Book Fixed base Simulator Study of an Externally Blown Flap STOL Transport Airplane During Approach and Landing

Download or read book Fixed base Simulator Study of an Externally Blown Flap STOL Transport Airplane During Approach and Landing written by William D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base simulator study was conducted to determine the flight characteristics of a representative STOL transport having a high wing and equipped with an external-flow jet flap in combination with four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines during the approach and landing. Real-time digital simulation techniques were used. The computer was programed with equations of motion for six degrees of freedom and the aerodynamic inputs were based on measured wind-tunnel data. A visual display of a STOL airport was provided for simulation of the flare and touchdown characteristics. The primary piloting task was an instrument approach to a breakout at a 200-ft ceiling with a visual landing.

Book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane

Download or read book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane written by G. Kimball Miller and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base visual simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the use of decoupled controls as a means for reducing pilot workload during approach and landing of an externally blown jet-flap short take-off and landing (STOL) transport. All six rigid-body degrees of freedom were employed with the aerodynamic characteristics based on wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was to use a flight director to capture and maintain a two-segment glide slope, with a closed-circuit television display of a STOL airport used during simulations of the flare and landing. The decoupled longitudinal controls used constant prefilter and feedback gains to provide steady-state decoupling of flight-path angle, pitch angle, and forward velocity. The pilots were enthusiastic about the decoupled longitudinal controls but believed the decoupled concept offered no significant advantage over conventional controls in the lateral mode.

Book Simulator Study of the Instrument Landing Approach of a Heavy Subsonic Jet Transport with an External flow Jet flap System Used for Additional Lift

Download or read book Simulator Study of the Instrument Landing Approach of a Heavy Subsonic Jet Transport with an External flow Jet flap System Used for Additional Lift written by William D. Grantham and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results indicated that no unusual piloting techniques were required to fly the landing approach on the simulated external-flow jet-flap airplane. However, a lateral-directional augmentation system was required and an autospeed control system was very beneficial. With the stability augmentation and autospeed control systems incorporated the average pilot rating assigned to the flying qualities of the simulated jet-flap configuration was 3 to 39. In addition, the results indicated that the use of spoilers or thrust modulation for direct lift control (DLC), in combination with autospeed control, was an effective system for tracking the glide slope, and both DLC systems were preferred over use of the elevator.

Book Simulator Evaluation of the Low speed Flying Qualities of an Experimental STOL Configuration with an Externally Blown Flap Wing Or an Augmentor Wing

Download or read book Simulator Evaluation of the Low speed Flying Qualities of an Experimental STOL Configuration with an Externally Blown Flap Wing Or an Augmentor Wing written by Bruce G. Powers and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-speed flying qualities of an experimental STOL configuration were evaluated by using a fixed-base six-degree-of-freedom simulation. The configuration had either an externally blown flap (EBF) wing or an augmentor wing (AW). The AW configuration was investigated with two tails, one sized for the AW configuration and a larger one sized for the EBF configuration. The emphasis of the study was on the 70-knot approach task. The stability and control characteristics were compared with existing criteria. Several control systems were investigated for the normal four-engine condition and for the engine-out transient condition. Minimum control and stall speeds were determined for both the three- and four-engine operation.
