutrino Neutral Current Elastic Differential Cross Section

Download or read book Measurement of the Neutrino Neutral Current Elastic Differential Cross Section written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on mineral oil (CH2) as a function of four-momentum transferred squared, Q2. It is obtained by measuring the kinematics of recoiling nucleons with kinetic energy greater than 50 MeV which are readily detected in MiniBooNE. This differential cross-section distribution is fit with fixed nucleon form factors apart from an axial mass, M{sub A}, that provides a best fit for M{sub A} = 1.39 ± 0.11 GeV. Using the data from the charged-current neutrino interaction sample, a ratio of neutral-current to charged-current quasi-elastic cross sections as a function of Q2 has been measured. Additionally, single protons with kinetic energies above 350 MeV can be distinguished from neutrons and multiple nucleon events. Using this marker, the strange quark contribution to the neutral-current axial vector form factor at Q2 = 0, [Delta]s, is found to be [Delta]s = 0.08± 0.26.

Book Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering in MINER nu A

Download or read book Anti Neutrino Charged Current Quasi Elastic Scattering in MINER nu A written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of neutrino oscillation is becoming increasingly understood with results from accelerator-based and reactor-based experiments, but unanswered questions remain. The proper ordering of the neutrino mass eigenstates that compose the neutrino avor eigenstates is not completely known. We have yet to detect CP violation in neutrino mixing, which if present could help explain the asymmetry between matter and anti-matter in the universe. We also have not resolved whether sterile neutrinos, which do not interact in any Standard Model interaction, exist. Accelerator-based experiments appear to be the most promising candidates for resolving these questions; however, the ability of present and future experiments to provide answers is likely to be limited by systematic errors. A significant source of this systematic error comes from limitations in our knowledge of neutrino-nucleus interactions. Errors on cross-sections for such interactions are large, existing data is sometimes contradictory, and knowledge of nuclear effects is incomplete. One type of neutrino interaction of particular interest is charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering, which yields a final state consisting of a charged lepton and nucleon. This process, which is the dominant interaction near energies of 1 GeV, is of great utility to neutrino oscillation experiments since the incoming neutrino energy and the square of the momentum transferred to the final state nucleon, Q2, can be reconstructed using the final state lepton kinematics. To address the uncertainty in our knowledge of neutrino interactions, many experiments have begun making dedicated measurements. In particular, the MINER A experiment is studying neutrino-nucleus interactions in the few GeV region. MINERvA is a fine-grained, high precision, high statistics neutrino scattering experiment that will greatly improve our understanding of neutrino cross-sections and nuclear effects that affect the final state particles in neutrino interactions. We present the first cross-section measurement for MINER A, the differential cross-section d[sigma]/dQ2 for muon anti-neutrino CCQE scattering on polystyrene scintillator (CH) as well as comparisons to several final state models.

Book Measuring Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections with a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber

Download or read book Measuring Muon Neutrino Charged Current Differential Cross Sections with a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 80 years after its proposed existence, the neutrino remains largely mysterious and elusive. Precision measurements of the neutrino's properties are just now beginning to take place. Such measurements are required in order to determine the mass of the neutrino, how many neutrinos there are, if neutrinos are different than anti-neutrinos, and more. Muon-neutrino charged-current differential cross sections on an argon target in terms of the outgoing muon momentum and angle are presented. The measurements have been taken with the ArgoNeuT Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) experiment. ArgoNeuT is the first LArTPC to ever take data in a low energy neutrino beam, having collected thousands of neutrino and anti-neutrino events in the NuMI beamline at Fermilab. The results are relevant for long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments searching for non-zero $\theta_{13}$, CP-violation in the lepton sector, and the sign of the neutrino mass hierarchy, among other things. Furthermore, the differential cross sections are important for understanding the nature of the neutrino-nucleus interaction in general. These measurements represent a significant step forward for LArTPC technology as they are among the first neutrino physics results with such a device.

Book The Spin Structure of the Nucleon

Download or read book The Spin Structure of the Nucleon written by Bernard Frois and published by World Scientific Publishing Company Incorporated. This book was released on 1997 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early beginnings at SLAC in the 1970's, the study of nucleon spin structure using polarized lepton beams and polarized nucleon targets has become increasingly important in nuclear and particle physics, with current experiments at several of the world's high energy laboratories (CERN, DESY and SLAC) and with enormous related theoretical studies. The understanding of the fascinating but complicated problem of nucleon spin structure has progressed substantially, but fundamental questions remain and it can be confidently predicted that future activity will be high. The Erice Course on The Spin Structure of the Nucleon covered both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, and this volume includes the lectures given at the School. In many cases the lecture material has been extended and updated by the authors. In addition, several recent publications on experimental work have been added in an appendix.
